Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Theoden was King of Rohan, and son of King.... ?

Answer: Thengel

Thengel was the sixteenth King of Rohan. He was estranged from his father, King Fengel, and lived for many years in Gondor. He returned to Rohan in 2953 Third Age, when he became king. Theoden was his only son. He reigned for twenty-seven years.
2. Theoden's mother was a Lady of ....

Answer: the Dunedain

Her name was Morwen of Lossarnach, and she was one of the Southern branch of the Dunedain. She married Thengel in 2943 Third Age, and became the first of the Dunedain to marry one of the Rohirrim. She had three children with Thengel, of whom Theoden was their only son.
3. Theoden became King at the age of 32, when his father died in 2980 Third Age. How long did he reign?

Answer: until 3019

He was killed in 3019 Third Age, during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
4. Theoden had been heartbroken by the death of his beloved younger sister, Theodwyn, in 3001. He then adopted her children, and raised them as his own. How many children were there?

Answer: two - a boy and a girl

Theodwyn had married Eomund, a Marshal of the Mark of Rohan. Eomund died a year before his wife, and the children were left orphaned. Theoden raised them as his own, and referred to them as 'sister-son' and 'sister-daughter'. At his death he said that Eowyn was 'dearer than daughter' to him.
5. Which hobbit did Theoden particularly like, and make his Esquire?

Answer: Merry

Theoden met Merry at Isengard, where he was impressed with the hobbit's cheerful outlook, and fondness of food and drink. Theoden had never heard of the habit of pipesmoking. He made Merry his Esquire; the hobbit accompanied him to battle, and was at his side when the King was killed.
6. What was the name of King Theoden's court?

Answer: Meduseld

Meduseld was known as the 'Golden Hall', thanks to the pure gold leaf which covered the ceilings and pillars, and the richly woven tapestries which were hung throughout. It was situated in the hill-fortress of Edoras. Helm's Deep was a series of fortifications in the White Mountains. Dunharrow was another fortress, located in the mountains, known to many as the entrance to the Paths of the Dead. Isengard was of course the location of Saruman's fortress of Orthanc.
7. Theoden was succeeded to the throne by his nephew. This was because he had never had children of his own. True or false?

Answer: False

Theoden had a son, Theodred. He was the Second Marshal of the Mark, but was killed at the age of 40 at the first Battle of the Fords of Isen in 3018.
8. Who was Theoden's chief adviser, at the time when Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arrived at his court?

Answer: Grima

Grima, son of Galmod, and also known as Wormtongue, was in the pay of Saruman. He nearly succeeded in convincing Theoden that he was too old and feeble to defend the Mark. Hama was the Captain of Theoden's household, and the Doorward of Meduseld. He was later killed at the Battle of Hornburg.
9. Theoden remained in Rohan, while Eomer led the army to the defence of Gondor. True or false?

Answer: False

Eowyn was ordered to stay and lead the people, while Theoden led his men into battle. In fact, Eowyn decided to join the war host in disguise.
10. How did King Theoden die?

Answer: he was killed at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields

After leading his troops into battle, his horse, Snowmane, was attacked by the Lord of the Nazgul. Theoden fell, and was killed. Before he died, he named Eomer as his successor. He regretted that he would now never be able to sit with Merry and share a pipe. His last thoughts were of his beloved nephew and niece.
