Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Among Ingmar Bergman's greatest works is 'Smultronstället', the story of a certain Professor Isak Borg who goes on the road to receive an academic prize. What is the English title of this film that explores the meaning of life?

Answer: Wild Strawberries

This wonderfully filmed, low-key film features the acting of Victor Sjöström as Professor Borg, and includes an appearance by one of Bergman's favorites, Max von Sydow, as Henrik Åkerman.
2. The 1948 film 'Ladri di biciclette' could very well be the greatest work from noted Italian film director Vittorio De Sica. By what name is this film better known in the English speaking world?

Answer: The Bicycle Thief

The film features Lamberto Maggiorani as Antonio Ricci, a poor worker heading for his new job, and Vittorio Antonucci as the thief who steals his bike. His other masterwork is called 'Umberto D', also worth a look.
3. In 2001, a wonderful film came out of France that starred Audrey Tautou in the title role. The French name of the film is: 'Le Fabuleux destin d'_______ Poulain'. What name goes in the blank to both complete the French title and provide the English title?

Answer: Amélie

'Amélie' (or 'Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain') is a wonderfully quirky film featuring the adventures of a young woman in search of love. The director and lead scriptwriter for the film, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, co-directed the wonderful films 'Delicatessen' and 'The City of Lost Children' with Marc Caro. Both are worth a look!
4. Starring Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi, the Mandarin Chinese language film 'Wo Hu Cang Long' took the world by storm in the year 2000. By what English name is this multiple award winning film known?

Answer: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' was a stunning visual treat directed by the Taiwan-born Ang Lee. Lee's films also include 'The Wedding Banquet' (Hsi Yen), 'Eat Drink Man Woman' (Yin Shi Nan Nu) and 'Sense and Sensibility'. All are fine films.
5. Akira Kurosawa is Japan's most prized director. His many masterpieces include the 1957 classic 'Kumonosu Jô' which he based on Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'. What was this film called upon its original release in the West?

Answer: Throne of Blood

The eerie action-thriller 'Throne of Blood', aka 'Kumonosu Jô', starred Kurosawa's favorite actor Toshirô Mifune. It was one of many triumphs for the extraordinarily talented Japanese director whose works also included 'Rashomon', 'Yojimbo' and 'Shichinin no Samurai' (The Seven Samurai).

Many of his films have been adapted by directors in the United States, including 'Star Wars', 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'A Fistful of Dollars'.
6. Lots of running takes place in the 1998 German film 'Lola Rennt', and thus its English title is not entirely surprising. By what name is this frenetic film known in the English speaking world?

Answer: Run Lola Run

Directed by Tom Tykwer, 'Run Lola Run' features three alternate stories based on various choices made by the main character Lola, portrayed by Franka Potente. The tagline: 'Lola runs. To save her boyfriend's life.'
7. One of the most interesting directors from Spain is Pedro Almodóvar, who has directed several great films, including the 1991 'Tacones lejanos', the story of a mother-daughter relationship. By what name was this film known in English?

Answer: High Heels

Almodóvar's films also include 'Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!' (aka '¡Átame!') and 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown' (aka 'Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios). He won a Best Screenplay Oscar for his writing on the 2002 film 'Talk to Her' (aka 'Hable con Ella').
8. Coming out of Mainland China in 1993 was Chen Kaige's epic 'Ba Wang Bie Ji', a tale of two men who spend their lives as actors in the Beijing Opera. What English title was chosen for this lavish work?

Answer: Farewell My Concubine

'Farewell My Concubine' featured the acting of Gong Li and Ge You, two of China's most famous thespians. After Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige is probably China's most esteemed director internationally. He also directed 'Yellow Earth' (Huang Tudi), 'Life on a String' (Bian Zou Bian Chang) and 'Killing Me Softly'.
9. Believed by many to be Russia's greatest director, Sergei Eisenstein directed a number of classic films in his storied career. Among these was his 1925 film 'Bronenosets Potyomkin', which is better known to us in English as...?

Answer: The Battleship Potemkin

Based on a true story of an actual occurrence in 1905, the film 'Bronenosets Potyomkin' was well ahead of its time in the quality of its creation of film editing techniques. Apparently, it was Charlie Chaplin's favorite film.
10. Some of my favorite films have come from Hong Kong, where Cantonese is the common tongue. Perhaps the greatest actor-director team from Hong Kong has been John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat, who collaborated on a number of films, including the 1992 'Lashou Shentan'. Also featuring Hong Kong heart-throb Tony Leung, what is the name of this action-thriller with a stunning set of sequences filmed in a hospital?

Answer: Hard-Boiled

Chow Yun-Fat plays Tequila (Yuen), while Tony Leung portrays his friend, an undercover cop named Alan. This film and the 'Better Tomorrow' trilogy are probably the best collaborations between Chow and Woo. However, my favorite Cantonese language films featuring Chow Yun-Fat are 'Full Contact' (Xia dao Gao Fei), directed by Ringo Lam, and the very funny 'God of Gamblers' series. Thank you for trying this quiz, I hope you enjoyd it and will try some of my other stuff.
