Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1906 is officially noted as the first year of football at the University of Florida (known as FAC or Florida Agricultural College at the time), but in which year was the first University of Florida (FAC) football team actually organized?

Answer: 1899

The first team was organized in 1899 and coached by Lt. N.H. Cox.
2. In 1996, the Gators won their first National Championship while losing only one game to Florida State University. This was a game that featured what many consider to be some of the most controversial officiating in the modern era. Danny Wuerfel and the Gators took their revenge in the Sugar Bowl by beating FSU by what score?

Answer: 52-20

Bobby Bowden, when he learned he would be facing a rematch was quoted as saying, "Man, I don't know how we got past those guys the first time". 41-14 was Ohio State in 2006, and 24-14 was Oklahoma in 2008.
3. Florida vs Florida State is certainly one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports, but when did it begin?

Answer: 1902

Florida State University was a women's school for a short period of time, but before that legislature was put into place. The 2 schools played regularly and it was a true rivalry even then. Note: Florida won that first game 6-0, and the first game after FSU returned to football was in 1958 which Florida won 21-7.
4. The Gators were not always known as the Gators. In fact, when the team was first organized, they had no official nickname or mascot at all. They were occasionally referred to as the "Cadets", and for a time "PeeWee's Boys" after coach J.A. (PeeWee) Forsythe 1906-1908. How did the Gator become the nickname?

Answer: A local store owner wanted to print and sell banners and needed something to put on them

In 1908, Phillip Miller, a local store owner (Lake City, the original location of the University of Florida), went to visit his son Austin in Virginia and asked him what he should put on the banners (pennants). Austin immediately associated Florida with the alligator (although they had no idea what one looked like). They found a picture, and the rest is history.
5. At every Florida football game the Gator faithful sings, "We are the boys". When do they do this?

Answer: At the end of the third quarter

The crowd in "The Swamp" locks arms, shoulder to shoulder, and sways together while the band plays. It's a beautiful tradition that really ticks off fans of the visiting victims.
6. Which of these players was not a member of the 1996 National Championship team?

Answer: Chris Doering

Chris Doering, a Gainesville native who attended Gator football summer youth programs throughout his childhood, and was offered scholarships to several prestigious universities, chose to walk on at Florida. With his excellent play and determination, he earned not only a full scholarship in his second year, but went on to set records for pass receptions in 1995.

He was the MVP for the Gators in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl, and graduated that same year with 3 SEC championship rings.
7. George Edmondson Jr, better known as "Mr. Two Bits", attended and began his "2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar cheer" at a game. In 1949, featuring his own alma mater because his friends, and the majority of the crowd wasn't getting behind their home team. He became an icon of Gator football over the next 6 decades. Which school was his alma matter?

Answer: Citadel

He was granted an honorary alumnus by the University of Florida and was later retired. For those of us who were fortunate enough to share in his cheer, he will always be in the swamp on game day.
8. In 1913, the Gators beat Florida Southern by a margin of what score?

Answer: 144-0

It really happened, and it was played under high school rules, meaning 12-minute quarters instead of 15. The following week however, they lost to Auburn 55-0. One Gator football player, Rex Farrior was quoted as saying "after that 144-0 game, I thought college football was a piece of cake, Auburn instructed me otherwise".
9. The period between 1946-1949, in which the Gators under coach Ray "Bear" Wolf had a combined record of 13-23-2, including a 13-game losing streak, is known as what?

Answer: The golden era

It is one of the most talked about times amongst fans of the earlier years. Not just because we were so bad, but because coach Bear Wolf was so beloved in spite of the record. There was even an organized protest (before that kind of thing became acceptable) in an attempt to keep him from being fired.
10. In 1966, Steve Spurrier (quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner) kicked a field goal of 40 yards with 2:12 remaining to beat which team 30-27?

Answer: Auburn

Florida finished the season 7-3, but the field goal kick by Spurrier, who was not the regular kicker, received enough publicity to put him in the national spotlight and draw attention to his many accolades throughout the season. With that he became the first Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida.
