Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Heide Knights have two weapons they can potentially drop as loot when defeated, the Heide Knight Sword and Heide Knight Spear. Uniquely, these weapons deal split elemental damage. Apart from just physical, what type of damage do these weapons deal?

Answer: Lightning

This will be the first opportunity the player has had to acquire weapons which deal split damage. As it happens, the two bosses of Heide's Tower of Flame, as well as both early game bosses in the Forest of Fallen Giants are weak to Lightning. A player wanting an early game boost would thereby benefit from farming the Heide Knights.
2. Old Knights can drop the player their pieces of equipment and weapons as potential loot. Each piece of gear, weapon and armor, mentions "Sometimes, just as a thing falls to pieces, it unleashes its last flash of great power..." Which of the following is true about Old Knight equipment?

Answer: All of these

Old Knight gear is a recycled concept of Crystal weapons from "Dark Souls 1". In that game, Crystal weapons were way more powerful than anything else that could be acquired at the time, but they had low durability and were gone forever when they broke. Old Knight gear doesn't crumble away into nothing, but it's extremely poor durability makes it best suited for abbreviated use. Conserving it for boss fights would be a great idea.
3. There are two Old Knights guarding levers attached to switches. When pulled, what do these levers do?

Answer: Raise the platform for a boss fight

The Dragonrider is fought atop a circular platform without much room to move without falling off. These switches aren't mandatory, but when pulled, they can give the player more room to work with. Since the Dragonrider can also be driven to fall off the edge, however, this isn't strictly advantageous and depends on the player's strategy/playstyle.
4. Masterless Glencour and Bashful Ray are possible NPC summons to help fight either of this map's two bosses. Uniquely however, on New Game Plus and beyond, a third NPC can now be summoned. Who is this?

Answer: Devotee Scarlett

Scarlett can be summoned for Dragonrider, but since she is tied to Old Dragonslayer, her summon sign will not appear if he has already been defeated.
5. A mini boss represents the last hurdle to climb before the player can access the Cathedral of Blue. Who is this mini boss?

Answer: Guardian Dragon

This is definitely the most dangerous part about this entire map, even counting the bosses themselves. In order to approach the dragon, the player must cross a narrow bridge that doesn't have any railings on its side. They can easily be knocked off this bridge, and because it's so narrow, they cannot dodge the dragon if it decides to breathe fire this direction.

Moreover, the dragon can fly up and breathe fire downward which can also checkmate the player depending on their position.
6. Old Dragonslayer is a side, optional boss of this area. Some fan service was rendered here, as he wears the same exact armor as an iconic boss from "Dark Souls 1." What boss does Old Dragonslayer resemble?

Answer: Dragonslayer Ornstein

The armor Old Dragonslayer wears is the exact same as Ornstein's, though it does undergo a pallet swap, shifting from Ornstein's gold into a black and grey contrast. The Old Dragonslayer's moveset is almost entirely composed of moves Ornstein used, making the resemblance that much more spitting image.
7. Once Old Dragonslayer has been slain, there lies some excellent loot behind him in a couple treasure chests. A powerful greatshield is the highlight, but which one?

Answer: Tower Shield

This greatshield is about as simple as it gets- customary 100% physical absorption, high stability and very heavy. It's elemental absorptions are a touch on the weaker side, but considering how early on in the playthrough the player will be, this is to be expected. Even with that, for its well rounded stats and reasonable 30 requirement for Strength, this is an excellent early game tool for greatshield users.
8. As one last reward for defeating Old Dragonslayer, the player can now join a covenant. What covenant is this?

Answer: Blue Sentinels

This is a very heavy PvP oriented covenant, the first of its kind the player will have access to. Blue Knight Targray won't allow the player to join, however, unless they have a Token of Fidelity in their possession. This can either be picked up as loot in The Gutter or will be a reward if the player helps a Way of Blue or Blue Sentinel defeat a boss.
9. Just before the mainline boss fight door, there is a treasure chest on a floating platform almost completely detached from the rest of the map. What is in this chest?

Answer: Binding Ring

The Ring of Binding removes up to 20% of a maximum HP penalty for player hollowing. This means they won't lose any maximum HP until they die three times without using a Human Effigy, and their maximum HP cannot go any lower than 70%, a minimum which is 50% without this ring.

This ring can be extremely useful for newer players. It greatly helps to ease the punishment for death, which is clearly possible on someone's first playthrough and should be expected. Given that there is a limit to how many Human Effigies can be looted naturally or purchased, this ring can help the player ideally avoid completely depleting this stock.
10. Dragonrider is the main boss of this map. In order to achieve an ending and beat the entire game, is this a required boss?

Answer: No

Because the Shrine of Winter can be accessed at one million soul memory, no boss up until Drangleic Castle is strictly mandatory with the exception of The Last Giant.

Compared to Old Dragonslayer, Dragonrider hits noticeably harder and is quite a bit larger. However, he is much, much slower, has less variety to his moveset and has less HP, generally making him much easier to defeat.
11. Dragonrider's Soul can be converted into one of a game-high four different items. One of them is his halberd. This is predictably no ordinary halberd, as the Dragonrider Halberd deals split elemental damage. Apart from physical, what element is this weapon imbued with?

Answer: Magic

This is the only halberd in the game that innately deals Magic damage. This would make the weapon unique, were it not for the bizarre notion that a simple Halberd infused with a Magic stone happens to outperform the Dragonrider Halberd in every way, with the exception of using it against the Magic-weak boss Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin.

The Dragonrider Halberd is largely Magic focused, eschewing a lot of physical prowess. This unfortunately causes its performance to be quite sub par.
12. The Dragonrider Greatshield, acquired via conversion of the Dragonrider Soul, draws comparisons to the Tower Shield and Pursuer Greatshield, two other early game Greatshields. What element does it absorb better than they do?

Answer: Magic

The Pursuer Shield outdoes it in absorbing Dark, Tower Shield has a slight upper hand in Fire, but the Dragonrider Greatshield is noticeably superior to them at taking Magic damage. It has higher stability than the former with better all around absorptions than the latter.

The debate on which is better is almost pointless, as they're all relatively on par with one another, they're all excellent choices, so you could just pick whichever looks coolest and get away with it.
13. If you wanted a ranged option faster than a Greatbow that dealt more damage than a typical shortbow, using your Dragonrider Soul on this weapon might be a good idea. What weapon is it?

Answer: Dragonrider Bow

This Bow is a middle ground between short bows and great bows. It has the range of a Greatbow, the fire speed and reload speed of a Greatbow, damage which is a bit inferior to Greatbows, weight which is slightly heavier than short bows, but it can be used to fire arrows, not great arrows. This colossal waste of space should be left to rot in Straid of Olaphis' shop.
14. If you enjoy unique weapons, this weapon, which the Dragonriders in this game don't even use for some reason, is one of four options obtained via its boss soul. What weapon is this?

Answer: Twinblade

The Dragonrider Twinblade is a fine weapon, but it remains a weird choice for this soul since, again, none of the Dragonriders actually use it. Combine that with the notion that four different items are attached to this one soul, and it would probably have been a better idea to give the twin blade to a different boss soul.
15. Unlike his fellow boss-in-arms, Old Dragonslayer only has one item which can be obtained using his soul- and it's a timeless classic, yanked right over from "Dark Souls 1" just like the boss himself. What weapon is this?

Answer: Dragonslayer Spear

Just like it's obvious inspiration, this weapon deals split Physical/Lightning damage. This aspect of it is perhaps a bit odd since, unlike Ornstein, Old Dragonslayer uses Dark attacks instead of Lightning.
