10CC Trivia Questions

1. 10cc's first UK hit had the same title as the 1958 US hit by Ritchie Valens but was a different song. What is the song title?

From Quiz
The Music of 10cc

Answer: Donna

"Donna" written by Kevin Godley/Lol Creme was a number two hit on the UK singles chart for 10cc in 1972. It did not chart in the US. 10cc were Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart. All members of the group were multi-instrumentalists, producers, singers and song writers. All except Eric Stewart were childhood friends and they first connected musically in 1964. After being in various groups they all recorded together for some time before coming together as 10cc in 1972.

2. The original members of the band, Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, were linked together from an early age, often appearing in each other's bands. They were involved in the genesis of which Stockport recording studio?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Strawberry Studios

Gouldman was a prolific songwriter even as a teenager, writing songs such as the Yardbirds' "For Your Love", "Look Through Any Window" for the Hollies and "No Milk Today" for Herman's Hermits. His skills attracted a recording contract and the studios were used to make many bubblegum pop hits of the 60s. Neil Sedaka recorded his "Solitaire" and "The Tra La Days Are Over" albums here, too!

3. 10cc's first UK number one hit was named after a latex projectile. Can you name it?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: Rubber Bullets

"Rubber Bullets" was a number one hit for one week on the UK singles chart in 1973. It reached number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. Although the BBC didn't ban the record they limited its airplay. This was because of the ongoing conflict in Northern Ireland at the time and the British Army's use of rubber bullets to quell rioting. The song written by Kevin Godley, Lol Creme and Graham Gouldman, was in fact about the riot at the Attica Correctional Facility, in Attica, New York, USA, in 1971.

4. Gouldman temporarily moved to New York while Godley, Creme and Stewart continued to record singles at the studio, forming a proto-10cc. This band had a hit with "Neanderthal Man" in 1970. What was the band called?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Hotlegs

"Neanderthal Man" reached number 2 in the UK charts, and was released by Fontana Records. The trio released another song "Umbopo" as Doctor Father shortly after. Gouldman, more in demand for his song-writing skills than for his performance, had moved to New York while the others remained at Strawberry Studios. He later returned to support Hotlegs on tour after their first album "Thinks: School Stinks".

5. I'd ask you where the name 10cc came from, but its rude origin has been disputed by some of the band members. Instead, can you name their first single?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Donna

"Donna" is their hysterical doo-wop parody which hit number 2 in the charts. In the 2007 Graham Gouldman and Friends tour, the song was given a modern treatment - after the line "Donna is waiting for the phone to ring", instead of the old telephone ring, the song stops while somebody answers a mobile phone. Good to know the boys never lost their wit.

6. What were 10cc doing on Wall Street?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: The Wall Street Shuffle

"The Wall Street Shuffle" was a number ten hit on the UK singles chart for 10cc in 1974. It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. "The Wall Street Shuffle" was written by Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman. It was on their 1974 album "Sheet Music" and was the most successful single released from the album. Bringing together Yen, Buck, Mark, Getty, Rothschild and Howard Hughes in a song about Wall Street, was just brilliant.

7. 10cc's first album yielded 5 singles in total, including the number 1 hit "Rubber Bullets". What was it called?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: 10cc

I can't blame them for wanting an eponymous album. Most of their music was released under other people's names until that point.

8. Which kind of soup did 10cc compare life with in one of their songs?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: Minestrone

"Life Is A Minestrone" was a number seven hit on the UK singles chart in 1975. It did not chart in the US. It was written by Lol Creme/Eric Stewart after listening to a radio talk show. They were driving home after recording at their own Strawberry Studios. They thought they heard someone say "Life Is A Minestrone" on the radio and thought it would make a great title for a song.

9. Between albums, 10cc released their sixth single "The Worst Band in the World". What was notable about this song?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: The BBC refused airplay

"There's one thing to know it and another to admit We're the worst band in the world and we don't give a..." Implied swear words were pretty offensive for Auntie Beeb in 1974. They created a radio-friendly version, but it was too little, too late and the single flopped.

10. What is the missing word in these lyrics from the song "I'm Not In Love" "I'm not in love So don't forget it It's just a silly ____ I'm going through"

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: phase

"I'm Not In Love" was the second number one hit for 10cc. It was number one for two weeks on the UK singles chart in 1975. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. "I'm Not In Love" was written by Graham Gouldman/Eric Stewart. The song has been described as the slowest number one and has been regarded by many people over the years as a pop masterpiece. The wall of voices effect on the record was created by multiple overdubbing of the groups voices singing a single note together. Altogether the process produced 256 voices that sounded like a choir.

11. 10cc follow up their strong debut with "Sheet Music" in 1974, featuring the hit "The Wall Street Shuffle". Who designed the artwork on this and subsequent albums such as "The Original Soundtrack"?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Hipgnosis

They created Pink Floyd's famous "The Dark Side of the Moon" cover as well as many others. "Sheet Music" was the last 10cc album released by Jonathan King's UK Records (King being responsible for the 10cc name) before switching to Mercury. As a result, CD copies of "10cc" and "Sheet Music" are hard to come by, leading some mistaken fans to credit "The Original Soundtrack" as the first Hipgnosis-designed album.

12. A guitar attachment called the Gizmotron invented by group members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme was first heard on a 10cc B-Side "Gismo My Way" and on their second album. What is the title of that album released in 1974?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: Sheet Music

The album "Sheet Music" gave 10cc a number nine hit on the UK album chart in 1974. It reached number 81 on the Billboard album chart the same year. "Gismo My Way" was the instrumental B-Side of the 1974 hit "The Wall Street Shuffle". The Gizmotron device was a small box which attached to the bridge of a guitar. It consisted of six small motor driven wheels with serrated edges. They were activated by pressing one or more of the keys located on the top of the device. That allowed the wheels to descend against a motor driven shaft and bow the strings. The sound was affected by the type of guitar strings being used. The device was difficult to use and parts were not replaceable; by the end of the '70s Gizmotronics set up by Musitronics to produce the Gizmotron went bankrupt and the project was abandoned.

13. After "Sheet Music", 10cc recorded "The Original Soundtrack" containing possibly their most famous song and number 1 hit, "I'm Not In Love". How were the ground-breaking choral sounds produced?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Multi-tracking onto 16-track tape and looping the band's voices

Digital samplers didn't even exist until 1976, a year after this song was made. The band sang a note in unison on multiple tracks which were then mixed down onto a single track of 16-track tape. Repeat several times and you have a lush 256-voice choir. The process was laborious to say the least, but well worth the effort.

14. Which James Bond Movie starring Sean Connery is mentioned in the song "I'm Mandy Fly Me"?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: Dr. No

"I'm Mandy Fly Me" written by Stewart/Gouldman/Godley was a number six hit for 10cc on the UK singles chart in 1976. It reached number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. The song lyrics containing the movie title are as follows: "I saw her walking on the water As the sharks were comin' for me I felt Mandy pull me up give me the kiss of life Just like the girl in Dr. No, No, No, No"

15. In "I'm Not In Love", the only female voice in the song says "Be quiet, big boys don't cry". What relation is the female to the band?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: The receptionist at the recording studio

The voice belonged to Kathy Redfern, receptionist at Strawberry Studios. Apparently Lol Creme wanted to say this line in a whisper, but the band had other ideas. Kevin Godley does do a mean falsetto, though.

16. Drummer Kevin Godley and guitarist Lol Creme left 10cc in 1976. What was the title of the first 10cc hit without them?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: The Things We Do For Love

"The Things We Do For Love" was a number six hit for 10cc on the UK singles chart in 1976. It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left 10cc after differences between them and Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman became more apparent during the recording of the album "How Dare You" in 1976. They went on to produce the three album set "Consequences" in 1977 and had two UK Top Ten singles in 1981. Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart recruited drummer Paul Burgess and carried on as 10cc, a three piece band. Their first album after Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left was "Deceptive Bends". It was named after a road sign that used to be on the southbound A24 road between Leatherhead and Dorking in Surrey, England.

17. 1976 brings "How Dare You!", the last album with 10cc's original line-up. The intro of "I'm Mandy Fly Me" samples which earlier 10cc song?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Clockwork Creep

The "Clockwork Creep" is a ticking bomb set to detonate on a plane. The song suggests the plane will crash, just like the plane in "I'm Mandy Fly Me". A continuation of the story, perhaps.

18. "I don't like cricket", "I don't like reggae", "Don't like Jamaica"? What are 10cc singing about here?

From Quiz The Music of 10cc

Answer: Dreadlock Holiday

"Dreadlock Holiday" was a number one hit for one week on the UK singles chart for 10cc in 1978. It reached number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. "Dreadlock Holiday" was written by Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman. It was the first track on their 1978 album "Bloody Tourists". The events that unfold in the song are based on the actual experiences of The Moody Blues singer Justin Hayward and 10cc's Eric Stewart while on holiday in the Caribbean. This was the third and last UK number one hit for 10cc. It also proved to be their last UK Top 20 hit.

19. Godley & Creme left 10cc to work on their own experimental projects using the Gizmo, a device that modified the sound of a guitar to try and emulate an orchestra. They eventually came up with a massive triple LP called...

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Consequences

The concept album in the form of a play features Peter Cook and vocals from Sarah Vaughan. It received poor reviews and little commercial success, its sheer length doing it no favours.

20. Godley & Creme moved on from their disastrous first album to make many successful hits (and some not-so-successful ones). The duo began moving away from making albums and into what?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Music videos

They were responsible for videos like "Every Breath You Take", "Girls On Film" and "Two Tribes", as well as their own "Cry" featuring faces that constantly morphed into other faces. Their final album together was "Goodbye Blue Sky" in 1988, notable for its extensive use of harmonicas throughout.

21. During a 9-year break from 10cc, Graham Gouldman produced several albums, and teamed up with which American singer/songwriter to form Wax?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Andrew Gold

Albums include the aptly-named "American English", featuring the hit single "Bridge To Your Heart". (Hope you didn't pick Paul!)

22. The year is 2004 and things are not over. Which band members joined forces to write songs together?

From Quiz 10cc: Neanderthal Men or Bloody Tourists?

Answer: Godley & Gouldman

GG06 is the name of this joint venture, which so far has produced 6 publicly-available songs. Kevin Godley appeared at some of the dates in Gouldman's 2007 tour, making it the most complete incarnation of 10cc to tour since their breakup. Lol Creme was a member of the Art of Noise in 1998-1999, before joining the Producers in 2006 with fellow band-mate and producer Trevor Horn. Eric Stewart has been recording solo albums since 1980 and continues to do so.
