Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these does Ilonka find in Julia Jayne's patient file?

Answer: Charcoal drawings

Ilonka explains to Kevin what she saw in the hallway-- it was all different from the furniture to the paintings to the light fixtures. It was like going back in time and the woman she saw...it all seemed so weird. Kevin rationalizes that it must be the meds, but Ilonka insists she's not crazy.

Heading to her room, Ilonka pores through Julia Jayne's patient file and comes across charcoal drawings amongst the formal paperwork and x-rays, some of which depict a shrouded figure standing beneath an old tree marked with a symbol like the one she saw in the woods. One of the drawings is marked with the numbers 292-13.

A procession of cloaked fingers, each person bearing a candle and each tattooed with an hourglass on the inside of their wrist, emerges from the library. Ilonka, out of her room, follows behind them at a distance as they make their way to the elevator, but when she steps on a creaky floorboard, she's caught and attacked by the darkness. It turns out to be a dream, however, and when she awakens, it's morning.
2. Which patient does not anticipate any guests for Family Day?

Answer: Anya

Anya is already awake and eating breakfast when Ilonka rises from her nightmare. Ilonka, seizing the opportunity while she still has the patient file splayed out on her bed, asks Anya if she knows the symbol or the number she keeps stumbling upon, but Anya doesn't seem to care. Anya apologizes a bit to explain she's typically cranky on Family Day; everyone else has family stop by to check in, but she doesn't have a plus-one. It's why Ilonka invites her down to meet Tim; she's told him, already, that Anya's the toughest person she's ever met.

Family Day takes place in the dining hall. While Natsuki receives pictures of her father-- important ones-- from her mother, Amesh talks to his aunt and uncle about his parents' immigration since the clock is ticking on their return to America. Spence is disappointed that his mother won't visit alongside his father; he gets awkward reasons as to why she won't show up. Kevin, meanwhile, struggles with his mother's insistence that his brother should carry on his legacy. It's part of why he flags down Ilonka as she comes into the room-- to get out of that chat. Ilonka is introduced to Kevin's mother and brother, Samantha and Morgan, but he never really lets on that Katherine is his girlfriend until it's too late to avoid awkwardness.
3. Instead of having family visit, Cheri receives a care package including a giant teddy bear and a box of which of these?

Answer: Soaps

Tim arrives at Family Day late and Ilonka finds him in Brightcliffe's lobby talking to Anya, who was kind enough to escort him in (and to Ilonka's surprise, Tim finds Anya hilarious). She takes Tim and Anya to her favourite place on the grounds, the library, and picks their brains a bit with the number from the pictures-- 292.13. Tim suggests it might be latitude or longitude, but Ilonka knows the numbers for those can't go that high. He worries she might be getting bothered by something too small, but Anya explains how time feels like it can go slower inside Brightcliffe. It's okay though, since they take care of each other.

Mark stops by Cheri's room with a pile of gifts from her parents which, judging by the contents of the box of soaps she's received, implies her mother is in Italy working on a movie. Mark apologizes that no one's there for her on Family Day, but she shouldn't feel bad joining the others. She's family to them.

Before long, Family Day ends and the patients can only watch as the cars leave the property.
4. When Natsuki visits Tristan's room, she finds which of these has happened?

Answer: Tristan has passed away

After her mother leaves, Natsuki heads to Tristan's room and buzzes on the intercom to check in and keep reading her story. When she gets no response, she lets herself into his room and finds Tristan unmoving in bed. Though most believe her to be getting better, she would pass away on Family Day. Later, when Dr. Stanton and Mark bring her to the elevator, Natsuki remarks that she was looking forward to having her roommate back.

As Tristan's room is cleaned, emptied, and flipped over for whoever takes it next, Natsuki asks if everything is being washed or if everything is brand new. The orderly comments that they come into this world with nothing and they leave with nothing, and she should not feel afraid of what must be done as Tristan, having passed on, will feel no pain in death.
5. Ilonka claims that which of these is pushing her to look deeper into the mysterious number and symbols in Julia Jayne's file?

Answer: A whisper in her mind

Kevin visits Ilonka in her room to find her reading over the Julia Jayne file. He apologizes for dismissing what she saw the previous night while she apologizes for mistaking his girlfriend for a sister. Kevin unloads a bit of his grief, explaining that his family's great, but his mother has had a lot of issues with her drinking as of late. They all seem to have a lot to say about their perfect son, student, and boyfriend, Kevin. Things seem to have changed since he came to Brightcliffe.

Kevin asks about the Julia Jayne file and Ilonka says there isn't too much in the file save for the art therapy results. The number and the symbol are still at the top of her mind, and it's because there's a little voice in her head, almost like a whisper of intuition, is kicking her attention towards it into overdrive. Whatever these voices are, they've been whispering loud since she came to Brightcliffe and she needs to follow them. It doesn't mean she has to listen, Kevin says, even if it's a distraction from everything.
6. Does the Midnight Club declare Natsuki's believed sighting to be a veritable sign from the other side, per their pact?

Answer: No

In the evening after Family Day, Natsuki passes by Tristan's old room and catches something out of the corner of her eye-- someone sitting up in Tristan's old bed. When she turns back to check the bedding, there's no one there and everything is untouched. She tells the others when they head to the library for their meeting of the Midnight Club but most of them agree that it's not the sign from the other side that they all would have expected, so the supposed sighting doesn't count for their pact. Anya, specifically, claims that if she could break through the veil, she would make it certain that her communication is tangible.

As the club puts the alleged sighting discussion to rest, it's Kevin who takes the story-teller's seat this time. After the credo, he dives in.
7. Kevin's story, 'The Wicked Heart', is about a boy named Dusty. What's true about Dusty?

Answer: He goes to high school

Kevin begins his story talking about Dusty Shane, a kid he describes as 'perfectly crazy'. A student at Roosevelt High School, he's a senior with good grades, but generally he flies under the radar. Between fifth and sixth period one day he overhears Nancy, a girl at her locker, telling her friend that her parents are going to be in Vegas. Nancy is looking forward to a night alone in front of the TV. Dusty uses this knowledge to plot.

Nobody knows that Dusty lives at home, alone, with his mother. A few years ago, her mind started to go, but she's always listening. That night, Dusty drives across town and visits Nancy's place, sneaking into her house through a back window, heading up the stairs, and slipping into her bedroom. Taking a hammer in one hand and a towel in the other, he listens to the voices as they whisper to him. Nancy barely opens her eyes before he covers her face with the towel and takes a few swings.

Dusty packs her glasses into his bag, wraps her into garbage bags, and leaves a calling card on her nightstand-- a white card with a smiley face.

Spencer and Amesh remind Kevin that he told a serial killer story last month as well and the killer painted a smiley face at the crime scene in blood. So he changes the story-- it's not a smiley face, it's a shape like an hourglass with the top half filled in.
8. Kevin explains, regarding his story, that Hell isn't lava and brimstone. It's what else, instead?

Answer: Knowing stares

Dusty drives his car down an old, abandoned road and he takes the body on foot from there, dropping it in a cave and digging through the soil to put it next to the other bodies. It wasn't the first time he took a life and it won't be the last. When he returns home he finds his mother sitting on the couch. He tells her that he had a good night; he hopes he made her proud, but he wants her and the voices to leave him alone. As he goes to bed, he says good night to the spectres watching him, screaming soundlessly for help. He tells them that no one can hear them and no one ever will.

The new ghosts always scream and cry a lot, but the older ones figure it out. They stop screaming and simply stare. Hell, Kevin explains, isn't lava or brimstone, but knowing stares of people who have you figured out.

The week after Nancy's disappearance, her friends wonder after her. Dusty doesn't think much of it and tells her friend, Sheila, that she might be sick. It gives the two of them a chance to introduce themselves to one another. It's weird, she says, that she never talked to him before.

At the table in the library, Amesh jokes that Sheila shouldn't fall for the broody guy trick; she's just going to get herself caught in the trap. Sandra says she's not thinking with her brain. Kevin reassures them, it's just because a lot of people find Dusty charming. It's a bit of a problem.
9. In 'The Wicked Heart', Kevin's story, detectives ask Sheila if she knows anything about which of these?

Answer: Internet chat rooms

Sheila and Dusty decide to go on a date together and, as they drive up to the north side of town, Sheila makes a detour, intending to stop by Nancy's place to check in on her in case, as Dusty says, she's likely sick. They make it to the house and ring the doorbell but Nancy doesn't-- she can't-- answer, even though she screams silently and only Dusty can see her. Sheila finds a hide-a-key and they let themselves inside to find no sign of anyone in the house, and it's because of this that Sheila decides to call the police. It doesn't feel right, she explains.

The police show up and they investigate the house, finding the symbol on the card on her nightstand. The attention to this is what worries Sheila most, and the detective sidesteps bringing up the possibility of it being connected to anything. Dusty heads home, claiming he has to get back to his sick mother, and he misses the detective asking about online chat rooms.

It's to the chat room, not coincidentally, that Dusty heads to when he returns to his computer, using it to talk with other girls. He packs his clothes and the murder weapon into a bag moments before there's a knock on his front door and he opens it to find Sheila. She explains that she doesn't think Nancy is a missing person, but a murder victim-- the detective seemed to be holding the concern up against other evidence.

Dusty tries to rationalize a fake truth for Sheila, but she asks for his help in solving the mystery.

But Kevin leaves that part of the story to be continued, much to the frustration of the Midnight Club. They angrily leave the library and head to bed.
10. Ilonka remembers where she last saw the hourglass symbol in Brightcliffe, but where was it?

Answer: In the elevator

As the others leave for bed without a conclusion to Kevin's story, Ilonka stays back and confronts him for using her symbol. Everyone has to pull from somewhere though. What Ilonka does credit Kevin for, however, is giving her the reminder she needs, allowing her to remember, through his talk of Hell and descent, that she last saw the hourglass symbol on the control panel of Brightcliffe's elevator.

When Ilonka and Kevin check the elevator they find that, sure enough, there's a secret button utilizing the symbol, but when it's pressed it doesn't do anything. Reasoning that there's a fail-safe for it, in case it's accidentally hit, Ilonka brings them to the basement instead, letting them down to the morgue.

But the fail-safe goes further than that. Pressing the hourglass button and the basement button at the same time, they discover that there's another floor below basement level, and when the elevator brings them down to it, they let themselves out of the car to find a massive chamber. Kevin stays in the elevator, but Ilonka walks out, lighting matches to guide her way to the centre of the room. She finds the hourglass carved into the floor, but just as she does, the elevator starts to ascend, leaving her in the dark.

As Kevin tries to get the elevator to go back down, Ilonka lights one more match to help her see, and it's in that light that she spies the woman she saw in the hall standing across the room, watching her.
