Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Heart of Midlothian vs Hibernian

Answer: Edinburgh Derby

The Edinburgh derby is contested between the biggest two clubs in Scotland's capital city, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian (formed in 1874 and 1875 respectively) - they are usually referred to by the abbreviated names of Hearts and Hibs. They first met in 1875 and 150 years later (2025-26 season), they had faced each other 345 times.

Whilst, nationally, they have lived in the shadow of the Glasgow duo of Celtic and Rangers, both have had temporary periods of success, and their head-to-head meetings are amongst the most ferocious in Scottish football.

It's the longest running rivalry in UK football.
2. Ipswich Town vs Norwich City

Answer: Old Farm Derby

Ipswich Town and Norwich City are based in the East Anglia counties of Suffolk and Norfolk respectively. Their meetings are known either as the East Anglian derby or the Old Farm derby. The two clubs met for the first time in 1902 and had played each other 155 times by the conclusion of season 2025-26.
3. Millwall vs West Ham United

Answer: Dockers Derby

There are a number of local derbies in London, bur without doubt the fiercest is that between Millwall and West Ham. This match is traditionally known as the Dockers derby due to the fact that both clubs were founded in the docklands area of east London.

The clubs first met in 1899, and have had played each other in competitive matches 99 times by the end of season 2025-26. Due to the fact that the clubs have been in different divisions for much of the the recent decades, meetings in the 21st century have been few and far between, which probably adds to the hype when they do actually play each other. Sadly, meetings between the two clubs traditionally result in serious fan violence.
4. Blackburn Rovers vs Burnley

Answer: East Lancashire Derby

Blackburn Rovers (formed in 1875) and Burnley (formed in 1882) are based in former mill towns just 11 miles apart in the east of the county of Lancashire. Two of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888, the pair first met four years earlier in 1884. They've had 108 meetings in total by the end of season 2025-26. Another nickname for this rivalry is "El Lanclasico".
5. Derby County vs Nottingham Forest

Answer: East Midlands Derby

Derby County and Nottingham Forest are based in cities just 16 miles apart, and have been contesting the East Midlands derby since 1892. There were 109 meetings between the teams in major competitions by the conclusion of season 2025-26. The clubs are particulalry linked by one man, Brian Clough, who managed both teams to league title success in the 1970s. The A52 road between the two cities was named "Brian Clough Way" in his honour in 2005.

Games between Leicester City and either Derby or Forest are also referred to as East Midlands derbies, although fans of the latter two don't regard Leicester as their main rivals - indeed, Leicester also contest the M69 derby vs Coventry City.
6. West Bromwich Albion vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Answer: Black Country Derby

The Black Country is a nickname of an area of the West Midlands located north and west of Birmingham. Wolverhampton and West Bromwich are both located in this area, and their football teams, normally referred to as Wolves and West Brom, contest the Black Country derby. The clubs first met in 1896 and had met 163 times in competitive matched by the end of the 2025-26 season.

Matches between either Wolves or West Brom against a third team in the area, Walsall, can also be considered a Black Country derby. However, Walsall traditionally play their football in the lower divisions so meetings against either of the "big two" are quite infrequent.
7. Brighton & Hove Albion vs Crystal Palace

Answer: M23/A23

One of the more unusual rivalries in UK football is that between Brighton on the south coast and Crystal Palace, who are based in south London (formed in 1901 and 1905 respectively). The clubs are around 40 miles apart and are connected by the A23 road and M23 motorway.

The rivalry took hold in the 1970s when the teams were both in the third tier and vying for promotion. The first meeting between the teams came in 1921 and, by the conclusion of season 2025-26, they had met 145 times in all competitions.
8. Celtic vs Rangers

Answer: Old Firm Derby

Celtic and Rangers, from Glasgow, have dominated Scottish football since the late 19th century. They are collectively known as the "Old Firm". Their rivalry is commonly regarded as the fiercest in the whole of the UK, not just Scotland. They first met in a friendly match in 1888, and, by the close of the 2025-26, had met 452 times in league and major cup competitions, as well as another 171 times in minor cups.

The rivalry between the clubs isn't just a football one, with religion, politics and social history playing a major part.
9. Newcastle United vs Sunderland

Answer: Tyne-Wear Derby

The two biggest clubs in northeast England, Newcastle and Sunderland, contest the Tyne-Wear derby, named after the respective rivers that the cities stand on. Their stadiums are located just 10 miles apart. The first meeting between the teams took place in 1888, and they had met 159 times by the end of season 2025-26. Sadly, recent seasons has seen the fixture marred by fan violence, including a notorious incident in 2013 when a Newcastle fan punched a police horse.
10. Aston Villa vs Birmingham City

Answer: Second City Derby

Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK and is known as the "Second City". Aston Villa (formed in 1874) have been by far the most successful club in the city through the years, with Birmingham City normally trailing in their wake. The first Second City derby took place in 1879, when City were known by their original name of Small Heath Alliance (the club was formed in 1875).

By the conclusion of season 2025-26, the teams had met in 126 competitive matches. Sadly, matches in the 21st century have been associated with fan violence, with Villa player Jack Grealish attacked on the pitch by a City fan in 2019.
