Rahini escapes, but is seriously injured, which leaves him with cancer of the spine and not very long to live. He resurfaces in Gardner's next novel, "Nobody Lives Forever" (1986), where he places a large bounty on Bond's head but is killed by Bond courtesy of a planted "bed bomb". The evil necromancer's powers prevent his soul from dying when his body is destroyed, allowing him to constantly return in other bodies to harass the Conclave.
