Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original members of the band, Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, were linked together from an early age, often appearing in each other's bands. They were involved in the genesis of which Stockport recording studio?

Answer: Strawberry Studios

Gouldman was a prolific songwriter even as a teenager, writing songs such as the Yardbirds' "For Your Love", "Look Through Any Window" for the Hollies and "No Milk Today" for Herman's Hermits. His skills attracted a recording contract and the studios were used to make many bubblegum pop hits of the 60s. Neil Sedaka recorded his "Solitaire" and "The Tra La Days Are Over" albums here, too!
2. Gouldman temporarily moved to New York while Godley, Creme and Stewart continued to record singles at the studio, forming a proto-10cc. This band had a hit with "Neanderthal Man" in 1970. What was the band called?

Answer: Hotlegs

"Neanderthal Man" reached number 2 in the UK charts, and was released by Fontana Records. The trio released another song "Umbopo" as Doctor Father shortly after. Gouldman, more in demand for his song-writing skills than for his performance, had moved to New York while the others remained at Strawberry Studios.

He later returned to support Hotlegs on tour after their first album "Thinks: School Stinks".
3. I'd ask you where the name 10cc came from, but its rude origin has been disputed by some of the band members. Instead, can you name their first single?

Answer: Donna

"Donna" is their hysterical doo-wop parody which hit number 2 in the charts. In the 2007 Graham Gouldman and Friends tour, the song was given a modern treatment - after the line "Donna is waiting for the phone to ring", instead of the old telephone ring, the song stops while somebody answers a mobile phone. Good to know the boys never lost their wit.
4. 10cc's first album yielded 5 singles in total, including the number 1 hit "Rubber Bullets". What was it called?

Answer: 10cc

I can't blame them for wanting an eponymous album. Most of their music was released under other people's names until that point.
5. Between albums, 10cc released their sixth single "The Worst Band in the World". What was notable about this song?

Answer: The BBC refused airplay

"There's one thing to know it and another to admit
We're the worst band in the world and we don't give a..."

Implied swear words were pretty offensive for Auntie Beeb in 1974. They created a radio-friendly version, but it was too little, too late and the single flopped.
6. 10cc follow up their strong debut with "Sheet Music" in 1974, featuring the hit "The Wall Street Shuffle". Who designed the artwork on this and subsequent albums such as "The Original Soundtrack"?

Answer: Hipgnosis

They created Pink Floyd's famous "The Dark Side of the Moon" cover as well as many others. "Sheet Music" was the last 10cc album released by Jonathan King's UK Records (King being responsible for the 10cc name) before switching to Mercury. As a result, CD copies of "10cc" and "Sheet Music" are hard to come by, leading some mistaken fans to credit "The Original Soundtrack" as the first Hipgnosis-designed album.
7. After "Sheet Music", 10cc recorded "The Original Soundtrack" containing possibly their most famous song and number 1 hit, "I'm Not In Love". How were the ground-breaking choral sounds produced?

Answer: Multi-tracking onto 16-track tape and looping the band's voices

Digital samplers didn't even exist until 1976, a year after this song was made. The band sang a note in unison on multiple tracks which were then mixed down onto a single track of 16-track tape. Repeat several times and you have a lush 256-voice choir. The process was laborious to say the least, but well worth the effort.
8. In "I'm Not In Love", the only female voice in the song says "Be quiet, big boys don't cry". What relation is the female to the band?

Answer: The receptionist at the recording studio

The voice belonged to Kathy Redfern, receptionist at Strawberry Studios. Apparently Lol Creme wanted to say this line in a whisper, but the band had other ideas. Kevin Godley does do a mean falsetto, though.
9. 1976 brings "How Dare You!", the last album with 10cc's original line-up. The intro of "I'm Mandy Fly Me" samples which earlier 10cc song?

Answer: Clockwork Creep

The "Clockwork Creep" is a ticking bomb set to detonate on a plane. The song suggests the plane will crash, just like the plane in "I'm Mandy Fly Me". A continuation of the story, perhaps.
10. Godley & Creme left 10cc to work on their own experimental projects using the Gizmo, a device that modified the sound of a guitar to try and emulate an orchestra. They eventually came up with a massive triple LP called...

Answer: Consequences

The concept album in the form of a play features Peter Cook and vocals from Sarah Vaughan. It received poor reviews and little commercial success, its sheer length doing it no favours.
11. Godley & Creme moved on from their disastrous first album to make many successful hits (and some not-so-successful ones). The duo began moving away from making albums and into what?

Answer: Music videos

They were responsible for videos like "Every Breath You Take", "Girls On Film" and "Two Tribes", as well as their own "Cry" featuring faces that constantly morphed into other faces. Their final album together was "Goodbye Blue Sky" in 1988, notable for its extensive use of harmonicas throughout.
12. Despite the loss of Godley & Creme, 10cc moved onwards. Stewart and Gouldman added Paul Burgess to assist with "Deceptive Bends", then enlisted Rick Fenn, Stuart Tosh and Duncan Mackay for "Bloody Tourists". Which number 1 hit did this incarnation of 10cc create? (You may hear it at cricket matches)

Answer: Dreadlock Holiday

Stuart Tosh was a member of Pilot. Burgess and Fenn have toured with Gouldman since 2000.
13. During a 9-year break from 10cc, Graham Gouldman produced several albums, and teamed up with which American singer/songwriter to form Wax?

Answer: Andrew Gold

Albums include the aptly-named "American English", featuring the hit single "Bridge To Your Heart". (Hope you didn't pick Paul!)
14. Ok, so "How Dare You!" wasn't actually the original lineup's final album. Contractual obligations forced Godley & Creme back into the studio in 1992 to produce 10cc's first album in 9 years. Gary Katz of Steely Dan fame produced this album. Paul McCartney even lent a helping hand writing one of the songs. What was this album called?

Answer: ...Meanwhile

Andrew Gold of Wax also makes an appearance here. Paul McCartney performed on the band's final album "Mirror Mirror". Godley and Creme did not.
15. The year is 2004 and things are not over. Which band members joined forces to write songs together?

Answer: Godley & Gouldman

GG06 is the name of this joint venture, which so far has produced 6 publicly-available songs. Kevin Godley appeared at some of the dates in Gouldman's 2007 tour, making it the most complete incarnation of 10cc to tour since their breakup. Lol Creme was a member of the Art of Noise in 1998-1999, before joining the Producers in 2006 with fellow band-mate and producer Trevor Horn. Eric Stewart has been recording solo albums since 1980 and continues to do so.
