Horror Movie Monsters Trivia Questions

1. In which movie did Christopher Lee play Frankenstein's monster?

From Quiz
Ape About Frankenstein's Monster II

Answer: Curse of Frankenstein

Victor Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) successfully brought a dead dog back to life. He decided to put together the perfect person. He put a robber's corpse with hands and eyes from others. To get a good brain for the creation, he pushed his professor off the top of the stairs, killing him, and later removed the professor's brain. He put the brain and various parts together and brought the monster (Christopher Lee) to life. As time went on the monster turned violent and killed a blind man in the woods. Frankenstein's assistant, Dr. Paul Krempe (Robert Urquaart) shot the monster and buried it in the woods. However, Dr. Frankenstein went back and dug up the monster and brought it back to life. "Curse of Frankenstein" was one of the first of the Hammer horror films starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. This was the only time Lee played Frankenstein's monster.

2. In the first talkie movie called "Frankenstein" (1931), how did Frankenstein's monster meet its end?

From Quiz Ape About Frankenstein's Monster

Answer: He was inside a burning windmill.

The 1931 "Frankenstein" movie involved Dr. Frankenstein "building" a man and bringing it to life during a lightning storm. The lightning struck the monster and later it woke up. Frankenstein and the townspeople made preparations for Frankenstein's wedding until a man carried his drowned daughter to the village. Frankenstein and the townspeople hunted for the one responsible, but Frankenstein knew who it was, and he was alone when he caught up to the monster. They fought in the windmill until the monster threw Frankenstein out. The villagers set fire to the windmill. Frankenstein survived the fall and was taken home to recover.

3. 'Late Phases: Night of the Lone Wolf' is a horror film about a blind Vietnam War veteran who winds up fighting for his life after others around him become victims to fatal attacks. What is the setting for this 2014 werewolf gem?

From Quiz Where Wolf?

Answer: Retirement community

Nick Damici plays the role of Ambrose, who, along with his seeing eye dog named Shadow, moves into a retirement community. Some of the residents are found violently murdered by what appears to be a vicious animal. Ambrose decides it's time to take matters into his own hands and eliminate the problem. Tina Louise and Karen Lynn Gorney are among the stars in this entertaining film.

4. Based on a horror novel by William Peter Blatty, what 1973 Oscar-nominated film pitted Father Merrin against a demon from Hell?

From Quiz Say Your Prayers... And Die

Answer: The Exorcist

In this horror classic, the first of the genre to be nominated for an Oscar (it received 10 nominations, including Best Picture, and won two), Father Merrin (played by Max von Sydow) was one of the Catholic priests called in to exorcize a demon, later discovered to be named Pazuzu in a sequel, from a young Washington D.C. girl by the name of Regan. Merrin's fate is inevitable from early on; both he and Father Karras risk their lives during the battle of good vs. evil, ultimately saving Regan. The movie was a huge success earning over $440,000,000 in the box office and joining the U.S. National Film Registry. Director William Friedkin was nominated for Best Director, an award he won two years earlier for "The French Connection".

5. What 2001 remake featured murderous specters which could only be seen with special goggles?

From Quiz Invisible Monsters

Answer: Thir13en Ghosts

"Thir13en Ghosts" starred Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth (in a role too young for her age) and Matthew Lillard. The movie involved a man and his family inheriting a luxurious glass house from an eccentric, ghost-hunting uncle. When they took the house for a test ride and found that it was inhabited by a dozen ravenous ghosts, all of which were placed in unique containment units in the basement, they fought to find a way out. Fortunately, the whole place sealed off. Most importantly, the evils were ghosts; the main characters needed to wear special 'ghost-seeing goggles' in order to know what they were up against. Ironically, a lot of people were killed by the mechanisms of the house as opposed to the ghouls within. You shouldn't throw stones in glass houses... you shouldn't harbour ravenous ghosts either. "Thir13en Ghosts" earned over $68,000,000 in the box office and became Dark Castle Entertainment's second box office success (after "The House on Haunted Hill"). It was one of the production company's highest-earners in its first decade and it was a remake of William Castle's 1960 film "13 Ghosts". Director Steve Beck also directed "Ghost Ship" in 2002.

Frankenstein took the monster and his assistants back to the old building where he had brought the monster to life in the previous movie. "Terror is on the menu!" is the tagline to this fun low budget film.

17. An ambitious young doctor risks everything for his research into the human psyche. Which 1931 film, directed by Rouben Mamoulian, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's in a Title? Horror Films Volume III

Answer: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The title comes from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 short novel "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". It's about a young doctor, Dr Jekyll, and his quest to control man's two sides; good and evil. "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" has been adapted for the silver screen many times, but Rouben Mamoulian's version is one of the most celebrated. It was made in Pre-Code Hollywood, so it's pretty racy. Hyde's brutality isn't tempered either. Fredric March is genuinely scary as Hyde, and the special effects of his transformation are astounding. Is it me or does Dr Jekyll have a posh English accent and Mr Hyde an American one? About the red herrings: both Tod Browning's "Dracula" and James Whale's "Frankenstein" came out in 1931, "The Gay Desperado" was a 1936 comedy directed by Rouben Mamoulian.

18. In what 1980 John Carpenter film did a priest fear for a ship of ghosts docking in Antonio Bay?

From Quiz Say Your Prayers... And Die

Answer: The Fog

Released two years after Carpenter's hit slasher flick, "Halloween", "The Fog" was set in a seaside town cursed by the ghosts of sailors who were killed a century earlier. When Father Malone (played by Hal Holbrook) found a journal outlining the event he feared that the ghosts would return to kill the descendants of the men who sunk their ship. The movie also starred Carpenter's then-wife Adrienne Barbeau and scream queen (and frequent collaborator) Jamie Lee Curtis. The film earned over $20,000,000 in the box office and received the remake treatment in 2005 (to critical panning). The original has since become a cult classic.

19. Following a couple experiencing inexplicable spooky events in their house, what 2009 movie involved an evil which remained unseen until it possessed one of the protagonists?

From Quiz Invisible Monsters

Answer: Paranormal Activity

Despite knowledge of a possible evil demon suspected to be lurking in their home, Micah and Katie never witnessed the true form of the evil specter throughout the entirety of the 2009 independent hit, "Paranormal Activity". After several paranormal events recorded on Micah's HD video camera, the couple's prying into the mysteries of their home and the hauntings of Katie's past triggered a final attack in which the invisible demon took over Katie's body. The events of the original "Paranormal Activity" were preceded by the events shown in "Paranormal Activity 2" during which, once again, no monster was clearly shown. Made on a meager $15,000 budget, the original film earned almost $200,000,000 overall. The second, likewise, earned $175,000,000. Both were relatively well-received by critics and viewers alike.

20. Which horror film special effects artist did NOT create special make up effects for George A. Romero's "Day of the Dead" (1985)?

From Quiz Horror Movies: Death Be Not Proud

Answer: Robert Kurtzman

Berger and Nicotero worked with Tom Savini on "Day of the Dead" (1985) and again on "Creepshow 2" (1987). Berger worked with Kurtzman on "Night of the Creeps" (1986), "Predator" (1987), and "Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn" (1987). Although Nicotero is uncredited for his work with Berger and Kurtzman on "Predator" (with Stan Winston) and "Evil Dead II" (with Mark Shostrom), these films mark the unoffical beginning of KNB EFX Group, Inc.

21. "New thrills! New shocks! New terror!" Grasshoppers are irradiated as part of an experimental agricultural project in the Midwest. The transformed giant grasshoppers attack Chicago. What was the name of the 1957 movie?

From Quiz 50s Monsters: Insects and Other Crawlers

Answer: He was kicked into the sulfur pit.

When Ygor showed Wolf Frankenstein the monster, Ygor talked Wolf into helping the monster become strong again, but he didn't know until later that Ygor was using the monster to kill the people who had sentenced Ygor to death. Previously, Ygor (Bela Lugosi) had been hung and pronounced dead, but he wasn't dead after all, although his neck was now crooked. When Wolf discovered that the monster (Boris Karloff) had run off with his son, Peter, after having murdered people because of Ygor, Wolf (Basil Rathbone) shot Ygor several times and swung on a rope, like Tarzan, knocking the monster into the sulfur pit.
