Enrique "Ricky" Martín Morales (b. 1971) is primarily known as a singer, having started performing with the Puerto Rican band Menudo when he was 12. He left the band in 1989, when he was already a year older than the usual age when band members were replaced to maintain the youthful profile. The next year he was offered a part in the Mexican soap opera 'Alcanzar una estrella II ' and a subsequent film, released in 1992. This led to a solo recording contract, but he did not forsake his acting, appearing as Martin in two episodes of the sitcom 'Getting By'.

In February 1994 he appeared for the first time on 'General Hospital', an american soap opera that first started its run in 1963. He portrayed Miguel Morez, a bartender and singer from Puerto Rico who was hiding from his fiancée's criminal father (and, for dramatic tension, also romantically involved with another character). He played the role for two years, gaining celebrity status before returning to his primary passion, music. He has since been dubbed The King of Latin Pop, and even those who do not follow pop music may be familiar with such titles as 'Livin' la Vida Loca' or 'She Bangs'.

Martin may have focused on his music, but he also kept on acting, starring as Ché in the 2012 Broadway revival of 'Evita', and gaining an Emmy nomination in 2018 for portraying Gianni Versace's partner, Antonio D'Amico, in 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story'.

Kylie Ann Minogue (b. 1968) grew up in Melbourne, where she took singing and dancing lessons as a child (along with her sister Danii, of whom more later). She was ten when she got her first part in a television show, 'The Sullivans'. In 1985 she took time off school to film the television children-targeted show 'The Henderson Kids', playing Charlotte 'Char' Kernow. When she was written out of the show, she auditioned unsuccessfully for 'Young Talent Time' (where Danii was already a cast member) before gaining the role of Charlene Mitchell on 'Neighbours'. Over the next few years, as the show gained popularity in the UK as well as Australia, the romance between Charlene and Scott Robinson (played by Jason Donovan) gained her celebrity status - and awards that included the "Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television".

While she was still working on 'Neighbours', Kylie continued to explore her singing, and had a hit with a cover of 'Locomotion' in 1987 that led to a recording contract with Stock Aitken Waterman - 'I Should Be So Lucky' reached the top of the charts in multiple countries while she was still contracted to play Charlene. In 1988, Charlene left 'Neighbours', moving to Brisbane with Scott, while Kylie moved to London. In 2022, for what was at the time expected to be the show's final episode, the couple returned to Ramsay Street, visiting their two children who had been introduced into the cast in 2014 and 2016.

Keith Peter Thomas Francis Julian John Duffy (b. 1974) was interested in music from a young age, performing as a drummer in bands from the age of 16. He was 19 when he auditioned for the newly forming Irish band Boyzone, becoming part of their original lineup along with Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Stephen Gately. Following the band's dissolution in 2000, he leveraged his celebrity status with appearances on such shows as 'Celebrity Big Brother'.

This television work led to a stint (originally planned for three weeks, extended to three years due to a positive audience response) as Ciaran McCarthy on the soap opera 'Coronation Street'. Ciaran was initially described as an Irish charmer, whose gift of the gab made him popular with men and (more especially) women. Murphy left 'Coronation Street' in 2005 to have more time with his family in Ireland, but returned in 2010 for about 18 months before leaving again. This second period involved juggling the show with appearing with a reunited (in 2008) Boyzone.

Answer: The Bold and the Beautiful

Peter John Wagner II (b. 1959) is best known as an actor, having appeared in multiple soap operas. His most famous part is probably Frisco Jones, a crime-fighting pop star who appeared for multiple stints on 'General Hospital' between 1983 and 2013. He played Warren Lockridge on 'Santa Barbara' from 1991 until 1993, Dr Peter Burns on the nighttime soap opera 'Melrose Place' between 1994 and 1999, and Jacques Dumont / Liam for three episodes of 'Sunset Beach' in 1997. In 2003 he joined the cast of 'The Bold and the Beautiful' as Nick Marone, a regular character until 2012, and one who has returned for some short story arcs later on.

In 1984, Wagner recorded the album 'All I Need', singing vocals with a studio band. The single of the title track was successful in the charts, peaking in 1985 at No 2 in the Billboard Hot 100. Another single from the album, 'Lady of My Heart', made the top 100, but is more notable for being used as the love theme for Frisco and Felicia (played by the woman who was going to become his first wife) on 'General Hospital'. He has released a number of albums and singles in the years since, but without achieving this early level of success again.

Answer: Degrassi

Aubrey Drake Graham (b. 1986) is a Canadian rapper known by his performance name of Drake. He was 15 when a friend's father got him the role of Jimmy Brooks on the teen soap 'Degrassi: The Next Generation', a part he played until 2008. Jimmy was a star basketball player until he was shot in the back, following which he was confined to a wheelchair for the duration. This forced cessation of his sport allowed him to discover his musical talent.

While Drake was acting in 'Degrassi', he was also working on recording himself, both individually and with others, producing several self-released mixtapes. In 2009, 'So Far Gone', which also featured Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Omarion, Lloyd, and Bun B, gained mainstream commercial success, and the start of a long-term high-profile celebrity. Most of his subsequent film and television appearances have been as himself.


Drake first gained recognition as Jimmy Brooks in the CTV teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-2008) and began his music career by independently releasing the mixtapes Room for Improvement (2006), Comeback Season (2007), and So Far Gone (2009), before signing with Young Money Entertainment

Danielle Jane Minogue (b. 1971) actually beat her older sister to appear on television, joining the cast of 'Young Talent Time' (an Australian show, hosted by Johnny Young and featuring young singers and dancers) in 1982. She remained a regular on the show until 1988, when she began the role of Emma Jackson on 'Home and Away', the 'other' Australian soap to provide a stepping stone to stardom for numerous talented Australians on their way up. Danii auditioned for the part of Marilyn Chambers while the show was first casting, but did not get the part. However, the producers thought she would bring a good presence to the screen, and had the writers create a character for her. She played the teenage tomboy, but a more aggressive and mixed-up character than her sister's character on 'Neighbours'. She was initially unsure about taking it on, both because she was in the middle of recording her first album ('Love and Kisses') and because the show taped in Sydney, so would require an interstate move. She appeared on 'Home and Away' for about a year, between September 1989 and August 1990.

Danii's career has involved a steady stream of successful pop releases, mainly considered dance tracks, along with film and television jobs. Her television work has often been in shows involving musical performance: she was a judge on 'The X Factor UK' and 'Australia's Got Talent'.

Nicholas Berry (b. 1963) started acting lessons at the age of eight and had a number of small parts on stage and screen before his big break as Simon 'Wicksy' Wicks in 'Eastenders', a part he played for five years between 1985 and 1990. Wicksy was added to the cast to be one of the young characters who would be involved in mature and complex situations - including adultery and the consequences thereof.

At an early point in his run, Wicksy sang a song titled 'Every Loser Wins' (from the album that Berry had just recorded), which was subsequently released as a single, reaching No 1 in the UK singles chart. When Berry joined the drama 'Heartbeat' as PC Nick Rowan in 1992, he sang the show's theme song, a cover of the 1958 Buddy Holly song of that name. This once again had chart success, and he released a second album.

Michael Damian Weir (b. 1962) uses the professional name of Michael Damian. He started performing as a musician in a family band with his brother called The Weirz, before recording a solo single in 1981 called 'She Did It'. An appearance on the television show 'American Bandstand' to promote the single (which made it to No 69 on the Hot 100) led to an offer to join 'The Young and the Restless'. He played the part of Danny Romalotti (a rock star, initially a teenage star) from 1981 until 1998, returning several times later for shorter stints. His absences were covered by the fact that rock stars spend a lot of time on tour. The storyline had previously been molded to account for Damian's absence to perform the title role in the 1994 Broadway production of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'.

Damian's musical career has included a number of albums, including a No 1 single on both the Hot 100 and Cash Box listings, 'Rock On' in 1989 (from the soundtrack of the movie 'Dream a Little Dream'). That same year, there were three singles released from his album 'Where Do We Go from Here', two of which made the Hot 100. The album peaked at 61 on the Hot 200 chart.

Damian has spent as much time on the production side of things as in front of the camera/microphone. He won a BMI award for songwriting for the single 'Was it Nothing at All', and wrote soundtracks for a number of the films he produced. His first feature film as a director was 'Hot Tamale' (2006), co-written and co-produced with his wife Janine (and including in the cast her father, James Best, familiar to many as Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane, from 'The Dukes of Hazzard').

Natalie Jane Imbruglia (b. 1975) grew up in New South Wales, where she studied several different types of dance. Her first television appearances were in commercials, before she left school at the age of 16 to pursue full-time acting. In January of 1992, she made her first appearance on 'Neighbours' as Beth Brennan, an apprentice builder who faced discrimination in the workplace, as well as the obligatory romantic ups and downs of a soap opera. She left the show after two years to devote more time to her music, returning briefly in 1994 and one last time in 2022 for what was then planned as the final episode of the show.

In 1994, she moved to London and signed a recording contract. Her debut single, a 1997 cover of 'Torn', was an international hit, shooting her to stardom. Her debut album, 'Left of the Middle', was similarly successful. Several years of celebrity followed, but when the 2009 album 'Come to Life' was a failure, she took a break from music and focused again on acting. She moved to Los Angeles and appeared in several films before returning to the recording studio and the world of touring in 2014.

Richard Lewis Springthorpe (b. 1949), who uses the stage name Rick Springfield, started off as a member of a number of bands in the UK (where his father was stationed for a time) and Australia, before joining the Australian pop-rock group Zoot between 1969 and 1971. His solo career started with the single 'Speak to the Sky', which made the Australian top 10 in 1972. Following a move to the United States in the middle of 1972, Springfield did some television work, making his acting debut in a 1977 episode of 'The Six Million Dollar Man'.


In 1981, the single 'Jessie's Girl', which reached No 1 in both the US and Australia, won a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. It also created a scheduling issue for Springfield, who had accepted the role of Dr Noah Drake on 'General Hospital' shortly before the single was released, never expecting it to be such a big hit. So his time on the show had to balance acting and touring. Of course, the popularity of his character helped the song sales, and music fans boosted the soap opera's ratings! In 1983 he left the show to concentrate on his music, but returned in 2005 as an older, alcoholic (therefore no longer practicing medicine) version of himself. He appeared irregularly between 2005 and 20076, before a new character, Eli Love, a rock star who is a dead ringer for Noah Drake, was introduced. This character gave Springfield the chance to sing on the show for the first time, performing 'Jessie's Song' at a charity concert.
