Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Club Atlético Boston River; Danubio Fútbol Club; Liverpool Fútbol Club

Answer: Uruguay

It will likely come as no surprise that most of the nations in South America take football as their national sport. Uruguay is one of them, being home to prolific players for more than a century. While the Uruguayan National Team has won Olympic Games in the past (1924 and 1928), they also won the first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1930. Football was brought into Uruguay by British expats, so many of its original teams are built around the many rowing clubs found around the country. All three options here are based in Montevideo and are part of the Uruguayan Primera División.
2. Club Atlético River Plate; Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield; Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Answer: Argentina

Argentina, as a nation, is intrinsically linked to the sport of football, and most of its citizens seem to feel the same way. Winners of the FIFA World Cup in 1978, 1986, and 2022, the nation also has Olympic gold medals in the sport from 2004 and 2008. On the home front, the Argentine Primera División acts as the gateway for the country's top players, many of whom become stars on the international level. With a history dating back to 1891, the teams provided here are just a small sample of past winners of the league and the Copa Argentina.
3. Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras; Sport Club Corinthians Paulista; Clube de Regatas do Flamengo

Answer: Brazil

FIFA World Cup winners on a national level in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, Brazil is one of the most decorated nations in the world for football, being home to a massive concentration of top players and being a given participants for major competitions worldwide. Winners of the Olympic gold in 2016 and 2020, they battle it out for the Copa do Brasil on home turf and, in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, that's done by twenty teams.

The formal league for this started in 1959 as Taça Brasil, and it's where players like Pelé got their start.
4. Atlético Nacional S. A.; Millonarios Fútbol Club; Asociación Deportivo Cali

Answer: Colombia

Though Colombia is often ranked, internationally, as one of the top teams in the world (it's generally just behind Brazil and Argentina), it's always a bridesmaid situation. Colombia has qualified for the FIFA World Cup multiple times but topped out at third place in 2013. Categoría Primera A, which contains the country's top players, has clubs all over the country with Atlético Nacional S. A. based in Medellín, Millonarios Fútbol Club based in Bogotá, and Asociación Deportivo Cali in Palmira. They compete, of course, for the Copa Colombia.
5. Club Olimpia; Cerro Porteño; Club Libertad

Answer: Paraguay

Frequently seen in the FIFA World Cup roster, Paraguay had its first football game in 1867 and it's remained a critical part of the country's identity ever since. Despite this, it took until 2010 before Paraguay made it into the quarterfinals matches of the event.

The Paraguayan Primera División leads the roster on the national level with Club Olimpia, Cerro Porteño, and Club Libertad all making their home in the capital city of Asunción and leading the pack for wins of the Copa Paraguay.
6. Club Sporting Cristal S.A.; Club Universitario de Deportes; Sport Boys Association

Answer: Peru

One of the earlier nations in South America to adopt football as a pastime, Peru would start playing games in the 1860s but form the Peruvian Football Federation in the 1920s, overseeing the national team and the league system starting with the Peruvian Primera División. Peru, on the national stage, saw great heights in the 1970s, during which they participated in two FIFA World Cups (and another in 1980).

The clubs provided for this question are all amongst those with the most frequent appearances in this first division.
7. Sport Vereniging Robinhood; Sport Vereniging Transvaal; Inter Moengotapoe

Answer: Suriname

Suriname, while a small country, has still dabbled in football like its fellow South American nations, but due to its size it's not all-too-often featured. Being a former Dutch colony, Suriname has also, historically, seen many of its best players take positions across the Atlantic, joining the Netherlands' National Team for competitions.

This said, Suriname still has a league system with the SVB Eerste Divisie which hosts twelve teams in the country's highest echelon. Most teams, including those listed, play in and around Paramaribo.
8. Barcelona Sporting Club; Club Sport Emelec; Club Deportivo El Nacional

Answer: Ecuador

Headed by the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol, Ecuador follows suit with the rest of South America in seeing football as one of the more important pastimes around. Ecuador first qualified for the FIFA World Cup ine 2002. In their home country, players advance to their peak in the Liga Pro Ecuador Serie A, where sixteen teams vie for the Copa Ecuador. Barcelona Sporting Club, based in Guayaquil, is one of the oldest and most celebrated while Club Sport Emelec and Club Deportivo El Nacional (from Guayaquil and Quito, respectively) follow close behind.
9. Club Deportivo Palestino; Club de Deportes Cobresal; Everton de Viña del Mar

Answer: Chile

Established as a major sport in Chile in the 19th century, football was established with a league system as early as 1895, allowing national teams to be overseen by proper rules and put them up for FIFA contention very early in the organization's life. Hosting the FIFA World Cup in 1962, they placed third, their first time on the podium. Though there are sixteen teams in the Chilean Primera División, the nation is vast, and not all cities are represented at any given time.

This said, Santiago is often well represented (Club Deportivo Palestino, for instance).
10. Club Always Ready; Club The Strongest; Club Social, Cultural y Deportivo de Blooming

Answer: Bolivia

Home to thousands of official football clubs under their umbrella, Bolivia has a prominent football culture. The Bolivian Primera División, however, generally contains sixteen qualifying teams every year battling for the Copa de la División Profesional (formerly the Copa Bolivia). Making their way to the top, generally, are long-established teams like El Alto's Club Always Ready, Club The Strongest, from La Paz, and Club Social, Cultural y Deportivo de Blooming from Santa Cruz. Club The Strongest celebrated their centenary in 2008.
