Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Continuing 'The Wicked Heart', Kevin resumes his story of Dusty. When he kills Harmony, what does he encounter?

Answer: A witness

Dusty continues his killing spree, arriving at another girl's house to kill her while she's sleeping. The ghosts of the other girls he's killed continue to scream, soundlessly, everywhere he goes. As he wraps the newest body into a garbage bag and leaves his calling card, he's caught by the girl's younger brother as he walks into the room to determine the cause of commotion. What results is a fight where Dusty has no choice but to put an end to the kid, bringing the hammer down to save himself.

Kevin acknowledges to the others around the table that Dusty never wants to kill people, but he feels he has to. He didn't want to kill the most recent girl, Harmony, either, but he got his orders, awakening in the middle of the night to receive the newest name.
2. In Kevin's story, Dusty is asked by detectives as to whether or not he uses what chat board website?

Answer: Einstein

While Dusty continues his serial murders, Sheila speaks to the detective on the case suggesting that the killer must be a teenager, perhaps even one who goes to Roosevelt High School. The problem, as she finds, is that the case is more complicated than it seems. The detective tells her that these murders have persisted for a long while-- more than forty years, all with the same MO-- so her theory is already shaky. She's advised to stay out of it; the detectives will solve it and she doesn't need to worry.

At school, Sheila confides in Dusty that the police told her off but their theory still makes sense. She heads out to practice, but promises him a date in the evening-- a real one. As he heads to class, however, he's intercepted by the detective and asked if he uses Einstein, the online chat room theorized to be used by the killer. He has to admit he uses it; everyone does. But soon the questions start to get harder to answer, like when she asks him what his username is.

That night, Dusty takes Sheila out on a date, bringing his car out to the make-out spot on the north side of town. She thanks him, once again, for all the help, but he cracks a bit and suggests she doesn't really want to be there with him. She deserves better. But he kisses her anyway, even with the screaming girl outside the window.

That night, he hears the whisper, and it tells him that Sheila is next.

Kevin leaves the conclusion of his story for another time, however. If the Midnight Club wants to hear it, they've gotta stay alive.
3. In Ilonka's story, 'Witch', Imani and her mother share what magical power?

Answer: Healing

Though the Midnight Club starts to get up from their seats, Ilonka chimes in and says that she also has a story to tell if they're still up for it, and with that, they dive into a double story night. Ilonka warns the group that this story is a bit weird and a bit unfinished, but it's about magic and love and family and fate. She calls it 'Witch'.

Imani was a witch, Ilonka begins. In fact, all the women in Imani's family were witches as far back as anyone could remember. Imani and her mother are healers, but the story starts with their second ability: scrying. At the park one day, Imani's mother teaches her to scry on the surface of a pond, allowing her to see into the future. What she discovers quickly is that no matter what she does, the world will try to snap back into its proper course. There is no changing the future...at least not permanently. The universe is stubborn. Her mother asks her to promise one thing though, and that's never to scry at night.

Imani walks her mother back to work in the emergency room of hospital and as they arrive, she's already put to work. Though she sends Imani away, Imani stays back to watch her mother in the OR. Unfortunately, the girl on the table dies, but Imani's mother sends the nurses out of the room to work her magic, devoting her powers to bring the girl back to life at great personal strain. Though the girl survives, Imani's mother does not as a result.
4. Who of these gets shot when they head into the liquor store seen in Imani's vision (despite her warning)?

Answer: Scottie

One night, after the funeral, when the rest of Imani's family leaves town, she takes her mother's ashes and spreads them in the pond at the park. Seeking answers as to why her mother died performing her magic and why she would take such a risk if there was any danger, she forgets her mother's warning about scrying in the pool at night...but it's too late. When she gazes into the water she sees an incredible vision of a boy she's never met but believes she could fall in love with, and in the vision she witnesses him getting shot and killed.

As the vision in the water fades away, a car pulls up and Imani's friends beckon for her to come along for a ride. The four of them head along and her friends tell her all about a guy that they've shown her picture to; they've set her up to hang out with him. She's hesitant, but when they stop by his place, it turns out to be the boy from the scrying pool-- Ben.

They hit it off quickly and stop off to pick up drinks from a liquor store, but Imani gets a bad feeling, recognizing the building as the one from her vision. She stops Ben from going in, but her friend, Scottie, goes in instead. It's her who gets shot.
5. Is Ilonka able to finish her 'Witch' story for the Midnight Club?

Answer: No

After the robbery at the liquor store, Scottie ends up in the emergency room but Imani and her friends aren't allowed to go in and see her on account of her vitals not being stable. The others ask Imani how she knew not to go into the liquor store, but she can't explain. She knows, however, that she did what her mother told her not to do, and the universe tried to right itself.

As the days go by, Scottie's condition worsens and Imani, hitting it off with Ben, is racked with guilt for having committed her friend to her fate by intervening in the natural order. She still goes on a date with Ben, though. And when they stop off at a gas station she arrives to pay at the register at the worst time. As she senses the universe snapping back like a rubber band, a robber points the gun at her. She manages to take a swing and avoid getting shot, but the firearm points directly at Ben, standing in the doorway, and it goes off.

As Ilonka reaches the climax of her story, a thud is heard at the table and the Midnight Club turns to find Anya collapsed at her seat. She's alive, but unwell. They have no choice but to call for help.
6. At group therapy, Ilonka balks at the idea of succumbing to death in what way?

Answer: Gently

The morning after Anya's collapse, the club heads to group therapy and Dr. Stanton informs them that it's sepsis-- an extreme reaction to infection as her body is damaging its own tissue.

The session is a solemn one with the group in worried contemplation. Natsuki is the one who suggests that death feels too familiar now and she agrees with the others that she hopes Anya passes gently, but at the word 'gentle', Ilonka takes a stand. Death, she says, is a sentence and she's angry that their illnesses have such a grip on them that they fear the worst. She's waiting on her cancer with a molotov and a machete, and if death comes for Anya, she hopes she rips into it and doesn't stop. If there's a way to save everyone, she doesn't care what it costs; she'd burn the world down.

Dr. Stanton speaks to Ilonka and the others calmly when she says that it is not up to them. They do not make the rules and they do not get to change the ultimate outcome. Even if someone finds a loophole or a shortcut, people can get hurt or so obsessed that they ruin their lives. If Ilonka spends all her time fighting and doesn't get a chance to say goodbye, then she may face a world of pain and regret.

When Ilonka joins Dr. Stanton in the recovery room for a visit with Anya, she takes a seat and speaks to her roommate while she sleeps. She says thank you to her for arguing with her and calling her out because it gave her the sister she needed. As she gives Anya a kiss, Anya awakens and whispers that she wants to live.

When Ilonka tells Dr. Stanton, it's good news, but she's reminded that they're not fighting gravity, only pushing for a softer landing.
7. Shasta has an hourglass tattoo, but does she claim to be a member of the Paragon?

Answer: No

Frustrated with Dr. Stanton's continued reassurance that Brightcliffe's aim is to help patients die with peace and dignity instead of fighting their illnesses, Ilonka grabs her books and heads out into the woods, hiking out to the spring and filling her jars with water.

Shasta finds her there, having seen her on the monitors, and realizes the pain in Ilonka's eyes. The two discuss the grief of seeing a friend slowly pass and Shasta asks why Ilonka came to the woods. The reason is simple; she has the books from Brightcliffe indicating that the property is special. If there's any chance to save Anya, it could be in the books.

Shasta tells Ilonka that it's not crazy. There are a lot of things out in the world and a lot of ideas and a lot of actions taken that defy gravity. The world went crazy a long time ago and there are people who can see through it. There's a lot in the books she has and a lot in nature for them. Shasta tells her that she will need just under a gallon of spring water and she'll need to talk about the five sisters. She asks how many women are at Brightcliffe other than herself and Anya.

That's when Ilonka spots the hourglass tattoo on Shasta's wrist. With Cheri, Natsuki, Sandra, and the two of them, it's too much of a coincidence to bear; there's five of them. What Shasta knows is older than the Paragon, and if she wants to save Anya, she'll have to do exactly what she's told. She says this as she slices her hand with a sharp dagger.
8. Who has a talk with Sandra, convincing her to be present for the ritual even if she doesn't believe in it?

Answer: Natsuki

When Ilonka returns to Brightcliffe she tells the others of what she's learned and they express obvious hesitation. What she replies, however, is that it's no crazier than anything else they've tried. Further, they know that some have left Brightcliffe cured, and these rituals date back to the ancient world. There's no reason not to attempt it. She wants to try it that very evening.

Ilonka reminds the others that Anya would kick anyone in the teeth to try anything and keep her alive. Kevin sides with her, realizing that as crazy as the idea is, it costs them nothing but time to try. Soon, the others start to agree with the plan. Natsuki worries that the shadows others have seen might be connected with her spate of bad dreams; Amesh says that he wants angels-- if they exist-- on their side; Cheri finds it all reasonable anyways. Sandra is the only one to call the ritual out as false idolatry; if they go around calling wrong numbers, she suggests, something bad will pick up. She's the only one to say she's out.

Later in the day, Natsuki stops by Sandra's room for a chat and finds her praying. She tells Sandra that she admires her for standing by her faith, but she wonders if she feels lonely. The others are the closest thing to family they have in Brightcliffe, and Natsuki suggests that Sandra doesn't need to believe in the ritual, she just needs to show up.
9. When Ilonka and Anya descend into the ritual chamber, they find a message written for them on the ground. What does it say?

Answer: DONT

As night falls at Brightcliffe, Ilonka has a terrifying dream that she stands in the centre of the ritual chamber as Sandra arrives, but as she tries to speak, all of her sounds are muted. As figures start to rise from the robes on the ground, she screams silently and she's overtaken by the cultists.

Ilonka awakens from the nightmare and heads to the recovery room to collect Anya for the jailbreak, placing her in a wheelchair and bringing her to the basement chamber for the ritual. The others follow close behind. As they wheel into the space, Ilonka says she believes she knows how to save her, but a quick swing of the flashlight shows something unnerving-- blankets, placed on the ground to form the word 'DON'T'. She breaks them apart as the others arrive.

Everyone dons their robes, lights the fire, and takes a seat. They start by invoking the names of the five sisters, but they're interrupted when the elevator starts to ascend, trapping them in the chamber. With no way out, they're relieved when it turns out to be Sandra, rejoining the others despite her reluctance.
10. Who is the only member of the Midnight Club who doesn't provide a sacrifice during the ritual?

Answer: Anya

The ritual resumes and the club calls out the names of the five sisters before revealing the items they've brought as sacrifices, placing them into the fire before using the knife to cut their hands and spread the blood on the flames. Taking her thumb, Ilonka places a mark on Anya's forehead. And the others continue around the circle, discarding items of great love and meaning to them, sacrificing in kind for their true family.

When all seven of the others finish their turn in the circle, Ilonka opens a jar and places Shasta's blood into the fire, indicating the blood of five sisters and three brothers. As Ilonka places the last thumbprint on Anya's face she grabs the basin of spring water and warns that it will be cold before it's poured over her.

To end the ritual, the Midnight Club repeats the incantation as they hold hands. Anya begs, under her breath, for just a little more time, but as she looks up to the ceiling she sees the darkness waiting there, reaching down from above, and she shuts her eyes.
