Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And the pitcher throws a curveball! The batter misses - strike one!" the announcer yells. What sports game are you watching?

Answer: Baseball

2. Every four years athletes from around 70 nations worldwide including England, Australia, and Canada participate in the Commonwealth Games. Why does the U.S.A. not compete in the games?

3. SOUTH AMERICA - NATIONAL SPORT - Colombia's national sport is called "Tejo". What does the sport involve? (I think there's a reason it isn't played elsewhere!)

Answer: Gunpowder, targets and loud explosions

The game "Tejo" (also known as 'Turmequé') involves players throwing heavy metal disks across a room, which is approx. 20m long (65ft). The players are aiming to hit small triangular paper pouches filled with gunpowder which have been stuck into clay inside a "bocin" (metal ring).

The game is usually played in bars, and a big part of the culture is to drink quite copiously while playing the game. If you hit one of the targets, a loud bang ensues, which elicits cheers from your team (and points for your team if you're actually not so drunk that you can keep score).

The game has been around for 450-odd years, having been played originally by the indigenous 'Muisca' people of South America.

6. FIGURE SKATING - The Bosphorus Cup is contested annually at an international figure skating competition held in what city?

Answer: Istanbul, Turkey

The Bosphorus Cup was formerly called the Istanbul Cup, disclosing its location in Istanbul, Turkey. The competition is normally held in December. Medals are awarded in men's singles, women's singles, and ice dancing. This competition ought not be confused with another Bosphorus Cup which is an international sailboat race.

8. When it was originally marketed in the 1960s, what piece of sporting equipment was called the Snurfer?

Answer: Snowboard

Although early versions of the snowboard have undoubtedly existed much longer, the first to be sold commercially went by the name "Snurfer" (a blending of "snow" and "surfer"). Sherman Poppen of Michigan created the Snurfer for his daughter by binding two skis together.

It was produced from 1965 until the mid-1970s, but snowboarding didn't catch on for years, after the design was refined by other winter sportsmen. Snowboarding made its Olympic debut at the Winter Games of 1998, in Nagano.

10. BASEBALL -- What Mexican pitching phenom overtook the baseball world in 1981 by winning the Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young in his first season, a feat never accomplished before?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

All are Mexican pitchers, but none had the career that Valenzuela did. 1981 was a strike-hampered season, played in two parts, but Valenzuela didn't lose his mojo when the season started up again. No pitcher had ever won a Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in their first season until Fernando Valenzuela.
