Answer:

Australian Rules football has its origins in Bryant's Hotel in Melbourne, where the first ten rules of the game were transcribed in 1859. This was the beginning of a game intended to keep cricketers fit during the winter months.

The first two teams formed were Geelong and Melbourne, in 1859, followed by Carlton in 1864 and Essendon in 1872. The first competition was the Victorian Football Association, formed in 1877. The Victorian Football League was formed in 1897, when 8 teams left the VFA:

Melbourne Demons
South Melbourne Swans (1874)
St Kilda Saints (1873)

1908 .. Richmond Tigers join, VFL expands to 9 teams.
1925 .. VFL expands to 12 teams upon admission of Hawthorn Hawks, North Melbourne Kangaroos and Footscray Bulldogs (became Western Bulldogs in 1997).

1982 .. South Melbourne moved interstate and became the Sydney Swans.
1987 .. two non-Victorian clubs join: West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears. VFL now has 14 teams.
1990 .. VFL changes its name to Australian Football League.
1991 .. Adelaide Crows join the AFL as 15th team.
1995 .. Fremantle Dockers join as the 16th.
1996 .. Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears merge to become Brisbane Lions.
1997 .. Port Adelaide Power join as 16th team.
2011 .. Gold Coast Suns join as 17th.
2012 .. Greater Western Sydney Giants join as the 18th team.
