Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first All-Star Game took place in 1933 at what stadium?

Answer: Comiskey Park

The first MLB All-Star Game took place on July 6th, 1933, at Comiskey Park, home of the Chicago White Sox. The AL beat the NL 4-2, with Babe Ruth hitting the very first All-Star Game home run in the third inning. Connie Mack and John McGraw were the respective managers of the AL and NL squads.
2. In which of the following years did the All-Star game not take place?

Answer: 1945

Due to war-time travelling restrictions, the 1945 All-Star Game was cancelled. The game was due to take place at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox (the Sox got to host it the following year instead).

In place of the All-Star Game, a series of inter-league games took place - the New York Yankees played the New York Giants, the Chicago Cubs met the Chicago White Sox, the St Louis Browns met the St Louis Cardinals, the Philadelphia Athletics played the Philadelphia Phillies, the Boston Red Sox met the Boston Braves, the Cincinnati Reds played the Cleveland Indians and the Brooklyn Dodgers met the Washington Senators. The Detroit Tigers were scheduled to meet the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the Government refused to give the Tigers a travel permit.
3. Which city hosted the first All-Star Game to be played in a domed stadium?

Answer: Houston

The 1968 All-Star Game took place at the Astrodome, home of the Houston Astros. The Astrodome was opened in 1965 and was dubbed the "eighth wonder of the world". The NL won the game 1-0 in a game dominated by pitchers. Willie Mays scored the game's only run in the first inning.
4. What is the connection between the 1961 All-Star Game at Fenway Park in Boston, and the 2002 game at Miller Park in Milwaukee?

Answer: Both games ended in a tie

The 1961 All-Star game at Fenway Park was tied at 1-1 after nine innings when torrential rain made it impossible to continue. In 2002, at Miller Park, the game was tied at 7-7 after 11 innings when both teams ran out of pitchers. MLB introduced a new rule after this, beginning in 2025, with the game being decided by a home-run derby type contest if the score is tied after nine innings.
5. In which year did the All-Star Game first take place on the west coast?

Answer: 1959

The first All-Star Game to take place on the west coast was the 1959 edition, which was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the temporary home of the Dodgers. This was only the second season in which the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants had played on the west coast since relocating from New York and Brooklyn.

The AL won the game 5-3, and Jerry Walker of the Baltimore Orioles was the winning pitcher.
6. Toronto hosted the first MLB All-Star Game to take place in Canada.

Answer: False

The first All-Star Game to take place on Canadian soil was the 1982 edition, which was held at the Olympic Stadium, home of the Montreal Expos. The NL won 4-1 with Dave Concepecion of the Cincinnati Reds hitting a home run and being named MVP. Toronto would have to wait until 1991 to host its first All-Star Game.
7. The biggest crowd in All-Star Game history (72,086), attended the 1981 game at which stadium?

Answer: Cleveland Stadium

Prior to 1981, Cleveland Stadium, the former home of the Cleveland Indians, already held the record for biggest All-Star Game attendance, with just under 70,000 attending both the 1935 and 1954 games. The 1981 game set a new mark of 72,086. The NL win 5-4 in what was the first All-Star Game played on a Sunday.
8. Which stadium was home to the first All-Star night game, in 1943?

Answer: Shibe Park

The All-Star Game had always been a daytime affair until 1943, when wartime restrictions saw it played at night. Shibe Park, home at the time to both the Philadelphia Athletics and Phillies, was the venue as the AL won 5-3. The last daytime All-Star Game took place at RFK Stadium in Washington in 1969, after the original night game was rained out.
9. Which of these New York stadiums did NOT host an All-Star Game during the 20th century?

Answer: Citi Field

The original Yankee Stadium hosted three All-Star Games during the 20th century, the Polo Grounds, home of the Giants, hosted it twice, and Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, just once.

Shea Stadium, the original home of the New York Mets, hosted the 1964 game -- but their new home, Citi Field, didn't open until 2009, and first held an All-Star Game in 2013.
10. In 1949, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to start in an All-Star Game when he played second base for the NL at which stadium?

Answer: Ebbets Field

Jackie Robinson had broken the MLB color bar in 1947 when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and it was at the Dodgers' own stadium, Ebbets Field, that he made his All-Star debut in 1949. Three other African-American players, Larry Doby, Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe also appeared in the game, though not as starters. The AL won a high-scoring game 11-7.
