Deer Woman Trivia Quiz

John Landis' outlandish tale of seduction and wild, primal fears is found in the title "Deer Woman", which explores brutal murders, which, in the eyes of a jaded detective, look to be more like animal attacks than human-driven homicides. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the first attack of the story take place?

Answer: Outside a bar

The story begins at Morgan's Tavern and Grill where a drunk patron, who is playing pool, decides that he needs to use the restroom. His friend takes his shot and tells the man that the restroom is actually out of order, so he heads outside. As he stumbles around to the back of a van, he hears a man screaming from within a large transport truck.

Although he nears the door, he doesn't actually decide to open it after the screaming stops. Instead, he turns back around and walks into the bar. After this, the door snaps off the truck, landing further away on the ground. The next morning, a man exits the bar to find the truck still outside.

As well, he finds four deer standing near the passenger side door (which has now made its way back onto the truck, although it is badly dented).

While he watches, the deer mysteriously disappear in front of his eyes.
2. When Detective Faraday interviews the bartender, what colour eyes does the man say the Native American woman has?

Answer: Yellow

When Detective Dwight Faraday sits down at his desk in a local police station, he reminisces about a woman he once loved before Officer Reed interrupts him, telling him that he needs to go out in the field to work on a case. Faraday finds this odd as he is usually called for animal attacks as opposed everyday disputes.

The two find themselves at the tavern outside the city and the man who saw the deer earlier tells them to check the truck, still waiting in the parking lot. Faraday goes to open the door, but it falls off as he pulls it.

He and Reed try to determine the way that the door was damaged (Reed assumes it was from the outside, but Faraday notes it was done from the inside, and bent back into shape on the outside) before the man instructs them to look inside.

Here, they find the mutilated corpse of the driver in the back seat. After sealing off the area, Faraday speaks with the bartender, who notes that the driver left drunk with a Native American woman, who he describes as being 'perfectly carved, as if someone took time to make her'. Detective Faraday is also surprised by the way that the bartender notes the woman's yellow eyes, which he says represents 'a deer trapped in the headlights'.
3. When Faraday checked in with the mortician, what was described as the cause of death?

Answer: Massive Blunt Force Trauma

Faraday is called back to the station to look into a small animal dispute involving a monkey and a small dog. During this time, while not listening to the case of the dog owner, he notices a horseshoe hanging on the wall of the office and realizes that the body was trampled from the groin up.

This is why the body wasn't even recognizable at the crime scene. He decides to check into the autopsy to figure out the truth. Here, he meets the coroner, Dana, and she mentions the fact that the body was beaten to death, but it seems like a car ran over him numerous times, bringing him to the state he's in.

She also notes the fact that the victim died in a state of arousal before asking Faraday why he's even working on the case, as he was called off it.

He notes that he has some interest as all signs point to an animal attack, including hoof prints on the corpse that were unnoticed before.
4. What does the 'deer woman's' second victim buy for her at a bar?

Answer: Cosmopolitan

At a hotel bar, a man talks on his cell phone about a successful business deal at work before a beautiful, yet silent woman walks up to the bar and sits next to him. With a smile on her face, she listens to every word he says and allows him to buy her a cosmopolitan. He makes note of the fact that he's only in town for the night and that he would like a good restaurant to eat at for dinner. He invites her to dine with him and she nods in acceptance. She quickly makes it known that she wants to leave with him.
The two skip dinner and go back to the man's hotel room. Here, she follows him in and locks the door behind them. Quickly, she sits him down on the bed and begins to undress. They later find his corpse.
The woman later makes her way to a pawn shop, where the man behind the counter asks if he can be of any help. She is seen standing in front of a pair of deer antlers as he says this.
5. What is not one of the wacky 'explanations' for the first murder that Faraday thinks of while in bed?

Answer: The victim and the woman from the bar go to his truck, but along the way, the man spots a group of deer standing near the road. As he attempts to shoo them away, they chase him to his truck and trample him to death inside.

In the morgue, Faraday and Dana hypothesize how the victim could have been killed. Dana wonders if the 'mystery woman' beat the victim to death with a deer leg, but Faraday finds the entire situation a bit bewildering as it's so obscure. They call it a night around 1am and Faraday goes home to bed. That night, he dreams of three different situations, all of which he later dismisses as 'retarded' or 'stupid'. The next day, while staring at the picture on his desk, Faraday is interrupted by Officer Reed who comes to tell him that another 'hamburger body' has been found, this time, it's the businessman from the night before. Dana notes that the case is essentially the same as the one before it; massive blunt force trauma, state of arousal, etc.

The only thing different is a trace of deer hair under the fingernails of the cadaver.
6. Where do Faraday and Reed find the arm of the pawn shop victim?

Answer: On the roof of the building

Shortly after the businessman is checked into the morgue, a third body is carted into Dana's room. This victim, identified as the clerk at the pawn shop, was sent back tot he station to have an autopsy performed (as per Patterson, who is still on the case), but there's still tons of cops at the crime scene.

The reason? The victim is still missing an arm. Faraday and Reed decide to check into it. As soon as they arrive, they find the arm hanging over the eavestrough of the store, and they alert the other officers.

Although the detectives seem to be against the duo being at the crime scene, Faraday takes the chance to look around and gather his own hypothesis on the crime. Reed also restates the fact that it could possibly be an animal attack, regardless. Faraday takes long strides across the roof, following bloody prints on the ground before they leave.
7. What happens when Faraday walks home from the pawn shop crime scene?

Answer: He is attacked by a mugger

Rather than ride with Reed, Faraday takes a mile-long walk through town back to his place. Along the way, he walks past a large Native American mural, paying no attention to the obvious pictures on the wall. He does, however, suspect that he hears the clicking of hooves behind him.

He attributes this to the fact that he may be 'losing it'. Soon after though, he is ambushed by a mugger, who holds a knife to his neck and demands his money. Instead, Faraday gets out of the hold and aims his gun at the man, knocking the knife out of his hands.

Instead of cuffing him, Faraday plants the knife into the man's arm and tells him to walk to the hospital, four blocks away. The man is confused by this. At the same time, little do both of them know, but a beautiful woman watches them from the shadows.
8. What is the name of the chief of police who assigns Faraday to the case?

Answer: Chief Einhorn

When the two Detectives contest their theories behind the murders in front of the police chief, he knocks Faraday's idea out of the air as it would be impossible for a wild animal to roam around the city without being spotted, and only this would result in such an animal attack. Faraday cites a case which occurred in London regarding a freak were-wolf attack, and notes that a similar 'hybrid-animal' could be responsible for their murders as well.

The Chief fights this down as well, stating that the victims were pounded into mincemeat. Finally, Faraday notes the hoofprints on the roof of the pawn shop and states that it could only come from a bipedal man-beast running like a deer as the strides were too far apart.

Despite the absurd observation, the chief allows Faraday to be first to the next crime scene in order to solve the case. Patterson is assigned to solve the case of a man claiming that he was attacked by a cop with his own knife.
9. Where do Reed and Faraday learn of the 'deer woman'?

Answer: A casino

After discovering that the pawn shop clerk also had deer DNA on his body, Faraday and Reed decide to go out for lunch at the River Rock Casino, a new, local Native American Casino, and they talk about their jobs over the meal. Faraday describes his old partner, Ted, and how they investigated a murder together, which would be Ted's last.

When they arrived at a crackhouse, Faraday was nearly shot, but instead, he fired three shots at the gun-wielder. Both of these hit Ted as well though, killing him. Faraday notes that this is why his job has gone downhill, and why his wife left him. After their conversation, they decide to get back to the case.

While discussing their possibilities, a bartender overhears them and asks if they're into Native American mythology.

He then proceeds to tell them about the 'deer woman', a woman who goes to large gatherings, seduces a man, takes him somewhere secluded, then kills him and returns to the forest. Faraday claims this as their only theory.
10. Does Faraday shoot the 'deer woman'?

Answer: Yes

That night, Reed returns to the casino to drink and gamble, and although he begins losing out, his luck changes when he stops by a table and places his bets. After a single losing bet, the mystery woman slides in next to him, and without speaking, advises him on what to play on the table. He quickly places his faith in her and wins a fair amount of money before he ends up bringing her back to his place for the night. She quickly shuffles him off to the living room and locks the apartment door behind them. Before she can do anything though, the phone rings. When Reed picks it up, it's Faraday, and sensing the situation, he asks if the woman that Reed is with has feet. Reed immediately realizes his mistake and tells Faraday to call for back-up before he hangs up.
As Faraday makes his way to Reed's apartment, he nearly hits a deer on the city streets. He swerves, narrowly avoiding it and he makes his way into the apartment building to find Reed's place trashed. Reed's body is bloodied on the floor, and when Faraday calls for back-up, the deer woman leaps out of the darkness and attacks him. He manages to shoot her first though, and she falls to the ground. In order to determine the truth, he lifts her dress to find two deer hooves, proving that she is, in fact, the deer woman. She wakes up at this time, however, and she kicks him into the wall. She takes the time to escape, and Faraday follows her out, driving into the country to chase her.
When he reaches a quiet road, he swerves in front of her, causing her to stop. As he aims his gun at her, she kicks the car out of the way, and Faraday limps back inside to find that several deer have surrounded his vehicle, some of which attack his car. He gets off a few shots and continues his hunt. He later finds her at the side of the road, so he crashes into her, pinning her to a tree. As he gets out of his car, he finds that she is still alive. As she lifts the front end of the vehicle, he shoots at her head numerous times, but she disappears. As he slumps against his car, the cops drive up. He decides to claim it as an "animal attack".
