While Perrin, Loial, Lan Mandrogan and Moiraine Damodred are following Rand, they stay at an inn in the Altaran village of Remen, where Faile is also staying. She is a Hunter of the Horn and the two Hunters she met are recovering from a fight with some Aiel (one of whom is Gaul). When Perrin's party take the boat to Illian, Faile joins them, as she finds their party of an Ogier, an Aes Sedai and her Warder, and a Two Rivers blacksmith interesting and hopes they might lead her to the Horn of Valere. She hates her real name of Zarine and considers calling herself Mandarb, until Perrin tells her it is the name of Lan's black stallion. She opts for her childhood nickname of Faile, or falcon, instead. Min had had a vision of Perrin with a falcon on one shoulder, and Perrin wonders if Faile is the falcon. Faile becomes a permanent member of the party in Illian, when Perrin accidentally reveals that Rand al'Thor is the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine warns Faile that she is sealed to them now and cannot leave.

Siuan Sanche is not pleased with Egwene and Nynaeve for wandering off and charges them with hunting the Black Ajah - despite them only being Accepted - as she does not trust any of the full sisters. Elayne Trakand also joins in the search, despite not being asked. Lanfear disguises herself as Else Grinwell (a novice who was kicked out for being too boy-crazy and lazy) and plants various objects belonging to the thirteen Black sisters in the White Tower, along with objects associated with Tear, such as a map and a timetable of ships to Tear, leading Egwene and friends to conclude that Liandrin and her group are there, even though Nynaeve thinks it is an obvious trap. When they go to Tear, they meet Juilin Sandar, a local thief-taker, and hire him to help track the sisters down. Unfortunately, Liandrin compels Juilin into betraying the girls, and all three of them are beaten up and taken to the Stone of Tear, where - as Liandrin gleefully tells them - they will be Turned to the Shadow by a group of Myrdraal. Mat Cauthon manages to break the girls out during the Aiel attack on the Stone of Tear, much to their annoyance.

Moridin, previously known as Ishamael, ultimately becomes Nae'blis and leads the Forsaken, using Cyndane and Moghedien as his errand girls. In the Age of Legends, he was a philosopher called Elan Morin Tedronai, and his more philosophical side comes out when he is reincarnated as Moridin. As Ishamael, he was the leader of the Forsaken in the War of Power and equal to Lews Therin Telamon, and was only partially sealed away, unlike the other Forsaken. He has fire coming out of his eyes and mouth, torments Rand and repeatedly orders him to join him and serve the Shadow. He also calls himself Ba'alzamon, a Trolloc name meaning 'Heart of he Dark'. Rand kills him with Callandor, but not before Ishamael manages to stab him in the side. As Moridin, he has a spiritual connection to Rand and Rand uses this to swap bodies with him after the two fight in Shayol Ghul.
