Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain George Mainwaring

Answer: Dad's Army

David Croft (1922-2011) had two major writing partnerships during his career, with Jimmy Perry and Jeremy Lloyd. His first sitcom, written with Perry, was "Dad's Army", which was broadcast from 1968-77, and deals with the activities of a Home Guard platoon during the Second World War.

Captain Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe, is the leader of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard. He is the town's bank manager, and is portrayed as pompous and self-important, although underneath this he is proud of his men and shows flashes of compassion when the situation allows it.
2. Corporal Jack Jones

Answer: Dad's Army

Corporal Jack Jones is a butcher by trade and allows his van to be used by the Home Guard troop as their main means of transport. A seasoned campaigner, he served in the Sudan, the Boer War and the First World War. One of his best-known catchphrases is "Don't panic, don't panic", uttered while he is very obviously panicking himself.

He was played by Clive Dunn, who at 48 years of age was considerably younger than the character he portrayed.
3. Reverend Timothy Farthing

Answer: Dad's Army

The Reverend Timothy Farthing is the vicar of St Aldhelm's Church, in whose hall the Home Guard meets on a weekly basis. Usually referred to simply by his title as "vicar", he resents having his hall taken over by Mainwaring's troop. He was played by Frank Williams.
4. Mrs Mavis Pike

Answer: Dad's Army

Mrs Mavis Pike, played by Janet Davies, is the widowed mother of Frank Pike, the youngest member of the Home Guard. She mothers him mercilessly, insisting that he wears a scarf while on parade. Frequent references during the series make clear that she is in an ongoing but clandestine relationship with Sergeant Wilson, who may even be the young Pike's father.
5. Captain Stephen Peacock

Answer: Are You Being Served?

David Croft's second big sitcom success was "Are You Being Served?", written with Jeremy Lloyd, and broadcast between 1972 and 1985. It was set in the clothing department of a large old-fashioned department store named Grace Brothers, and contained the usual mix of broadly defined characters, with their individual peculiarities and catch-phrases.

Captain Peacock is the "floorwalker", with responsibility for overseeing the staff on his particular floor. Somewhat pompous and officious, he attempts (not always successfully) to maintain order among the unruly staff. He was played by Frank Thornton.
6. Mrs Betty Slocombe

Answer: Are You Being Served?

Mrs Slocombe, played by Mollie Sugden, is the middle-aged senior sales assistant in the ladies' department. She is portrayed as somewhat humourless and self-important, totally unaware of the outrageous double-entendres involved in her stories about her pet cat, invariably referred to as "my pussy".
7. Miss Shirley Brahms

Answer: Are You Being Served?

Miss Brahms is the junior sales assistant in the ladies' department, working with Mrs Slocombe. Unlike her boss, she is young, working-class and attractive, making her an object of lust for Mr Lucas (Trevor Bannister), her opposite number in the men's department on the other side of the sales floor.

She was played by Wendy Richard, who went on to have a long-running role in the BBC soap opera "EastEnders".
8. Mr Wilberforce Humphries

Answer: Are You Being Served?

Mr Humphries, played by John Inman, is the extremely camp senior sales assistant in the men's clothing department. He is known for his catchphrase "I'm free", uttered as he minces across the sales floor to attend to an unsuspecting customer.
9. Bombardier "Gloria" Beaumont

Answer: It Ain't Half Hot Mum

David Croft wrote "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" with Jimmy Perry, and eight series were broadcast between 1974 and 1981. It was based around the experiences of a British Army concert party in India and Burma in 1945. Both Croft and Perry had served in similar concert parties during the Second World War, and the series was based on their own experiences.

Bombardier Beaumont, always referred to as "Gloria", is the most obviously camp member of the concert party, who often performs in drag as famous female film stars such as Ginger Rogers. He considers himself to be an artiste first and a soldier second and strongly resents the military elements of his job. He was played in the series by Melvyn Hayes.
10. Battery Sergeant Major Tudor Williams

Answer: It Ain't Half Hot Mum

Sergeant Major Williams, played by Windsor Davies, is a professional soldier, unlike the rest of the concert party, and considers it is job to turn them into proper soldiers rather than a "bunch of nancy boys". As such, he is portrayed as a stereotypical Sergeant Major figure, proud of his military service, whose catchphrase is the phrase "shut up", shouted in a loud voice.
11. Bearer Ranji Ram

Answer: It Ain't Half Hot Mum

The Indian Bearer Ranji Ram is one of the three native Indians who serve the concert party, the others being the Char Wallah (who serves the tea) and the Punkah Wallah (who works the punkah or fan that keeps the officers' quarters cool). He often introduces the episodes by addressing the viewers directly, peppering his anecdotes with "old Hindu proverbs".

He was played by the English actor Michael Bates, in a piece of casting that would raise a few eyebrows these days.
12. Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Reynolds

Answer: It Ain't Half Hot Mum

Lieutenant-Colonel Reynolds is the senior officer in charge of the concert party. As such, he plays no part in their performances, but is largely there as an authority figure, portrayed as a stereotypical British Army officer. The role was played by Donald Hewlett.
13. René Artois

Answer: 'Allo 'Allo!

"'Allo 'Allo!" was David Croft's last big TV success and was created with Jeremy Lloyd. Croft and Lloyd co-wrote the first six series, with Paul Adam taking over Croft's role for the final three. In total, the show ran from 1984-92. It was set in a small French town during the Nazi occupation and was a deliberate parody of a popular BBC drama series called "Secret Army" that ran from 1977-79.

René Artois, played by Gordon Kaye, is the owner of the village café, which is used by the Resistance as a safe house for two shot-down British airmen, while also being a popular eating place for the occupying Germans. To add to this, René is also trying to carry on various liaisons with the café waitresses, without his wife finding out.
14. Herr Otto Flick

Answer: 'Allo 'Allo!

Herr Flick is the local Gestapo officer, played by Richard Gibson for the first eight series, with David Janson taking over for the final one. He is a parody of the serious Gestapo officer depicted in many war films, with his steel-rimmed glasses, black leather coat and clipped accent, and is clearly based on the very much more dangerous character of Ludwig Kessler from "Secret Army".
15. Officer Crabtree

Answer: 'Allo 'Allo!

Officer Crabtree first appeared in the second series and is a British spy who is posing as a French police officer. The humour of his character comes from the fact that he speaks with an atrocious French accent, and mispronounces his words, usually to introduce a comical double entendre: he always introduces himself with the words "Good moaning".

He was played by Arthur Bostrom, who ironically spoke excellent French in real life.
16. Lieutenant Hubert Gruber

Answer: 'Allo 'Allo!

Lieutenant Gruber is one of the occupying German officers. He is the show's "comic homosexual" - pretty much all of Croft's shows have one - allowing for the sort of jokes about gay men and their proclivities which the British tend to find amusing. Throughout the series it is suggested that he has a crush on René Artois, although in a surprise development it is revealed at the end of the last series that after the war, he married Helga (the glamorous secretary of the German commandant).
