Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode "Tattoo" from the series "Star Trek: Voyager", which character had a flu?

Answer: EMH

The EMH was annoyed at what he perceived to be whiny and cranky attitudes from crew members whenever they needed medical attention. He decided to program himself with a 29-hour flu in an attempt to show them there was no need for that kind of attitude.

His assistant Kes changed the length of time by a couple of hours so he wouldn't know when the flu would end, just like a real person doesn't know the exact length they will have the flu. Once the time was up, the flu was gone and the EMH learned a lesson about how people behave when they have an illness. I'm sure many people would love it if their illnesses could be "deprogrammed" just like the EMH's illness!
2. In the "Scrubs" episode "My Musical", a guest character named Patti Miller started hearing everything in song. What was the cure for this illness?

Answer: surgery

Patti Miller fell unconscious in a park and when she woke up, everyone (including her) was singing. She is taken to Sacred Heart Hospital where she learns from Dr. Cox that she has a brain aneurysm. Fortunately, there is a cure and that cure is surgery. The doctors put her under anesthesia, operate on her, and when she awakens, Patti reveals that her illness has been cured.
Interestingly, according to a report that Mayo Clinic produced in 2001, hearing things sung is a real illness. Just like people can have visual hallucinations, they can also have auditory hallucinations.
3. Dr. Simon Tam was shot in the leg in the final aired episode of "Firefly" entitled "Objects in Space". Who was the person, although not a doctor, responsible for curing Simon's injury?

Answer: Zoe Washburne

A bounty hunter named Jubal Early was tasked with retrieving River Tam, known for her superhuman abilities. He demands Simon help him find River or something will happen to Kaylee. During their time together, Simon tries to stop Jubal Early but instead gets a bullet to the leg. Simon walks Zoe Washburne through the steps to heal his leg, so that he won't have to operate on himself. Zoe was successful and Simon's leg was returned to full strength.
4. "It's never lupus" ...except it was in the case of a magician named Flynn. He recovered from lupus thanks to a blood transfusion. This was a brief description of the episode "You Don't Want to Know" from which television show?

Answer: House

It was common in the television series "House" for Dr. House to say it was never lupus due to its rarity and its non defining symptoms. In "You Don't Want to Know" however, it really was lupus. Flynn recovered from his lupus when a blood transfusion of type A blood was given to him.

This was after it was discovered he had type A blood and the reason it appeared he had type AB blood was because his body was making extra antibodies.
5. Which of the following "Parks and Recreation" characters was lucky not to be infected in the aptly titled episode "Flu Season"?

Answer: Ron Swanson

April was infected and had to be taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital. While there, she mistreated the nurse Ann who had kissed April's boyfriend Andy. Chris also had the flu which surprised him since he tried to remain healthy but the fact that his immune system was not accustomed to fighting off the flu meant that he was stuck with the flu. Leslie also had the flu but tried to pretend it was nothing so she could continue working on her presentation to get 80 businesses to help with the Harvest Festival. Ann used her skills as a nurse to assist these three people in returning them to full health.
6. When Jack Bauer was infected by a biological weapon in "24", which of his family members provided him with the stem cells needed to begin his recovery?

Answer: his daughter Kim

During the seventh season of "24", Jack was infected with a biological weapon referred to as a prion variant. The container it came in was found to have a leak explaining why Jack was infected. A cure was discovered and it was to use stem cells from a compatible family member.

In Jack's case, his daughter Kim was that family member. Jack didn't want to include Kim in this, especially since there was no idea if it would work. Nevertheless, Kim was willing to take the risk and allowed the doctor to transfer some of her stem cells to her father.

The treatment was a success and Jack was cured, and even continued his work as he was recovering.
7. In "Mr. Monk Bumps His Head", Monk suffered from amnesia after getting hit over the head. How was he able to regain his memories?

Answer: recognizing his friends

Monk was looking for information on a six-fingered man who Monk was told was responsible for hiring the man who killed Monk's wife Trudy. One such contact said he had a photograph, but Monk realized the photograph was a forgery and he only wanted the money.

The man hit Monk on the head with a pipe causing him to get amnesia and put Monk on the back of a semitruck where Monk ended up in Wyoming. Despite this, Monk still had inklings of who he really was. He dreamt about a blonde woman (his wife Trudy), he still had a fear of heights, and he felt natural while doing detective work.

He regained his memories when his friends, Natalie Teeger, Randy Disher, and Leland Stottlemeyer, went to Wyoming to find him and Monk was able to recognize them and his relationship with each of them.

His amnesia was cured!
8. A viewing of the episode "Soul Purpose" of the show "Angel" would reveal that the titular character had a hallucination-causing parasite attached to him. Who killed the parasite?

Answer: Spike

Eve placed a parasite on Angel to cast doubts on his higher purpose, which Angel started doubting since the prior episode when Spike physically overcame Angel in a fight. This parasite caused dream hallucinations that continued to give Angel doubt and would eventually leave Angel in a vegetative state had the illness not been cured.

However, Spike (with some help from Lindsey who was working with Eve) learned of this and killed the parasite healing Angel from the illness inflicted on him by the parasite. Angel was cured and it was also the first step in Angel learning his purpose!
9. Balki Bartokomous gave his cousin Larry a cure for which illness in the "Perfect Strangers" episode "Ladies and Germs"?

Answer: cold

Larry came down with a cold after visiting his boss Donald Twinkacetti at a hospital. Unfortunately, Larry also had a date so he tired to figure a way to get over his illness. Balki had a cure, and like many of his other ideas, involved something to do with his home country of Mypos.

The contents of the cure was not revealed, but thanks to Balki, Larry was cured of his cold. (He did take more than needed, resulting in being asleep for three days, but unfortunately, this overdose did not cause any other problems!)
10. Which incarnation of the Doctor in "Doctor Who" had his hand cut off by the Sycorax leader?

Answer: Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)

The Tenth Doctor, in his debut story "The Christmas Invasion", had completed another regeneration. While recovering from his regeneration, the Sycorax enacted their plan to enslave the human race and claim Earth as their own. The Doctor stopped it and challenged the Sycorax leader to a sword fight where the leader cut off the Tenth Doctor's hand.

However, being a Time Lord and with it being shortly after his regeneration, the Doctor simply grew a new hand. Many people would like it if their injuries could be healed as quickly and as painlessly as the Doctor's!
