Music from 1964 Trivia Questions

1. "Glad All Over" was a number one hit for which British pop group?

From Quiz
Hits of 1964 - Part 2

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

"Glad All Over" was recorded by The Dave Clark Five and was written by Dave Clark and Mike Smith. It got to number one in the UK, number two in Canada, number three in Australia and number six in the US. It has since been covered by Suzi Quatro (1980) and The Pet Shop Boys (2010).

2. This Jan and Dean song from 1964 describes a street race between a "Stingray" and a "Jag" that ends tragically. Do you remember this ditty?

From Quiz How Well Do You Remember 1964?

Answer: Dead Man's Curve

William Jan Berry and Dean Ormsby Torrence met in 1957 while playing football for University High School in Los Angeles, California. Jan and Dean were formed in 1959 and had their first hit with "Baby Talk", which peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 from that year. "Dead Man's Curve" was the duo's fourth top ten hit, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1964. Jan Berry had a near-fatal accident in 1966 when he crashed his own Stingray into a parked truck not far from the locations described in the song. Berry returned to the act in 1967 and the twosome continued to perform right up until Berry's death in 2004.

3. Which US Top Twenty Instrumental was released by The Pyramids in 1964?

From Quiz One-Word US Top Forty Hits from 1964.

Answer: Penetration

The Pyramids formed in 1961 in Long Beach, California. They released "Pyramid Stomp" in 1962. The year 1964 was a banner year for the band. In addition to having a Top Twenty hit on Best Records with "Penetration" the group also performed "Bikini Drag" and "Record Run" as part of the cast of "Bikini Beach". The group appeared wearing Beatle wigs which they took off to reveal bald heads. They also backed Frankie Avalon singing "How About That?" and Little Stevie Wonder's "Happy Feelin' (Dance and Shout)" in the movie. "Baja" (1963) was recorded by The Astronauts. The Australia based Atlantics had a 1963 Surf hit with "Bombora". "Shazam!" was released by Duane Eddy and The Rebels in 1960.

4. The Beatles hit the Billboard Hot 100 on the 18 Jan 1964 with "I Want To Hold Your Hand". It was released on the Parlophone record label in the UK; which record label was it released on in the USA?

From Quiz That Was The Year That Was: Pop Music 1964

Answer: Capitol

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" written by Lennon/McCartney was released on the Capitol record label in the US. It was number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Beatles in 1964. It was number one for five weeks on the UK singles chart in 1963/64. After a few false dawns in the '50s and early '60s the so called British invasion of the American pop charts began in earnest with The Fab Four in 1964. They were John Lennon (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, lead vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Richard Starkey (drums, vocals), from Liverpool, England. They dominated the pop music charts like no one had before, having the top five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at one point. When you think that before The Beatles, the American charts except for one or two hits, were virtually closed to UK music en masse. Like them or not (and some people didn't) what The Beatles and their music achieved was seismic. Someone in the future may surpass the achievements of The Beatles but they will have to be good. Even as soloists the four members of The Beatles have all had number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Between 1964 and 1969 The Beatles had 33 Top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, 29 of which made the Top Ten, and 18 of those were number one hits. Their records were released in the US on the Vee-Jay, Capitol, Swan, MGM, Atco and Tollie record labels and that was just in 1964. The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

5. The first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964 was 'There! I've Said It Again'. Who was the artist?

From Quiz Billboard Number Ones 1964

Answer: Bobby Vinton

The first of two number ones for Bobby Vinton in 1964, his second hit was the extremely poignant 'Mr Lonely'. *Useless information* 'There! I've Said It Again' was originally made popular in 1945 by Vaughan Monroe. Bobby Vinton was born in Canonsburg Pennsylvania where there are two streets named after him.

6. As usual we start with the first single to reach number one. Staying at number one for two weeks from the 15th January 1964 was 'Glad All Over' by The Dave Clark --- what number followed the name of the group?

From Quiz UK number ones 1964

Answer: 5 & five

'Glad All Over' was the band's only number one hit in the UK and reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. *Useless information* The Dave Clark Five were the second British band to appear on the 'Ed Sullivan Show' after 'Glad All Over' knocked the Beatles 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' off of the UK number one spot. From there they went on to make a further 17 appearances on the the show. In their ten year career they had nine UK Top 20 hits and 14 top 20 hits in the US.

7. In 1964, the single "Chapel of Love" was a top hit for a group called The _____ Cups.

From Quiz Pop Music Hits of 1964

Answer: Dixie

The song "Chapel of Love" was made famous by the group The Dixie Cups in the late spring of 1964. This singing trio was composed of Barbara Ann Hawkins, Rosa Lee Hawkins, and Joan Marie Johnson. 8. Here they come across the sea, who are they and what did they want to do? "Oh please say to me You'll let me be your man"

From Quiz Whose Line Was It Anyway? US Number One Hits 1964

Answer: The Beatles

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" sang The Beatles and racked up the first of 20 US number one hits. It spent seven weeks at number one on the US chart and five weeks at number one on the UK chart. The Rolling Stones had a number six hit on the US pop chart in 1964 with "Time Is On My Side". It was not released as a single during the '60s in the UK. The Searchers had a number 16 hit on the US pop chart in 1964 with "Don't Throw Your Love Away". It was their third and last UK number one hit and spent two weeks at the top. The Dave Clark Five had a number six hit on the US pop chart in 1964 with "Glad All Over". It was their only UK number one hit and spent two weeks at the top.

9. Who could not pay for this at any price, in this song? "I'll give you all I've got to give If you say you love me too"

From Quiz Whose Line Was It Anyway? UK Number One Hits 1964

Answer: The Beatles

"Can't Buy Me Love" sang the fab four, a number one in the UK and US. It was number one when The Beatles held the top five chart places on the US chart in 1964. The Beach Boys finally had a UK top ten hit this year with their US number one "I Get Around". Gerry and The Pacemakers just missed their fourth number one with "I'm The One". It stalled at number two in the UK and only got to number 82 in the US. The Animals had a UK and US number one this year with "The House Of The Rising Sun". It was their only hit to reach the number one spot.

10. Bobby Vinton had his third chart topper the week of January 4, 1964. Which song did he score a number one hit with?

From Quiz Billboard Number 1 Songs of 1964

Answer: There! I've Said It Again

"There! I've Said It Again" was recorded By Bobby Vinton in one take. Remaking the song was suggested to him by a DJ who was the emcee at a Cincinatti rock concert Bobby was doing. It was number one for four weeks. "Since I Fell For You" charted the same week for Lenny Welch at number four. The number five spot was Bobby Rydell's "Forget Him." "Everybody" was a top ten for Tommy Roe the previous month.

11. Which British band had a number one hit with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy"?

From Quiz Hits of 1964

Answer: Manfred Mann

"Do Wah Diddy Diddy" was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and recorded by Manfred Mann. It can be found on the album "The Manfred Mann" (1964). It was a number one hit in the UK and US.

12. The top-ranked song of 1964 scored 1820 points based on a 15 week chart run, 12 of those in the top 10, seven at Number One. Of course it was a Beatles song and only "Hey Jude" in 1968 was a bigger hit for the "mop tops". So... what was it?

From Quiz The Top Hits of 1964

Answer: I Want To Hold Your Hand

Unquestionably one of the biggest hits of all time! Beyond its success in America, it was Number One in Britain and Australia for five weeks and in Canada for six. The Beatles' first Number One hit in Britain was "From Me To You" which topped their charts for seven weeks in May and June of 1963. Prior to Capitol Records securing the distribution rights to Beatle records, "From Me To You" and other songs which had earlier success in the U.K. were released on small U.S. labels like Vee-Jay and Tollie and made no impression on the Billboard charts whatsoever. When it was re-released to the U.S. audience, the best it could do was Number 41 on the charts, swamped by the group's newer releases. With "I Want To Hold Your Hand" leading the way, The Beatles would have a total of 30 songs chart on Billboard's Hot 100 before the end of the year, a truly amazing feat and one that surely will never, ever be matched. Very few recording acts manage that in a career!

13. "Been missing ya, miss kissing ya Instead of breaking up Let's do some kissing and making up" And the title is?

From Quiz The Great Songs of 1964 - Part 3

Answer: Baby Love

"Baby Love" was the second of five consecutive #1 hits the Supremes would record in 1964-5. All were Holland-Dozier-Holland compositions.

14. "My mother was a tailor, she sewed my new blue jeans My father was a gamblin' man down in New Orleans" The title of this classic is?

From Quiz The Great Songs of 1964 - Part 2

Answer: House Of The Rising Sun

A three week #1 for The Animals in September 1964, it was their debut chart hit in North America and although the group would have nine top twenty hits before disbanding in 1968, it would remain their signature song. The lyrics were adapted from an old traditional folk ballad about a prostitute in a brothel. The new rendering about a gambler made it more "radio-worthy"... right to the top of the charts!

15. In January, 1964, a goofy song peaked at #4 on the charts. There wasn't much to it. Almost half the song repeated these words - "Papa-oom-mow-mow, papa-oom-mow-mow". What was the song's title?

From Quiz The Great Songs of 1964 - Part I

Answer: Surfin' Bird

This hit was performed by the Trashmen from the Twin Cities area in Minnesota. Essentially, they combined two songs by the Rivingtons, "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" (a #48 song in 1962)and "The Bird's The Word" (a #52 song in 1963) which composed the other half of "Surfin' Bird" song's lyric. Musical synergy to yield a #4 song in 1964? The Trashmen's follow up number, "Bird Dance Beat" peaked at #30 in March, 1964 and that was it. The cleverer lyrics of the Beatles, "Yeah, yeah, yeah", no doubt contributed to their demise!

16. What was #10 on the countdown for 1964? "I've got this burning, burning, Yearning feelin' inside me. Ooh, deep inside me, And it hurts so bad."

From Quiz BRI's Top Ten Hits of 1964

Answer: Where Did Our Love Go?

Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland Jr., this song was offered to, and turned down by The Marvelettes. It became the first number one hit for The Supremes, three years after they were first signed by Berry Gordy of Motown Records.

17. The Beatles are red hot in 1964. They have the number 1 song. Do you know which song it is?

From Quiz Music From 1964

Answer: "I Want To Hold Your Hand"

"Hey Jude" is the number 1 song in 1968. "Do You Want To Know A Secret" was number 55 in 1964. The Beatles also had the number 2 song, "She Loves You."

18. Where did the girl in 'Leader of the Pack' meet her guy?

From Quiz Hits Of 1964

Answer: candy store

By the Shangri-Las

19. 'In a little cafe just the other side of the border'

From Quiz 1964 Top 40 Hits

Answer: Come a Little Bit Closer

20. Which girl group recorded the 'teenage tragedy' song "Leader of the Pack"?

From Quiz Hits of 1964 - Part 2

Answer: The Shangri-Las

"Leader of the Pack" was recorded by The Shangri-Las and written by George "Shadow" Morton, Jeff Barry, and Ellie Greenwich. It was a number one hit in the US and New Zealand and number eleven in the UK. Cover versions have been recorded by Bette Midler in 1972 and the band Twisted Sister in 1995.

21. The tune "Glad All Over" became the first hit single by a British Invasion band NOT named The Beatles, when it reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in April of 1964. Do you remember the group?

From Quiz How Well Do You Remember 1964?

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

Drummer Dave Clark formed the band in North London, England in 1957. They were originally called The Dave Clark Quintet, but some people were apparently confused by the meaning of quintet, so in 1958 the group changed their name to the much simpler Dave Clark Five. They were the forerunners of the "Tottenham Sound", where the music is more percussion driven. Whereas drummers of the day were almost always placed in the back, with the other band members out front, Clark would occasionally put his drum kit at the front of the stage, with the other musicians standing to the sides or even behind him. "Glad All Over" was the first of 17 top 40 hits the group would have on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1964 and 1967. The Dave Clark Five disbanded in 1970.

22. At number two was a Geordie band, the Animals, with a record that topped the charts both sides of the Atlantic. The record was their version of an old American folk song about life in New Orleans. What was it called?

From Quiz My Birthday Top Ten - 1964

Answer: The House Of The Rising Sun

The original Animals had several hits but within a couple of years bad management ensured that the band was in disarray and they broke up. The lead singer, Eric Burdon, formed a new band, Eric Burdon and The Animals, with a new heavier blues sound, and they moved to San Francisco in 1966. The following year they had their biggest hit in this incarnation with "San Franciscan Nights".

23. Which cast member of "Bonanza" (1959) released the US Number One hit "Ringo" in 1964?

From Quiz One-Word US Top Forty Hits from 1964.

Answer: Lorne Greene

In 1963 Lorne Greene recorded an album for RCA Records titled "Welcome to the Ponderosa". "Ringo" was one of the songs on the album. The lyrics told of a fictional outlaw and his relationship with a lawman. Each song on "Welcome to the Ponderosa" was introduced by a spoken narrative. "Ringo" was subsequently released as a single minus Greene's narrated intro and became a surprise Number One hit on the US Billboard charts. "Ringo" peaked at Number 21 on the US Country charts. The flip-side of "Ringo" was a version of the "Ponderosa" theme with lyrics. In addition to his role on "Bonanza" as Adam along with singing on "Ponderosa" box set compilations Pernell Roberts was an accomplished singer and Broadway actor. Dan Blocker and Micheal Landon did not seriously pursue musical careers.

Answer: 11 weeks

The longest run for the Beatles was five weeks with the song 'I Feel Fine', this reached number one on the 10th December and stayed there until 14th January 1965. Their other two number ones were 'A Hard Day's Night' and 'Can't Buy Me Love' which both stayed on the top spot for three weeks. *Useless information* 'Can't Buy Me Love' is the only single recorded by the Beatles (in English) that was not recorded in the UK (it was recorded in France in January 1964). It is also one of only a small number of records by the Beatles that were recorded in German. 'A Hard Day's Night' holds the distinction of being the first album and single combination to take all four number one spots in both the UK album and singles charts AND the US album and singles charts at the same time.

From Quiz The Great Songs of 1964 - Part 3

Answer: Diddy Diddy

This was #1 for a couple of weeks in October 1964 for Manfred Mann, a rock band formed in England earlier that year. It seems to me that the song was reprised in the movie "Stripes" in 1981 and it was referred to as "The Theme From Stripes". However, I can find no corroboration that this was the case. Did I dream this up?
