UK Bodies of Water Trivia Questions

1. Which north flowing river does Newport, county town of the Isle of Wight, stand on?

From Quiz
Flow North Young Stream

Answer: River Medina

All of these are north flowing rivers on the Isle of White, but the River Medina is the only one flowing through Newport. Due to the geography of the Isle of Wight, where the high ground is on the southern edge, most of the waters flow from south to north. Ferries from Hampshire sail to the mouths of all of these rivers except the Newtown River.

2. The source of the River Lea is located close to the town of Luton in which English county?

From Quiz River Lea

Answer: Bedfordshire

Like many rivers, the exact source of the River Lea is subject to some dispute, with some sources declaring it to begin at a Neolithic enclosure in Leagrave (a suburb of Luton) and others pointing to the fact that one of its tributaries, Houghton Brook, begins in the nearby town of Houghton Regis. However, both of these locations are within the county of Bedfordshire, so it is safe enough to declare that county as the source of the Lea (which is admittedly not such a grand claim as the much sought source of the Nile). The river initially flows south-east and east to Hertford, before heading south to the River Thames in East London - a route that covers approximately 68 km (42 miles). The incorrect options are all neighbouring counties to Bedfordshire but don't include any part of the course of the River Lea, which leaves the county via its southern neighbour, Hertfordshire.

3. Which English river, probably most famous for a song about a ferry which crosses it, enters the Irish Sea at Liverpool?

From Quiz Rivers of Britain

In the 1960s, Gerry and the Pacemakers released the song "Ferry Cross the Mersey", which reached number six in the USA charts, and number eight in the UK.

10. In Hertfordshire, some of the River Lea's water is diverted away to form the New River - an artificial waterway constructed in 1613 for what purpose?

From Quiz River Lea

Answer: To provide clean drinking water for London

Some consideration really ought to be given to giving the New River a more accurate name, not just because it is more than 400 years old but because, as a manmade waterway, it should really be described as a canal. Work on the 'river' began after a charter was granted for it by King James I in 1604 and it took nearly ten years to complete the 45 km (28 mile) route from the point in Hertfordshire where it was diverted from the River Lea to the Islington area of London. It was able to supply London with sufficient clean drinking water (taken both from the River Lea and from other wells and springs along its route) until the early 19th century when the growth in the city's population meant that additional sources had to be developed. The waters of the lower stretches of the River Lea in London have suffered significant pollution over the centuries from the heavy industries that developed on the riverbanks and surrounding land.

16. The rivers Mole, Wey, Wandle, Hogsmill and Darent are north flowing tributaries of which better known river?

From Quiz Flow North Young Stream

Answer: River Thames

These rivers and many others are all tributaries of the River Thames, and further all originate to the south of the river. The River Mole has its headwaters close to Gatwick Airport deviating from its northward course to find a gap through the North Downs before heading north again to meet the Thames close to Hampton Court. The two branches of the River Wey meet in Surrey, flow east to Godalming then head north north-east joining the Thames at Weybridge. The River Wandle is about 10 miles long and rises in south London. As with many rivers in urban areas, sections of it are now covered over but once it leaves Wandle Park in Croydon it is almost all open to the air until it joins the Thames in Wandsworth. The Hogsmill River is even shorter at around 6 miles long from Ewell and meeting the Thames close to Teddington Lock. The final tributary listed is the River Darent which joins the Thames to the east of London. More precisely it joins the river adjacent to the Dartford Marshes having started its journey 20 miles to the south in Kent close to Winston Churchill's former home of Chartwell.

17. Which other river, canalised in the mid-18th century, flows into the River Lea near the town of Hoddesdon?

From Quiz River Lea

Answer: River Stort

The River Stort flows from the village of Langley in Essex to the River Lea at Hoddesdon. It was named after the Hertfordshire town of Bishop's Stortford, which is where the Stort Navigation - the canalised, navigable portion of the Stort - begins. The canalisation project for the River Stort was authorised by an Act of Parliament (granted in 1766) and privately funded in exchange for the right to levy tolls. It took three years to complete and records of the tolls charged show that goods transported along the newly improved river included grain, flour, coal, lime and pigeon dung! (The latter of which was levied at 1 shilling and sixpence a ton.) The rivers Chess, Colne and Gade are the three rivers that collectively gave their name to Hertfordshire's Three Rivers Local Authority District.

18. This Welsh river rises as two rivers in the Brecon Beacons, which join north of Merthyr Tydfil to form the main river, which flows into the Bristol Channel at Cardiff. What is it called?

23. Which Kentish river flows north past a memorial which states in part, ".... when a Roman army crossed the river and defeated the British tribes under Caractacus"?

From Quiz Flow North Young Stream

Answer: Medway

The River Medway rises in Sussex and heads east all the way into Kent until it reaches Maidstone. From here it heads north until it flows in to the Thames estuary between the Isles of Grain and Sheppey. The Medway is not a tributary of the Thames but Edmund Spencer did describe it as the bride of the Thames in his poem "The Fairie Queen". The battle of Medway was a Roman victory, they surprised the Britons with a small force swimming across the river and launching an attack. The resulting commotion enabled the main attack to cross the river on rafts. That is at least the myth. It is not certain if this is the location or the river involved in the battle. It is however the site of the memorial.

24. Thanks to a series of historic canalisation works, the River Lea is navigable as far north as the city of Hertford. What name is generally used to refer to the navigable portion of the waterway?

From Quiz River Lea

Answer: Lee Navigation

The Lee Navigation is the name given to the navigable portion of the River Lea from Hertford to the River Thames. In general terms, the spelling 'Lee' is used for the sections of the river that have undergone major work to improve their navigability, along with any manmade cuts and canalised stretches. The spelling 'Lea' is reserved for natural features such as the 'unimproved' section upstream from Hertford. The work to create the Lee Navigation was carried out over several centuries. The first Act of Parliament for work to improve the navigability of the River Lea was passed in 1425 during the reign of King Henry VI, but early records of improvements to the river date back to the late 12th century. However, the most significant work, which produced the features of the navigation that can still be seen in the 21st century, took place during the period from 1750 to 1860. The New Lea Waterway and Hertford Ship Canal have never existed, but the Grand Union Canal is a major route on the English canal network.

25. Which English river forms most of the boundary between Devon and Cornwall?

From Quiz What's the British River?

Answer: Avon

Stratford was Shakespeare's birthplace. He is often known as 'The Bard of the Avon'.

30. The River Great Ouse flows north for its last 30 miles through Norfolk into the Wash. Water is abstracted from this river with a final destination of Abberton Reservoir 90 miles to the south. In which English county is Abberton Reservoir?

From Quiz Flow North Young Stream

Answer: Essex

Essex is one of the driest counties in England and Abberton Reservoir one of the largest reservoirs in England. The feeder stream for it doesn't provide anything like the amount of water required so since the creation of Abberton Reservoir, water has been extracted from elsewhere. Following the enlargement of the reservoir in the first decade of the 21st century, water is taken from the River Great Ouse and flows (or is pumped) through channels and pipes to the River Stour. Then it is abstracted again further downstream to feed reservoirs in Essex, including Abberton. The reservoir is also an important site for birds and when I visited I saw flocks of tufted ducks (several hundred) and coots (at least a hundred).
