Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gustave is the lead protagonist for Act 1. Which of these locations does he not visit?

Answer: The Monolith

Gustave is the commander of Expedition 33, and its his firm leadership that guides the group to the Continent. When the Expedition is ambushed by Renoir on the beaches near Spring Meadows, he's one of the few survivors, managing to escape the slaughter with the help of his team, and he sets out to find his adopted sister, Maelle, at all costs.

Gustave is the lead character through the story's first act, but he's one of the few party members of the game not to make it to the Monolith. In fact, he doesn't make it further than the Stone Wave Cliffs; his adventure concludes when Renoir kills him after the Lampmaster boss battle at which point Verso becomes the main protagonist of Act 2.

Expedition 33 buries him in a quiet glade after the Ancient Bridge in the Forgotten Battleground.
2. Sophie experiences the Gommage at the start of the story. What was her age?

Answer: 34

For the most part, Sophie is only really encountered in the story's prologue, appearing on the day of the Expedition Exposition and the day of her Gommage. Formerly in a relationship with Gustave, her final day is spent saying her goodbyes to the people in her short life before she waits at the end of the old harbour for the Paintress to change the number on the monolith, dropping it from 34 to 33 and erasing anyone of a higher age.

The following day is when Expedition 33, comprised (mostly) of 33-year-old explorers, heads out for another hopeful attempt at saving anyone left.
3. Lune's fight mechanic involves casting magic produced by which of these, which she accumulates and consumes throughout battle?

Answer: Stains

The earliest party member that you can collect once Gustave finds her in the Spring Meadows, Lune is a rational-minded, curious researcher who uses innate magic attacks to fight foes in battle, and to do this she casts her spells (with AP) and accumulates up to four Stains, elemental energies that she can use and spend with subsequent casts to increase their capabilities. By this, good combos and round-planning can lead to increased success and strength. Lune can accumulate fire, ice, lightning, earth, and light stains.
4. As the story develops, it's later revealed that Maelle is a reincarnation of which person?

Answer: Alicia

Although Maelle appears at the start of the game, joining Expedition 33 as a citizen of Lumière, it will later be determined that she's the reincarnation of Alicia Dessendre, who entered the Canvas on her sister's insistence to assist their father, Renoir. Her mother, Aline, as the Paintress, inadvertently used her Chroma to recreate Alicia as Maelle, birthing her into the world without knowledge of her past or motivations (though Maelle always felt an urge to leave Lumière behind).

Maelle finds out the truth shortly after the Paintress is expelled from the Canvas, and in the final act of the story, she fights back against her father, Renoir, in an attempt to retain the world that her mother created in an act of grief. The final choice of the game falls to you to determine if Maelle should remain in the Canvas or if Verso should aid in its destruction, sending her back to the real world like Aline and Renoir before her.
5. Noco claims to want to be the greatest of all time, but in what role?

Answer: Merchant

First met in Flowing Waters (at his house), Noco is a small gestral who seems to be quite well-connected. Bringing the Expedition through Flowing Waters and into the Ancient Sanctuary, it's he who vouches for the group as they reach Gestral Village, and he reunites with them later on at Monoco's Station, evidently having travelled with Verso and Monoco in the past.

Noco reiterates, often, that he wants to be a successful merchant who sells the rarest of items, and it's why he joins the Expedition in earnest in Act 2 (even though Verso and Monoco believe he's the best Searcher on the Continent). The dream comes to an end in Old Lumière when he's killed in the fight against Renoir, though it is possible to resurrect him if you develop your relationships at camp.
6. Sciel, as her story unfolds, reveals that she was which of the following?

Answer: Married

Sciel, one of the only survivors of Expedition 33, proves to be resilient but not without her own flaws. A character who appears to be able to let tragic events roll off her back with relative ease, it appears to be a personality trait built up by a dark past that she really only lets unfold if Verso lets her feel at ease. Deep into their growing relationship, she'll reveal that after the passing of her husband, Pierre, she attempted to drown herself in the sea.

She survived, but as she was pregnant at the time, her unborn child did not.
7. Which of these is not one of Esquie's prized rocks?

Answer: Storrie

Esquie, a creation of Verso's own within the Canvas, appears to be able to take on unique abilities when he has his prized rocks in his possession, and these tend to appear at important points in the story.

Florrie is the first-- he'll get her from the Stone Wave Cliffs and it'll allow the Expedition to swim around in the sea. Dorrie comes second, in Old Lumière, and it will let him break through the coral reefs impeding the routes around the islands. Soarrie, which was in Verso's possession the whole time, is given over during the fight against the Paintress, allowing Esquie to fly. The fourth and final stone is found when Verso raises Esquie's relationship rank enough; it's Urrie, and it allows Esquie to dive into the water to collect things in the sea.
8. Verso uses the same weapons as Gustave. Does he use the same skills as well?

Answer: No

When Gustave dies and Verso joins the Expedition in Act 2, there are some similarities between the two leaders, chief amongst them being the fact that they make use of the same melee weapons and Lumina Points. This being said, while Gustave builds up his Lumina Converter with successful hits to allow himself to Overcharge, Verso builds up his strikes to increase his Rank in battle, increasing his strength substantially and unlocking better skills with his battle prowess. Rank increases with each hit, but decreases when Verso takes damage.

Although at the point where Gustave is lost, it's likely that players will build him up and invest in him, being able to transition that progress to Verso is a bit of a relief, and the similarities between the two playstyles may make the tragic event a bit easier to take, at least from a functionality standpoint.
9. Monoco can obtain new skills by collecting which of these from his enemies?

Answer: Feet

Monoco is an odd gestral with a long history of having travelled with Verso through the Continent over the past sixty-plus years, and when he's finally met at Monoco's Station in Act 2, he reluctantly joins as the Expedition's final member.

He has quite the unique approach to fighting. Firstly, Monoco uses a Bestial Wheel to determine his capabilities round-to-round. When the wheel lands on a certain mask, that mask becomes his leading attribute, and all skills utilizing it are empowered.

Secondly, if Monoco is in your party for any fight, completion of a battle will allow him to collect the feet of fallen nevrons, adding them to his collection and giving him a skill that befits the enemy. If any given skill is equipped, he'll transform into that foe during battle and use their powers as his own. Monoco can have forty-seven individual skills by the game's end.
10. Which of these best-describes the real Renoir Dessendre's aim?

Answer: To stop the Paintress and destroy the canvas

Renoir appears early in the Expedition as a primary antagonist, killing much of Expedition 33 and, then, Gustave when the party reaches the Stone Wave Cliffs. Although Renoir's motivation, as Verso later boils it down, is to protect the Paintress to ensure that he retains his immortality at all costs, the reality is actually significantly more nuanced and complex.

The Expedition will fight and destroy Renoir in the Monolith with the help of the Curator, but it will be determined that this version of Renoir is nothing more than a facsimile created by Aline Dessendre, the Paintress, to reflect her husband's intent. The real Renoir, the Curator the whole time, has been working to free his wife from the Canvas so that he can destroy it altogether, sparing his family of their aversion towards overcoming the grieving process in the wake of Verso's (the real Verso's) death.

The final battle against the real Renoir will take place in Lumière, and once defeated, he'll leave it to Maelle to determine if she'll leave the Canvas as neither he nor Aline will return.
