Beor's original name was Balan, and he only took the name Beor when he entered Finrod's service. Later, he was given the epithet "the Old", as he lived to the age of 93, an extremely long life for a man in the First Age. His line included such heroes such as Turin Turambar and Tuor, the father of Earendil and the forefather of the Dunadan.

Finduilas died when Boromir was ten years old, and her death had a crushing effect on Denethor, who began using the palantir of Minas Tirith, a decision that led to his later madness and suicide.
