Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these sports did not appear in "Wii Sports", but its sequel, "Wii Sports Resort", instead?

Answer: Frisbee

Releasing alongside the Wii console upon its release in November 2006 (worldwide except in Japan), "Wii Sports" quickly rose through the bestseller charts to become one of the top-selling and top played games of all time, showcasing the Wii's new motion-sensing remote controller in five easy-to-understand sports demos that took full advantage of what the console had to offer. Players could partake in tennis, baseball, wrestling, golf, and bowling, all of which would be elaborated on in later games to show up on the console in its lengthy and prosperous life cycle.

The game was followed up by a sequel, "Wii Sports Resort", in 2009, and this one leveraged the new Wii MotionPlus functionality, improving the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote as players took on frisbee, frisbee golf, swordplay, archery, table tennis, and others. Naturally, it too was a bestseller.
2. "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" was the first "Mario" platformer to feature cooperative play for up to how many people?

Answer: Four

Hearkening back to the old "Super Mario" side-scrollers of yesteryear, "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" was the first of its kind since the Super Nintendo and the "Super Mario World" games, making it the ideal opportunity to get more than just one or two players in on the adventure. In this game, Mario, Luigi, and Blue and Yellow Toad can head out to save Princess Peach once again from a rampaging Bowser, this time with new power-ups like the Propeller Mushroom.

The game also gives a little bit of help. In a multiplayer game, if a character falls into a pit or loses a life, they appear in a bubble that any living players can burst to bring them back into the fold. If all four players happen to fail, preventing any bubbles from popping, then they lose the level.
3. A launch title for the Nintendo Wii, "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" allowed Link to transform into which of these?

Answer: Wolf

Releasing in November 2006 as one of the games-to-get on the Wii console launch day, "Twilight Princess" proved to be a darker entry in the "Legend of Zelda" series, especially after "The Wind Waker" on the Gamecube before it, as it placed Link into a darkness-blighted version of Hyrule, forcing him to fight against the void of the Twilight Realm as he passed through both worlds, in some cases in his Hylian form and in some cases as a wolf.

Taking into account that this game also became one of the first to use the Wii Remote, it was nothing short of the perfect chance to get the player engaged in more realistic sword-fighting (done just by shaking the remote to register) and bow-and-arrow play.

"The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" was rereleased in HD on the Wii U console in 2016.
4. Also launch title in Europe and Australia, which of these game titles included mini-games like Shooting Range, Table Tennis, and Billiards?

Answer: Wii Play

Similar to "Wii Sports" in that it was a showcase of activities that took advantage of the Wii Remote motion controls, "Wii Play" was a collection of short games that players could hop in and out of on a whim, and it released in most regions alongside the Wii (though later in the U.S.). Ultimately one of the best-selling games on the Wii, likely due to its accessibility, but also because it also released with an extra Wii Remote in some versions, it included a modern version of "Duck Hunt" using the Wii Remote's ability to point and shoot.

Notably, "Wii Play" was a high seller but it wasn't as highly-regarded as "Wii Sports", partly because it served as an entry-level Wii option without having the staying power as activities like bowling and tennis.
5. "Mario Kart Wii" was packaged with which Nintendo peripheral device?

Answer: Wii Wheel

Although the Wii Wheel didn't contain any special tech to enhance the Wii Remote beyond its existing capabilities, it did provide a unique opportunity for players to immerse themselves a bit more into the motion of driving their karts. Following up on classics like "Mario Kart 64" and "Double Dash", "Mario Kart Wii" was a natural crowd-pleaser, allowing up to four players to hold onto their Wii remotes and drive as though holding a steering wheel-- something that would have only been done in gaming if players had a specialized wheel or an arcade cabinet.

The sixth "Mario Kart" game, this one appeared on the console in 2008. Featuring two dozen characters and more than thirty courses, it was the top-selling game of the year across all platforms.
6. Which "Legend of Zelda" title was the first game to release with the Wii Zapper peripheral?

Answer: Link's Crossbow Training

For those who wanted to go back to the days of the NES light gun and the SNES Super Scope, the Wii Zapper followed through, creating a shapely device where players could slot in their Wii Remote and Nunchuck attachment to form a firearm. The only game this was bundled with was the short-and-sweet "Link's Crossbow Training", which came out in 2007 and effectively acted as a series of trials for new users of the device (with familiar faces and settings). In it, you simply needed to use Link's crossbow to hit targets or foes.

Though never mandatory, this new peripheral was best used in the console's semi-frequent rail shooter titles like "Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles", "Dead Space: Extraction", and the remake of "GoldenEye 007".
7. Mii Maestro and Handbell Harmony were mini-games included with what popular 2008 Wii title?

Answer: Wii Music

Although initially believed to be a bit lacking for its approach to unique gameplay, "Wii Music" eventually found its footing as a nostalgic title for the console, emphasizing Nintendo's playful sense of creativity, at least in-house. "Wii Music" offered more than five dozen instruments to play, all using the Wii Remote's buttons and motion controls, and it included several mini-games in which you could test your rhythm and know-how.

In an era when "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" were staking their claim in rhythm gaming, this offered up a more casual approach for all ages.
8. "Super Mario Galaxy" introduced what new character to the "Mario" series?

Answer: Rosalina

Princess Peach can't catch a break, and Mario is sent into outer space to stop Bowser in both "Super Mario Galaxy" and its sequel, both of which were colossal sales drivers for the Wii upon their releases in 2007 and 2010. In the first of these, however, Mario has the Lumas, small star-like beings, help him through the different Galaxies from the safety of the Astral Observatory, a massive ship that navigates its way around the cosmos with Rosalina at its helm. Naturally, after her introduction here, Rosalina because a Nintendo mainstay.

Both "Super Mario Galaxy" games were popular enough to return on the Nintendo Switch 2 and, in the case of the first, as part of "Super Mario 3D All-Stars". "Galaxy" would also end up forming the basis of the sequel to the hit 2023 film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie".
9. "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" has link commencing his adventure in which location flying over what will become the land of Hyrule?

Answer: Skyloft

Set in a time and realm long before Hyrule itself was actually formed into the world we recognize from other "Legend of Zelda" games, "Skyward Sword" has Link starting in the sky and descending to the planet below to embark on his adventure to defeat Demise. The story beats are similar-- Link has to save Zelda-- but this time he comes across a helpful sword known as Fi, and that sword contributes to new techniques that Link can use to navigate, battle, and solve puzzles.

"Skyward Sword" was specifically developed with particular attention paid to the Wii MotionPlus technology that would become standard in Wii Remotes going forward. Providing a more precise range of motion and dexterity, it allowed for refined actions that better-reflected in the game (that included sword-fighting, blocking, and parrying in real-time). "Skyward Sword" released on the Wii in late 2011, a year before Nintendo transitioned to the Wii U generation.
10. "Wii Fit", despite having a pricey add-on, was one of the bets-selling games on the Wii after its 2007 release. What peripheral was it packaged with?

Answer: Wii Balance Board

Becoming a massive Christmas hit in late 2007, "Wii Fit" was designed to provide console owners with an opportunity to use their gaming system in a new way, part of Nintendo's ongoing effort to get creative with the versatility and movement afforded the Wii console. Selling with a Wii Balance Board that could track pressure, weight, and balance, "Wii Fit" allowed users to manage their BMI, engage in yoga and strength training exercises, perform gentle aerobics, and to a degree, promote therapeutic activity.

Notable for its popularity with all ages-- especially the elderly and in injury rehabilitation-- "Wii Fit" sold tens of millions of units, games and boards, over its lifespan. Its sequel, "Wii Fit Plus" (released in 2009) would do much of the same.
