Another new introduction at Tokyo 2020, sport or competition climbing returned at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The governing body advocated for three separate competitions, however there were just the two at Paris. These were speed climbing and a boulder-and-lead combined event. There was just the one combined event at Tokyo. There were 66 competitors from 22 countries and Poland topped the medal table.
Surfing as a competitive sport was new at Tokyo 2020. The 2024 competition took place in Tahiti, French Polynesia with 48 surfers from 21 countries qualifying for the events, split evenly between men and women. France topped the medal table. There are two sports covered by the term 'handball'. Field handball is a soccer-like outdoor sport that was played at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but then dropped. The indoor version first made an appearance at the 1972 Munich Olympics, with a women's competition appearing at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. In 2024 Denmark won the men's competition in a clean sweep with Norway winning the women's. One Danish player scored 183 goals during the competition.
Mountain biking was one of the five cycling disciplines at Paris. It had its own venue, the artificial hill Colline d'Élancourt, and a competition for each gender with 36 competitors in each. The competitions took the form of a mass-start and eight laps of the 4.4 km (2.7 mi) course. Riders from Great Britain and France won the male and female competitions respectively.
Fencing has been in the Olympics since the start of the modern version in 1896. There were 12 different competitions between the two genders. With a maximum of 18 fencers per country, the fencing quota places was capped at 106 for each gender and a total of 212 places. There were three types of weapon (épée, foil and sabre) and both team and individual competitions. Japan came top of the medal table.
Golf was first played at an Olympics in 1900 and returned at the 2016 Olympics in Rio after an absence of over 100 years. The format in Paris was for two competitions based on gender with 60 competitors in each, playing over 72 holes. The venue was Le Golf National at Guyancourt, a regular venue for the Open de France. Competitors from 38 countries participated with the winners coming from the US (men) and New Zealand (women).
In the field of martial arts, taekwondo first put in an appearance as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. It became a medal-winning competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With four weight categories per gender, there were eight competitions with South Korea topping the medal table.
A relatively new Olympic sport, Rugby Sevens first appeared at the 2016 Olympics. Full 15-a-side matches were played at the Olympics between 1900 and 1924. Twenty-four teams, split between the genders, competed with France and New Zealand winning the men's and women's competitions respectively.
The wrong answers had all appeared in previous Summer Olympics but not at Paris 2024. Their most recent appearances before these Games were as follows: croquet (1900), karate (2020), lacrosse (1908), polo (1936), softball (2020) and tug-of-war (1920).
