Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In one segment of the episode 'Treehouse of Horror XII', the Simpsons buy a robot-controlled house. Which celebrity's voice did Marge select for the house because she recognised him from 'Remington Steele'?

Answer: Pierce Brosnan

In the 'House of Whacks' segment, Marge selected from three voices - Elvis was not an option - for the Ultrahouse, and chose the charming voice of Pierce Brosnan. Things got out of hand quickly, with the house falling in love with Marge and trying to kill Homer.

Pierce Brosnan's role of Remington Steele on the 1980s' detective show of that name was a charming ex-con artist who assumes the real-life embodiment of the fictitious persona that Laura Holt had developed to be a male figurehead for her detective agency. He followed this with four films as James Bond, and numerous other roles showing he could actually act, and did not just have personal charm working for him onscreen.
2. In an episode of 'Family Guy' titled 'Mr Saturday Knight', you may have recognised the voice of the Black Knight of the Renaissance Fair as belonging to an elfin member of the 'Saturday Night Live' show. Which of these was it?

Answer: Will Ferrell

In this 2001 episode, Peter loses his job at the toy factory after his boss, Mr. Weed, dies at Peter's home during a dinner party. Lois then tells Peter to go after his dream of being a Renaissance Fair jouster. When he flirts with Maid Madeline, he finds himself facing a duel with her champion, the Black Knight.

Will Ferrell was a regular on "SNL" between 1995 and 2002. His other roles have been mostly in comedies, with his portrayal of Buddy in the 2003 film 'Elf' the one referenced in the question. He created the role of Ron Burgundy in several movies, and has branched out into writing, directing, and producing. You may also have noticed his voice on a number of other animated shows, including as Coach Lucas on the episode of 'King of the Hill' titled 'Three Coaches and a Bobby' and Bob Oblong on 'The Oblongs'.
3. When Yogi Victor espoused his own brand of yoga in the 'King of the Hill' episode 'Hank's Back', you might have heard echoes of a pirate, a playwright, or a chocolate maker. Who provided this voice?

Answer: Johnny Depp

When Hank injured his back, the doctor suggested yoga. Hank leaves after a few classes, unhappy with Yogi Victor's quirky (to put it mildly) personality. Nevertheless, when he is forced to return in order to get Workers' Compensation, he has to admit that the yoga itself has merits. While facing the board, Hank tells them that if he were not in pain, there was no way he would deal with a freak like Yogi Victor.

Johnny Depp has had a long career, including a number of collaborations with director Tim Burton, which have contributed to his reputation for undertaking roles as unusual characters. These include 1990's 'Edward Scissorhands' and 2005's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' (referred to in the question). His character of Jack Sparrow in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series of films was equally outrageous, and earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, as did his portrayal of J M Barrie in 'Finding Neverland' (2004).
4. On 'Bob's Burgers', the voice of Linda's eccentric sister Gayle may sound familiar, especially if you watched 'Will & Grace', because it is provided by which of these actors?

Answer: Megan Mullally

Gayle Genarro is a recurring character who almost makes the main Belcher family look normal. Almost. She lives alone in a basement studio apartment within walking distance of her older sister's family, with three cats (Jean Paw'd Van Damme, Pinkeye, and Mr. Business). The cats loom large in her life, as do her artistic endeavours. She doesn't seem to have any source of regular income, and regularly needs to borrow money from Linda and Bob.

On 'Will & Grace', Megan Mullally played Karen, the wife of a multi-millionaire who took on a job as Grace's assistant to amuse herself. They become friends, although Grace (Deborah Messing) once described Karen as "a spoiled, shrill, gold-digging socialite who would sooner chew off her own foot than do an honest day's work." She and Will (Erick McCormack) slowly develop an amicable relationship; she is closer, however, to the equally narcissistic Jack (Sean Hayes). Megan Mullally received numerous awards for her portrayal of Karen, including eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (with wins in 2000 and 2006).
5. In the pilot episode of 'Futurama', Fry visited a museum of famous heads. Which 'Star Trek' actor, one of the heads he encountered, was unable to oblige with a Vulcan salute?

Answer: Leonard Nimoy

'Space Pilot 3000' saw a pizza delivery guy transported (via a cryogenics accident) into the future, where he was allocated a position as a member of the Planet Express delivery crew. As he is exploring New New York, he encounters the robot Bender, who takes him to the Head Museum. When Spock, being a head in a jar, is unable to perform the Vulcan salute, Fry is disappointed. The head appears in three other episodes, 'A Head in the Polls' and 'Where No Fan Has Gone Before'.

Leonard Nimoy seemed to have a love-hate relationship with the character of Spock, with which he was associated for nearly 50 years, starting in 1964 when 'Star Trek' debuted, and continuing intermittently until his final role in 2013's movie 'Star Trek into Darkness'. In 1975, he wrote an autobiography titled 'I Am Not Spock', followed in 1995 by 'I Am Spock'.
6. On what show is Stan's boss at the CIA, played by Patrick Stewart?

Answer: American Dad

Sir Patrick Stewart provides the voice of Avery Bullock, a Deputy Director at the CIA, who is only slightly less paranoid than is Stan Smith, father of the family at the centre of the show. There are numerous references to the actor's role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', and his reputation as a serious Shakespearean actor is a foil to some of the bizarre lines the character is given.

Avery Bullock makes a crossover appearance on the 'Family Guy' episode titled 'Lois Kills Stewie', when Stewie takes control of the CIA's supercomputer and becomes "President of the World". Patrick Stewart provided the voice of Number One, head of the local Stonecutters society in the episode 'Homer the Great' in the sixth season of 'The Simpsons', and the voice of the Huntmaster in the episode '31st Century Fox' in the seventh season of 'Futurama'.
7. In the episode of 'Bob's Burgers' titled 'The Horse Rider-er', the voice of Tina's imaginary horse was that of which actor, who also played the character who married Phoebe on 'Friends'?

Answer: Paul Rudd

The three incorrect answers were the stars of 'Friends', but it was Paul Rudd who played Mike Hannigan, the blind date Joey arranged for Phoebe in the Season 9 episode 'The One with the Pediatrician'. Like so many relationships in the series, things are on-again, off-again, but the couple marries in the tenth season episode 'The One with Phoebe's Wedding'.

In 'The Horse Rider-er', Tina goes to a riding camp, where she discovers that the nasty pony she is assigned has nothing on Jericho, her imaginary horse who anticipates her every wish. She had abandoned her imaginary companion in favour of reality; by the end of the episode, she chose to revert and rode Jericho in the final show day of the camp.
8. What former boxer, using words, fought with Hank Hill over quality grills?

Answer: George Foreman

George Foreman was a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist in boxing, but he may be more familiar to non-boxing fans as the promoter of the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, or for the trivia fact that he named all five of his sons George.

In the 'King of the Hill' episode 'Boxing Luanne', Hank's boss Buck Strickland organises a series of rigged boxing matches that make Luanne believe she is actually a successful boxer. This leads to her deciding to take on the best female boxer in Texas, Freeda Foreman. When Hank realises that her earlier success was all due to fixed matches, he approaches Freeda's father and asks him to get the fight cancelled. George originally agrees, but when Hank refuses to sell the Foreman Grill at Strickland Propane, the fight is back on. Luanne loses, of course, but gains credibility for the fact that she went three rounds against a professional boxer.
9. On 'Family Guy', who made a cameo appearance as reporter Murphy Brown in the episode 'A Picture is Worth a Thousand Bucks'?

Answer: Candice Bergen

Candice Bergen played the title role in 'Murphy Brown' between 1988 and 1998, before the character appeared in this 2000 episode of 'Family Guy'. This was not the only episode in which Candice Bergen appeared - in 'I am Peter, Hear Me Roar', which aired a few weeks earlier, she provided the voice of Gloria Ironbachs, a feminist lawyer who agrees to drop a case of sexual harassment against Peter if he undergoes sensitivity training.

When Gloria suggests that Lois, by providing a poor role model, is responsible for Peter's sexist attitude towards women, the two get into a physical fight.

This triggers Peter into unreforming and reverting to his familiar crude self.
10. In season 3 of 'The Simpsons', the nuclear power plant's softball team got help from some MLB All-Stars. Which of these was one of the nine ringers imported by Mr Burns in 'Homer at the Bat'?

Answer: Darryl Strawberry

When Homer's Wonderbat helps his team make the finals, Mr Burns makes a substantial wager on the outcome, then decides to (temporarily) employ some baseball stars at the plant, to boost his team's chance of success. They included Ken Griffey Jr., Ozzie Smith, Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens, Mike Scioscia, Steve Sax, Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly, and Darryl Strawberry, who all featured as themselves.

Of course, things go horribly wrong, with seven of the players suffering bizarre accidents: Ken Griffey develops gigantism from using the nerve tonic supplied by Mr Burns; Ozzie Smith disappears while visiting the Springfield Mystery Spot; Jose Canseco is trapped into retrieving a woman's possessions, one after another, from her burning house; Roger Clemens (who had broken Homer's bat during a practice session) is hypnotized into acting like a chicken; Mike Scioscia gets radiation poisoning due to the nuclear plant's unsafe working conditions; Steve Sax is arrested as a suspicious outsider and charged with every unsolved murder in Springfield; Wade Boggs is knocked out by Barney Gumble in an argument. When Don Mattingly arrives at the game, Mr Burns kicks him off the team for failing to remove his non-existent sideburns. This leaves only Darryl Strawberry available to play - and he takes Homer's usual spot. Burns's erratic management ideas led to Homer being knocked unconscious while pinch-hitting for Strawberry, sending in the winning run.
