Foreign Mixture Trivia Questions

1. An American journalist in Prague is found dead and taken to the morgue, but he is actually alive and trapped inside his body. He tries to figure out what happened to his girlfriend, who has gone missing. Which 1971 film am I describing?

From Quiz
Giallo Films

Answer: Short Night of Glass Dolls

Directed by Aldo Lado, "Short Night of Glass Dolls" stars Jean Sorel, Ingrid Thulin and future Bond-girl Barbara Bach. The score was composed by Ennio Morricone. The role of Gregory Moore, played by Jean Sorel, was originally wanted by Aldo Lado to be played by Spaghetti Western star Terence Hill.

2. A vagabond who takes on the job of mechanic and handyman at a rural restaurant-cum-garage ends up having an affair with the owner's wife. Which 1943 film, directed by Luchino Visconti, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's in a Title? Italian Cinema Volume V

Answer: Ossessione

The story of "Ossessione" was taken from James M. Cain's novel "The Postman Always Rings Twice", but it was overshadowed by Tay Garnet's film "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946) for many years. One of the reasons for this was that Visconti had failed to get the rights to the novel, so when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer did, they effectively vetoed the distribution of "Ossessione" and it remained an unsung masterpiece for decades. Italy's fascist government wasn't keen on the film either and destroyed all the prints which were in circulation. However, Visconti had kept a set of negatives and the film survived. The quality of the print is rough, but it's still well worth watching. "Ossessione" is on the list of "100 Film Italiani da Salvare/100 Italian Films to Save".

3. Newly-crowned King Sedemondo banishes his newborn nephew Arminio to the Valley of the Lions, but years later the rightful heir to the throne returns. Which 1941 film, directed by Alessandro Blasetti, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's in a Title? Italian Cinema Volume IV

Answer: The Iron Crown

The title refers to a crown which is passing through the kingdom on its way to Rome. Legend has it that the iron crown, which was made with a nail from the true cross, spreads goodness wherever it goes. This tale is revealed to the warmongering king by a soothsayer. King Sedemondo actually commits both regicide and fratricide in order to gain power, and then banishes his dead brother's son. The true heir had been switched at birth with Sedemondo's daughter by his wife and sister-in-law. When he realizes what the two women have done, he sends his nephew to the Valley of the Lions where he is raised by the lions rather than eaten by them. The plot doesn't get any simpler either. "The Iron Crown" is an interesting film for many reasons. The plot is anything but a simple fantasy adventure and remains unpredictable through most of the film. Furthermore, the sets, photography and direction are fabulous, particularly when you consider it was made during war time. It's surprising that such a thinly-veiled condemnation of tyranny was allowed under fascism, but it actually won the Coppa Mussolini at the Venice Film Festival. Apparently, Goebbels said the director would have been shot had he been German. One of the red herrings, "The Jester's Supper", was also directed by Blasetti. It is said to be the first Italian film to show bare breasts, Clara Calamai's to be precise.

4. A Roman patrician falls in love with Lygia, a young Christian woman, and converts just as Emperor Nero is upping the persecuction of the Christians. Which 1912 silent film, directed by Enrico Guazzoni, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's In A Title? Italian Cinema Volume III

Answer: Quo Vadis?

The film is based on the 1895 novel "Quo Vadis: A Narrative of the Time of Nero" by Henryk Sienkiewicz, although "Quo vadis?", which translates from Latin as "Where are you going?". "Quo Vadis?" is often said to be the first sword-and-sandals blockbuster, and its scale is certainly impressive even today. However, much of the camera work is quite static and it lacks something. Having said that, the fact that it's still very watchable over 100 years after being made is quite an achievement. One noteworthy sequence is the Great Fire of Rome, which in the film is unreservedly attributed to Nero. It's the one bit of the film which breaks away from staginess and indulges in some more experimental, abstract imagery.

5. GERMANY: Wim Wenders directed the story of an angel who loses his wings and becomes mortal for the love of a trapeze artist. Which movie is it?

From Quiz An Atlas Worth of Movies

Answer: Wings of Desire

Damiel, an angel, lives in Berlin and watches over people by helping and comforting them. Over time, he becomes unhappy with his immortality and wishes to experience life. When he meets Marion, a circus artist, he falls in love with her and decides to become mortal for her sake. This 1987 black and white and color movie (humans see color, angels only black and white) with Bruno Ganz and Solveig Dommartin became a huge success in Europe, which led to an American remake with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage.

6. Which Scottish actor plays the roles of Tommy Lawrence, a heroin addict always looking for his next fix in "Trainspotting", and Malky Johnson, a small-time Glasgow gang leader, in "Small Faces"?

From Quiz World Cinema

Answer: Kevin McKidd

Kevin McKidd died in both "Trainspotting" and "Small Faces". As Tommy Lawrence he died from a heroin overdose and as Malky Johnson he died in a gas explosion. Both films were released in 1996. Kevin McKidd gained more fame for his role as Tommy in "Trainspotting". He later went on to star in several Hollywood movies such as "Dog Soldiers", "Hannibal Rising" and "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief". 7. Belgian movie directors Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne have won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival several times. Which movie earned them their first Golden Palm? This movie follows a girl looking for a job.

From Quiz European Movies

Answer: Rosetta

All these movies by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne were nominated for the Golden Palm. "Rosetta" (1999) describes the desperate search of a young girl for a job. The star of this movie is Emilie Dequenne. The movie has had such an impact that the Belgian government named one of the employment programs "Rosetta". Luc (born 1954) and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (born 1951) are brothers who write, produce and direct their movies together. Many scenes are recorded with a handheld camera. Most movies by the brothers Dardenne deal with poor, unemployed people. "Le fils" (2002) was nominated for a Golden Palm and won the jury prize. "L'enfant" (2005) won the Golden Palm. Only a few directors have won the Golden Palm for two of their movies. "Le silence de Lorna" (2008) was nominated for a Golden Palm and won the Best Screenplay award. This question was brought to you by player JanIQ from Belgium.

8. Which director--of classics such as "The Mask of Satan" and "Black Sabbath"--is often considered the 'father' of Italian horror?

From Quiz Maestros of Italian Horror

Answer: Mario Bava

Mario Bava (1914-1980) directed some of the most influential horror movies ever. "Bay of Blood" (aka "Twitch of the Death Nerve") was heavily 'borrowed from' by the makers of "Friday the 13th". Bava's first film as director, and the very first Italian science fiction film, was "Le morte viene dallo spazio" (1958).

9. The Danes' little sweetheart, Lille Per (Little Per), really shows how much energy he's got in this 1950's-60's series of movies. In what Danish movie may you most likely experience this little boy?

17. A masked killer murders students in a village nearby Perugia with a saw. A girl runs with her friends, but the killer goes after them. Which 1973 giallo does this description fit?

From Quiz Giallo Films

Answer: Torso

"Torso" was an early slasher film directed by Sergio Martino. It stars Suzy Kendall, John Richardson, Luc Merenda and Tina Aumont. Filmmaker Eli Roth considers this film his favorite giallo; he also cast Luc Merenda in his "Hostel: Part II" (2007), in which Italian sex symbol Edwige Fenech also had a part. The Italian title of this film is "I Corpi Presentano Tracce di Violenza Carnale", literally translated as "The Bodies Bear Traces of Carnal Violence", as the word "torso" doesn't exist in Italian language.

18. One of the early French movies to win the category Best Foreign Movie was "Jeux Interdits" (1952). Who directed this movie?

From Quiz OK, Great!

Answer: René Clement

René Clement (1913-1996) was the first French director to create several Best Foreign Movies. "Au delà des grilles" (1949, "The Walls of Malapaga") and "Jeux Interdits" (1952, "Forbidden Games") both won the honorary award, and Clement was also nominated for his 1955 movie "Gervaise". "Jeux Interdits" was set in France occupied by Hitler's troops, and told about a very young orphan girl named Paulette (played by Brigitte Fossey, aged six) residing with another family. Paulette and the young teen Michel tried to cope with death of their beloved family members by performing funeral rituals on deceased animals. René Clair, Eric Rohmer and Henri-Georges Clouzot may have directed movies of which I would say "Oh, Great", but they did not win the title of Best Foreign Movie. I'll mention their nominated movies: "Porte des Lilas" (1956, René Clair), « La Vérité » (1959, Clouzot) and « Ma nuit chez Maud » (1968, Eric Rohmer).

19. Which German actor played the lead in the award winning film "Das Boot" ("The Boat")?

From Quiz World Movies

Answer: Jurgen Prochnow

Set in a U Boat in WWII and based on the novel of the same name by Lothar Gunther-Bucheim, this atmospheric Wolfgang Petersen film is regarded as one of the best German Films and won acclaim around the world for its realism and the power of its acting, especially that of Prochnow. The story is told from the perspective of a journalist travelling in the U Boat who witnesses the moods, characters and opinions of the crew as they undergo their terrifying adventures. It's a German war film with unusual perspectives on the war, with characters revealing bravery and loyalty to their country mostly as ordinary men detached from Nazi politics. Prochnow has also acted in some Hollywood films such as "Air Force One", "Dune" and "Beverley Hills Cop II".

20. In 1971, the National Film Board of Canada released one of the most successful Canadian films of all time. Directed by Claude Jutra, this film shows the pre-Asbestos Strike Quebec from the perspective of a 15-year-old boy. Which movie is this?

From Quiz Made in Canada

Answer: Mon Oncle Antoine

"Mon Oncle Antoine" is set before the Asbestos Strike, a four-month long strike by asbestos miners which was very violent, as the miners killed and kidnapped people as a way of protest. This event is said to have shaped Canadian history, particularly that of Quebec. The movie stars Jacques Gagnon and Jean Duceppe, and tells the story of Benoit, a 15-year-old boy living in a mining town, showing how society was back then.

21. When Antonio gets a job as a bill poster, he and his family think the hardship of poverty will soon be over, but a chance turn of misfortune upsets everything. Which 1948 film, directed by Vittorio De Sica, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's in a Title? Italian Cinema Volume V

Answer: The Bicycle Thieves

The film has been known as "The Bicycle Thief" and "The Bicycle Thieves". The latter is not only a more faithful translation of the original title, "Ladri di Biciclette", but also captures an essential detail which gives the film a dynamic twist. It has headed countless lists of "greatest films of all time", is in the top ten on the BFI list of the "50 films you should see by the age of 14", has been cited as an influence by practically any director worth his or her salt, and is probably the first film which springs to mind when you think of Italian Neorealism. All well-deserved accolades, of course. "The Bicycle Thieves/Ladri di Biciclette" is on the list of "100 Film Italiani da Salvare/100 Italian Films to Save".

22. A teenager is dealing in stolen goods on the black market in post-War Berlin. When his ailing father admits he'd be better off dead, the young lad has an idea. Which 1948 film, directed by Roberto Rossellini, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's in a Title? Italian Cinema Volume IV

Answer: Germany, Year Zero

The title "Germany, Year Zero/Germania, Anno Zero" was borrowed from French sociologist Edgar Morin's 1946 book "L'An Zéro de l'Allemagne". Rossellini never fully explained his choice, but film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum has put forward the following clue: "The very title of the film offers not so much a documentary fact as a subjective reading of a documentary fact: not just a city and a population reduced to chaos but a terrain leveled spiritually and morally (which implies a place to build, but not necessarily or specifically what is to be built there)." The film was partly shot in the rubble of Berlin, and partly in Roman studios, and mostly acted by non-professional German actors. The major flaw of the film is the Italian dubbing of German speakers. The Italian penchant for post-synching dialogue is the bane of Italian cinema, and causes distraction, but if the fiction is taking place in Italy, it can be forgiven. On the other hand, the realism of "Germany, Year Zero/Germania, Anno Zero" is criminally compromised by the dubbing into Italian.

23. Karin, a displaced Lithuanian, marries Mario, a Sicilian fisherman, but she can't settle in on the unwelcoming volcanic island where he lives. Which 1950 film, directed by Roberto Rossellini and starring Ingrid Bergman, am I talking about?

From Quiz What's In A Title? Italian Cinema Volume III

Answer: Stromboli

"Stromboli/Stromboli, Terra di Dio" is often remembered as the film which brought Rossellini and Bergman together. They had an adulterous relationship which lasted seven years and produced three children. The film itself is a cracker, and not just as historical interest for the scenes of tuna fishing, as is sometimes believed. None of the characters come out of it very well as they all act nefariously. Neither is it a great advert for the grim island of Stromboli, which looks like the Falkland Islands without the sheep. Bergman starred in Hitchcock's "Spellbound" (1945) and Rossellini's "Fear/La Paura"(1954). "Stromboli/Stromboli, Terra di Dio" is on the list of "100 Film Italiani da Salvare/100 Italian Films to Save".

24. SOUTH AFRICA: Which is the hilarious movie about a Sho in the Kalahari desert and a coke bottle?

From Quiz An Atlas Worth of Movies

Answer: The Gods Must Be Crazy

The Kalahari desert bushman Xi's first encounter with civilization is a coke bottle thrown from a small plane. The bottle becomes a magical object for his tribe but since it brings violence and unhappiness, Xi decides to return it to the Gods, where he thinks it came from. The film can be controversial for some people but I found it funny, smart and very uplifting.

25. Brandon Lee was the star of the box office hit "The Crow". During the making of this movie Brandon Lee died. What was the cause of his death?

From Quiz World Cinema

Answer: Shot on set

In this scene, Funboy (Michael Massee) shot The Crow (Brandon Lee), with what he believed was just a blank bullet. He was unaware, as was the cast, that the remnants of a real bullet were also fired, causing Brandon Lee's death. Many people still believe that Brandon Lee's death was no accident. It's alleged he was deliberately shot because he refused to payoff the massive build-up of his father, Bruce Lee's, debts. Before Brandon Lee's untimely death he also starred in "Legacy of Rage" and "Showdown in Little Tokyo".

26. "Pan's Labyrinth" (2006) is a blend of fantasy, magic, and the realism of a war. What twentieth century war provides the background for this film?

From Quiz Sub-Titled Films

Answer: Spanish Civil War

Eleven year old Ofelia and her pregnant mother travel to be with her step-father, a ruthless military man vowed to hunt down and exterminate the rebels. Ofelia enters a world filled with magical creatures whereby she creates a parable of that war. Nominated for six Academy Awards, it garnered three wins for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Makeup. It likewise won many international awards.

27. Released in Germany the early 20s, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's famous silent movie still remains a timeless classic in horror films. Which black-and-white movie features Max Schreck in the hideous lead role?

From Quiz European Movies

Answer: Nosferatu

"Nosferatu" was released in 1922 in Germany under the title "Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens" (a symphony of terror). The film is an unauthorised adaption of Bram Stoker's "Dracula". Supposed to be destroyed in 1925 due to copyright infringement, several film reels survived and today several restored versions of the film exist. "Nosferatu" features Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok, Murnau's version of Dracula. Considered as one of the first horror films, "Nosferatu" was groundbreaking for the entire genre. Murnau (1888 - 1931) is to this day considered as one of Germany's most important and influencing directors. Our player Evil Sorcerer prepared this question for you.

28. In Dario Argento's "Profondo Rosso" ("Deep Red"), we see the killer's face early on. Where can it be seen?

Released in 1975, "Deep Red" is considered by many to be Argento's masterpiece. The killer's face can be seen early in the film, blending in with faces in a painting in a victim's house. Because the scene is shown so briefly and because there are so many strange paintings in the hallway, we don't realize this until we are shown again at the end. Argento's horror memorabilia store, located in Rome, is named after this film.
