Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which culture does a married woman wear a red mark called a ki'sain on her forehead to indicate that she pledges her sons to fight the Shadow?

Answer: Malkieri

Unmarried Malkieri women who have made such a pledge wear a blue ki'sain, and a woman who has been widowed wears a white one.
2. If you were a male Ogier of marriageable age, who would be in charge of finding you a wife?

Answer: Your mother

When we first meet Loial, the Ogier featured most in the series, he is on the run from his mother Covril, who has a wife for him.
3. If you were a woman in Altara, what could you expect to receive as a wedding present from your husband?

Answer: A knife, because you are expected to stab him if he displeases you

Women wear these knives hanging from a cord or chain around their necks. The hilt is decorated with a stone for each of their children, which are colored to indicate whether a child is male or female, and alive or dead.
4. In which culture do marriage customs create equality by acknowledging that one partner may be of a higher rank in society than the other, and requiring that higher-ranked individual to submit to their spouse in private?

Answer: Atha'an Miere

The Sea Folk marriage model anticipates that a person's rank is likely to change over time, and that people may be both promoted and demoted in rank according to their performance and their circumstances. Therefore, a person who enters a marriage in a submissive role may find their partner promoted past them in the public world, and have to take a more dominant role at home, or vice-versa.

This dynamic is also adopted by Lan and Nynaeve, when they marry in an Atha'an Miere ceremony, though the options for change in external status for an Aes Sedai and Warder seem much sparser.
5. True or False: In "New Spring", we learn of a curious custom among Taraboners, that a young person takes an older first lover to instruct them in the ways of sex and relationships, and a young person in this sort of relationship wears their hair in a long braid that the older partner can use to signal control in the relationship

Answer: False

As "New Spring" mostly happens in the Borderlands, we don't really see Tarabon. This sort of relationship is described in the book as existing among the Malkieri. The older partner is called "carniera", and the braid worn by the younger partner is called a "daori". The woman in this partnership always chooses the man, whether she is the carniera or the young person in training.
6. Among the Aiel, a woman proposes marriage to a man by setting what item at the man's feet?

Answer: A wreath made of flowers

The bridal wreath is made by a woman to indicate her intent, and the flowers she chooses for the wreath communicate something about what she intends the marriage to be like.
7. In which culture can a marriage be performed between two people very far away from one another, if they both announce three times that the other person is now their spouse?

Answer: Seanchan

In the Seanchan Empire, spouses may be married without ever even meeting. The two parties need not even make the announcements at the same time, as Mat discovered.
8. Rand's unusual relationship status with Aviendha, Min, and Elayne would be most accepted in which culture?

Answer: Aiel

The Aiel practice polygyny, a custom by which one man may have multiple wives. Unlike most instances of cultural polygyny in Earth history, which tend to go with oppression of women, Aiel women tend to choose their sister-wives, with the men having relatively little say in the matter.
9. In Saldaea, married couples celebrate each year because their marriage has survived, and, according to Faile, because neither of them has been killed by trollocs. What is the name of this celebration, which means "remembrance" in the Old Tongue?

Answer: Shanna'har

The custom of Shanna'har is introduced in "Towers of Midnight". Carai means "honor", tai'shar means "true blood of" (in the sense that someone is an honor to their nation or people), and cuebiyari means "hearts" (in the metaphorical sense, as centers or souls).
10. In which culture does a young woman announce that she is old enough to be courted for marriage by braiding her hair and dancing around the Bel Tine pole?

Answer: Two Rivers

The move from girl to young woman in the Two Rivers is generally prompted, or at least approved, by the Women's Circle, who also have a say in any actual engagements and marriages.
11. If you were a member of the Seanchan High Blood, who would you be prohibited from marrying?

Answer: Someone who was da'covale

The Blood are, however, not prohibited from freeing their da'covale, making the freed person into a simple commoner. Nothing seems to prevent the Blood from marrying commoners and elevating them to the Blood.
12. True or False: Aes Sedai in the Third Age are prohibited from marrying.

Answer: False

Marriage is not prohibited, but it is uncommon except among members of the Green Ajah, some of whom choose to marry their Warders. Myrelle Sedai, in defiance of most Westlands culture, is said to be married to several of her Warders.
13. Among Aiel, the Far Dareis Mai (Maidens of the Spear) are said to be "wedded to the spear", and any who wish to marry a man must give up her spears forever. They are not prohibited from having lovers, though, and sometimes men who wish to be a Maiden's lover will arrange to be taken gai'shain by her. The Maidens are disdainful of this practice, however, and make these gai'shain perform what embarrassing service?

Answer: Sing to entertain the Maidens

Typically, Aiel men do not sing except battle songs and funeral dirges, so being made to sing for entertainment is considered humiliating. As for the other tasks, any gai'shain may be made to wash clothing, Aiel warriors wear the cadin'sor regardless of gender, and the Aiel have no particular taboo against nudity, so none of those things would be particularly embarrassing for a gai'shain.
14. In every nation in the Westlands, rulers and nobles can be expected to marry for political gain. In which small nation, however, does the current ruler deliberately remain unmarried in order to play various other nations against one another with a series of romantic liaisons, actual or suggested?

Answer: Mayene

Berelain sur Paendrag Paeron, the current First of Mayene, is reckoned as a master of politicking. In the books, she is seen as perpetually on the hunt for a match for herself that will keep Mayene safe from its larger neighbors, focusing first (briefly) on Rand, and then on Perrin.

She admits to having had a string of former lovers for political purposes, and this seems to be generally accepted by Mayeners.
15. While we have thus far not seen any culture that practices same-sex marriage in the Westlands, same-sex relationships do exist. What is the name in the White Tower for a relationship between two women?

Answer: Pillow-friends

So far, we have seen a number of female characters who are interested in other women, but no male characters who are explicitly stated to be interested in other men. The closest we come to an in-book discussion of men who love men is a line in "New Spring" where all the male clerks have been dismissed from the White Tower, "[e]ven men so old their grandchildren had children went, and some who had no liking for women at all".
