David's longstanding feud with the Martins began in late 1997 when Adam wound up in the hospital and David decided to make it look like Jake poisoned him, since Jake was Adam's doctor. David slipped Adam some poison but luckily Adam survived. Jake, Allie, and Liza teamed up to get the goods on David framing Jake.

They did this by having Stuart impersonate Adam and videotaping David attempt to, once again, attempt to kill Adam. David left town shortly after he was caught framing Jake.

David returned to Pine Valley right before Holidays exploded after Lee Hawkins rigged the boiler. He had a conversation with Liza right before Holidays went up in smoke from the explosion. Lee's daughter, Camille, attempted to get everyone out of the restaurant but it was too late. Everyone was caught in the restaurant when it exploded and Camille died.

David did, in fact, lie about Erica wanting to hurry back to town. It was actually David who was in a hurry to stop Adam and Liza's wedding since he was going to announce at their nuptuals that Adam, not Jake, was the father of Liza's unborn child, Colby. Adam and Liza did not get married at that time since Liza got some pains from the pregnancy (they married a couple months after this).

When Erica found out about David lying, she knocked him out and tied his hand to a vice in her basement. Her theory was David crashing the car that left her face scarred took her away from her career. So, with putting David's hand in a vice and crushing it, she would be taking him away from his job as a doctor. David told Erica the tragic story of how his mother, Vanessa, goaded his father into suicide.

This caused Erica to feel sorry for David and she removed his hand from the vice.

At the 1999 Crystal Ball, Alex envisioned David as Geoffrey Ashford, the man she pushed down the stairs when she caught him raping and killing his daughter, Cassandra. So, she pushed David down the stairs just like she did Geoffrey. David survived and suffered no life changing injuries. David and Alex's feud stemmed from Alex blaming David for her friend's, Siobhan Ewing, suicide.

Amy Carson was a nurse at Pine Valley Hospital and she and David had a one night stand. She planned on turning him in for their one night stand but David, in turn, told her he would make her pay if she confessed anything about their night together. Amy decided not to turn in David.

David was arrested at this time for drugging people on a yacht with libidozone. This happened right after he won an award with Dixie. While in jail, he punched a wall and thus injured his hand.

David's medical license was suspended in late 2002 when it was revealed he gave Maria Santos an unapproved drug when he found her after the plane crash of 1997. David treating her did save Maria's life but the drug wiped out her memory. With his license revoked, he worked as a doctor at The Front Street Clinic. One day, right after Bianca was raped, David found her on the rooftop of the clinic, attempting suicide. David persuaded her to get off the roof, which Bianca did.

David was about to reveal to Bianca that "Bess Chandler" was really her daughter, Miranda Montgomery. However, Krystal told David that he was Babe's father so as to throw him off track. Later, it turned out to be true that Davdi was, in fact, Babe's father so he chose to put his daughter's interests ahead of Bianca's. David was arrested for what he did during the baby switch story and his punishment was community service and losing his medical license for some time.

His license eventually got reinstated.

Palmer was having heart problems immediately after the explosion at The Mardi Gras Ball. Since Palmer was on The Board of Directors at Pine Valley Hospital, David said that he would only help Palmer if Palmer promised to get him his job back at Pine Valley Hospital. Palmer agreed, David saved his life, and David got his position back as a cardiologist at Pine Valley Hospital.

David left behind a videotape that was filled with information on many Pine Valley residents. One part of the tape contained a sample about Tad and Dixie's missing daughter, Kate. Since David hated the Martins, a lot of his tape was about the many members of the Martin family tree.
