Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first men to ally with the elves were those of the House of Beor. Their leader took the name Beor to indicate that he was a vassal to an Elvish King. Which king did Beor serve?

Answer: Finrod

Beor's original name was Balan, and he only took the name Beor when he entered Finrod's service. Later, he was given the epithet "the Old", as he lived to the age of 93, an extremely long life for a man in the First Age. His line included such heroes such as Turin Turambar and Tuor, the father of Earendil and the forefather of the Dunadan.
2. This hero of the Narn i Hin Hurin dwell in Doriath for many years, but left it to become an outlaw after slaying a counsellor of the king who attempted to kill him. Later, he would kill the dragon Glaurung, but commit suicide after learning that the woman he took for his wife was actually his sister. Which of these was he?

Answer: Turin

During one of the greatest battles fought in Middle Earth, the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (The Battle of Unnumbered Tears), Turin's father Hurin was captured by Morgoth and tortured, as Morgoth wanted to know the location of Gondolin. Hurin did not betray the location, however, and in his anger Morgoth cursed the children of Hurin and chained Hurin to Thangorodrim, where Hurin was forced to watch the cursed lives of his children.
3. Hurin fought side by side with Huor, who fell in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. While Hurin's line was cursed, Huor would become the forefather to both Elrond Half-Elven and the Kings of Numenor, through his son, who married the elf Idril. Who is the son I am referring to?

Answer: Tuor

Tuor lived in Gondolin with his wife in peace for many years, until Maeglin betrayed its location to Morgoth. Then he escaped to the Havens at the Mouth of Sirion, until his sea-longing grew so great that he sailed into the West with his wife. The Noldor hold that he was the only man allowed to pass into the West by the Valar.
4. When the Noldor marched across the Helcaraxe and men awoke in the East, many hoped that Morgoth could be defeated. Yet Morgoth slew Fingolfin, and Fingon died in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, and Turgon was slain when Gondolin was destroyed. All seemed lost, until a man took it on himself to beg the Valar for aid. Who was this man?

Answer: Earendil

Earendil sailed to Valinor with his wife Elwing, though men were not allowed on that island. But since Earendil was half-elven, and he undertook his voyage for the good of all men and elves, he was permitted to live. With a Silmaril on his bow, he could be seen by all Middle-Earth as the Evening Star.
5. The first king of Numenor was the son of Earendil and Elwing. As a reward for his father's bravery, and also for his own in the War of Wrath, he was permitted to choose whether to be man or elf. Who chose to be counted as a man, and so become the first king of Numenor?

Answer: Elros

The island of Numenor was raised to reward the Edain for their service in the War of Wrath. The Edain were also given a longer lifespan, especially those belonging to the House of Elros. Elros himself lived for 500 years.
6. The last man born on Numenor was the second son of Elendil, who was slain during the Siege of Barad-Dur. His youngest son Meneldil would become the King of Gondor after Isildur's death. Who was he?

Answer: Anarion

Anarion was killed by a stone flung from a catapult in Barad-Dur. His line would become the Kings of Gondor, but the main line died out when Earnur rode to battle the Witch-King.
7. After Elendil and Gil-Galad were slain battling Sauron, Sauron was slain when the First King of Gondor cut off the ring. Unfortunately, he would then claim the ring, and was killed along with his host at the Disaster of the Gladden Fields. Who was he?

Answer: Isildur

Isildur slew Sauron by cutting the ring off of his finger, and could have ended Sauron's threat for good if he had only destroyed it. Unfortunately, like many others, he was deceived by the Ring, and failed to destroy it.
8. The first King of Rohan was granted the plains of Calenardhon by Cirion, Steward of Gondor, after the Rohirrim (then called the Eotheod) rode to the aid of the Gondorians. Who was he?

Answer: Eorl

The granting of Calenardhon to the Rohirrim sealed an alliance between the Rohirrim and the men of Gondor. This alliance would be vital for the men of Gondor when King Theoden rode to the aid of Gondor against the forces of Mordor. However, the Dunlendings, who believed that Calenardhon was rightfully their land, became fierce enemies of the Rohirrim.
9. After destroying Erebor and Dale, the dragon Smaug retreated into the Lonely Mountain to sit on his hoard. But when 13 dwarves (and a hobbit) led by Thorin angered Smaug, it was a man who killed the dragon. What was his name?

Answer: Bard

After killing the dragon and proving his valor at the Battle of Five Armies, Bard became the King of Dale, improving relations with both the Wood-elves of Mirkwood and the Dwarves of Erebor.
10. Finally, this last question talks about perhaps the most famous man of the Third Age: Strider, Elessar, the King of the Reunited Kingdom. What was his birth name?

Answer: Aragorn

When his father was killed by orcs, Aragorn was taken to Imladris, where he was fostered by Lord Elrond and known as Estel. He was known as Strider or Longshanks to the men of Bree, who distrusted Rangers. When he traveled South, he was known as Thorongil, or the Eagle of the Star. When he became King, he took the name Telcontar, or Strider in Quenya.
