From Quiz
Diseases and Ailments in the Bible

Answer: Ashes

After Moses tossed ashes into the air, the sixth of ten plagues was officially unleashed on the Egyptians. 2. Scripture tells of Eve eating forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil with her husband Adam following suit. What went wrong?

From Quiz Wondering What Went Wrong With Whatever

Answer: Adam and Eve were ordered out of the Garden of Eden.

After Adam and Eve ate forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they were removed from the Garden of Eden by God. Scripture states a serpent, usually regarded as Satan, convinced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Later, Adam followed Eve's advice and also ate the fruit. See Genesis 3:1-24 for details.

3. The first detailed song in the Bible is found in the book of Exodus. Who led the Israelites in this song found in Chapter 15 verse 1-18?

From Quiz Praise the Lord!

Answer: Moses

"I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea." These are the opening lines of what is commonly referred to as the Song of Moses. It goes on from verse 1 to 18 of Chapter 15 in Exodus. The Israelites had just escaped from the clutches of the Egyptians by walking across the Red Sea and when the Egyptian soldiers tried to follow them, the waters closed over them and drowned them. Moses then leads the Israelites in song to praise and thank God. Later Miriam, the sister of Moses, took up the timbrel and led the women and sang - "Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea."

4. According to Genesis 37:35, who broke down weeping when he was told his son Joseph was dead?

From Quiz Weeping and Tears in the Bible -- #1

Answer: Jacob

Jacob is the correct answer. After Joseph's brothers sold him for twenty pieces of silver to Midianite traders, they took his tunic and smeared some blood from a goat on it. The brothers then took the blood-smeared tunic and showed it to their father Jacob, stating Joseph had been slain by a wild beast. According to Scripture, Jacob was overcome with grief. Genesis 37:35 states Jacob wept for Joseph and refused to be comforted by his family members. The verse quotes Jacob as saying, "For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning."

5. Who was told by God to put his hand in his cloak and when he took it out, it was "leprous, like snow"?

From Quiz Lepers and Leprosy in the Bible

Answer: Moses

According to Scripture, Moses temporarily had leprosy on his hand after he had requested God to give him a miraculous sign to show the Pharaoh as he prepared to request permission for the Israelites to make a mass exodus out of Egypt. According to Scripture, Moses was given three signs to show the Pharaoh. The first sign involved turning a rod into a serpent when it was cast on the ground. As a precursor to the second sign, God asked Moses to put his hand in his cloak and when he pulled it out was "leprous, like snow." The third sign involved taking water from the Nile River and pouring it on dry land, with the water turning into blood. Details can be found in Exodus 4:1-9.

6. In Numbers 12:10, who is described as having become leprous as a result of displeasing the Lord?

From Quiz They Were Sick in the Bible!

Answer: Miriam

Numbers 12:1-15 describes how Aaron and Miriam spoke against Moses after he married an Ethiopian woman, and questioned if they were not also recipients of the word of the Lord. The Lord showed his displeasure by inflicting leprosy upon Miriam, but after entreaties from both Moses and Aaron relented, and settled on banishment from the camp for seven days as her punishment.

7. Who fell down at a king's feet "and implored him with tears" to counteract an evil man?

From Quiz For Crying Out Loud: A Quiz About Biblical Tears

Answer: Esther

Esther is the correct answer, as per Esther 8:3. Scripture states Esther "implored" King Ahasuerus with "tears" to prevent Haman from carrying out a diabolical plan to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.) Scripture goes on to tell of Esther being successful in her effort to save the Jews from mass genocide with Haman being hanged on gallows he had specially built for the execution of Mordecai. Mordecai was Esther's cousin, who played a pivotal role with Esther in stopping Haman from carrying out his scheme.

8. Which major prophet wished that his head were waters and his eyes a fountain of tears that he might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of his people?

From Quiz Why Cry, My Friend?

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah is sometimes referred to as the weeping prophet. He was told in his prophetic call that he was ordained before his birth to 'root out and to pull down, and to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant'. In Jeremiah 9:1 he bewails or laments the sins of the people. He continues in the rest of the chapter to show the calamities which will come upon Jerusalem as a result of their disobedience to God.

9. In the Old Testament God brought the sickness of leprosy on this woman because she dared to speak against His servant (her brother). Who was she?

From Quiz Who Was Sick in the Bible?

Answer: Miriam

Moses had married an Ethiopian woman which led Miriam and Aaron to speak against him. God's anger was fierce against them and Miriam became a leper. Moses requested instant healing for her but God told him that she should be shut out of the camp for seven days. The journey of the Israelites was halted until the seven days were finished and Miriam was received into the camp again. (Numbers 12)

10. What was the first thing cursed in the Bible?

From Quiz CURSES!

Answer: the serpent in Eden

Genesis 3:14 - "So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life." (NIV) This refers to the serpent tempting man into sin by eating from the tree of knowledge. This is followed by God cursing the ground because of Adam's sin in Genesis 3:17, "Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, you must not eat from it. Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life."

11. What was the ailment of the man that came before Jesus in Luke 14:2?

From Quiz Ailments and Diseases in the Bible

Answer: dropsy

Jesus used the healing of this man to teach whether it was lawful by Jewish regulations to heal on the Sabbath. Now known as edema, dropsy is the accumulation of fluid in body tissues causing swelling.

12. "But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great..." To whom was Jesus speaking these words in Luke 6:35?

From Quiz Love Changes Everything

Answer: a great multitude

Not only were all of Jesus' disciples present on this occasion, but preceding this text in verse 17 the King James Version states, "And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him..." The area of Tyre and Sidon denotes modern-day Lebanon, so there were non-Jewish people in the crowd, along with folks from Judea and from Jerusalem as well. His disciples were addressed in vs. 20-24, but this verse seems to indicate that he was speaking to the entire crowd. Beginning with the 27th verse, he states; "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you," and that is soon followed by the statement found in the question.

13. "You shall also love the _______, for you were _______ (s) in the land of Egypt." To whom is Moses referring in this verse from the book of Deuteronomy?

From Quiz Love Is All Around!

Answer: stranger

In Deuteronomy 10:19, Moses reminds the Israelites that they, too, were strangers in the land of Egypt and he is very clear that they are brought to the Promised Land, not on their own merit, but because of God's love for them. In this passage, Moses charges us that God, who "executes justice for the orphan and the widow" and provides food and clothing to strangers, expects the same of us.

14. In the book of Isaiah it is written that the Lord spoke to the house of David. The Lord wanted the house of David to have more of this quality with other men and especially with Him. The word I'm looking for describes someone who endures calmly.

From Quiz All That Love Is and Is Not

Answer: patience

It has long been said "patience is a virtue". The Bible mentions patience multiple times. The first thing Paul tells the Corinthians is that love is patient. God spoke to the house of David about patience in Isaiah 7:13.

15. According to 1 Samuel 5:6, what afflicted the Philistines after they captured the ark of God?

From Quiz Diseases and Ailments in the Bible

Answer: Tumors

After capturing the ark of God from the Israelites, 1 Samuel 5:6 states the Philistines were afflicted with tumors. Scripture goes on to tell of the Philistines taking the ark of God to Gath, where people were also afflicted with tumors. 1 Samuel 6 states the people had suffered so much they decided to return the ark of God to the Israelites.

16. According to Scripture, Jacob and Laban came up with a plan in which he would be able to marry Rachel if he worked seven years for Laban. What went wrong?

From Quiz Wondering What Went Wrong With Whatever

Answer: After seven years were up, Jacob was still unable to marry Rachel.

True to his promise, Jacob worked seven years for Laban to win the hand of his daughter Rachel. However, when the seven years were up, Laban gave Jacob his oldest daughter Leah as a bride. This, even though, Jacob had no feelings for Leah and Rachel was the one he deeply loved. Laban, however, passed things off, saying it was not the custom of his people to give the younger daughter for marriage before the older one. Laban then convinced Jacob to work an additional seven years to win Rachel's hand. See Genesis 29:15-30 for details.

17. Who broke down crying thinking her young son would die of thirst in the wilderness? (Genesis 21:16)

From Quiz Weeping and Tears in the Bible -- #1

Answer: Hagar

Hagar, the mother of Ishmael and the concubine of Jacob, is the correct answer. Scripture tells of Abraham ordering Hagar and Ishmael out of his house, providing them with only some bread and a skin of water. After the water was used up, Hagar feared her son would die. According to Genesis 21:16, she lifted her voice and wept. Scripture goes on to tell of an angel calling out to Hagar and God opening her eyes, with a well miraculously appearing in her sight.

18. Who was struck with leprosy after he/she complained about Moses' Ethiopian wife? (Numbers 12:10)

From Quiz Lepers and Leprosy in the Bible

Answer: Miriam

Miriam was afflicted with leprosy, but ended up being cleansed and re-instated into the Israelite camp seven days later. According to the KJV and the NKJV, the grumbling about her brother Moses' selection of an Ethiopian woman as his wife caused serious problems for Miriam. (The NIV uses the word Cushite, rather than Ethiopian.) Details about her grumbling, as well as that of Aaron, are found in Numbers 12:1. No name is given for Moses' Ethiopian wife. Numbers 12:5 tells of Miriam and Aaron stepping forward and the LORD coming down in a pillar of cloud. When the pillar of the cloud had disappeared, Aaron noticed his sister Miriam was leprous and "as white as snow". After Moses pleaded to God to cure Miriam of her leprosy, she was cleansed and reinstated into the Israelite camp after a seven-day absence. The fact Miriam's name appears before Aaron seems to indicate she was complaining much more than Aaron. No one knows for certain, but many theologians believe Miriam was the one who watched from a distance when Moses was placed in a basket along the banks of the Nile River, as per Exodus 2:4. Miriam is known for leading a victory song by the women after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. According to Exodus 15:20, she took a tambourine in her hand and "all the women followed her with, tambourines and dancing."

19. Whose prayers, along with those of Eli, a priest, were answered when her barrenness was taken away and she was able to conceive a man-child? (I Sam 1:9-20)

From Quiz They Were Sick in the Bible!

Answer: Hannah

Hannah was the second, much loved, wife of Elkanah, and despaired that she could not give him a son. Her own prayers to have this affliction removed were bolstered by those of the priest, Eli, and in due course she bore a son whom she named Samuel, "...saying, Because I asked him of the Lord."

20. A man in the Old Testament is quoted as stating, "My friends scorn me; my eyes pour out tears to God." What was the man's name?

From Quiz For Crying Out Loud: A Quiz About Biblical Tears

Answer: Job

Job, a man of tremendous patience, is the correct answer. He is quoted as saying he was scorned by his friends and his eyes poured out tears to God in Job 16:20. Job, according to Scripture, was a man of immense wealth whose life was turned upside down when a series of calamities struck him. Job 1 reports his seven sons and three daughters were killed, his health deteriorated and his immense wealth evaporated with his wife saying he should curse God and die. Three friends joined Job -- Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite -- in an attempt to comfort him but they only made matters worse by pointing an accusing finger at him. Later a fourth friend, Elihu, would visit. Job, however, remained patient though his horrific suffering. The book of Job has a happy ending with Scripture saying his life was immensely blessed in his later years.

21. This woman died when she was 127 years old and her husband wept over her. She was buried in the cave in the field of Machpelah. Who was her weeping husband?

From Quiz Why Cry, My Friend?

Answer: Abraham

Sarah's death is recorded in Genesis 23. She died in Hebron in the land of Canaan. Abraham mourned and wept for her. After he had made an end of his weeping he made a request to acquire the field of Machpelah for a possession of a burying place. His wish was granted because he was regarded as a mighty prince among them. At his death he was buried by his sons in the same cave. (Gen.25:8-9)

22. A little maid who had been taken captive from Israel by the Syrians told her mistress about a certain prophet in Samaria who could heal her master of his illness. Which mighty captain of Syria's host needed healing?

From Quiz Who Was Sick in the Bible?

Answer: Naaman

Naaman was mighty in his exploits for the King of Syria but he was smitten by a disease which his might could not conquer. On hearing about Elisha, he travelled with great expectancy to Israel but Elisha just sent out a messenger to tell him to dip seven times in River Jordan. Despite his great anger that Elisha had not treated the situation as he had envisioned he obeyed the instructions and received his miracle. His flesh was restored and he recognized the greatness of God. (II Kings 5: 1-16)

23. To whom was this said? "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

From Quiz CURSES!

Answer: Jacob

Genesis 27 relates how Jacob deceived Isaac into giving him the elder son's blessing by disguising himself as Esau. The ruse was successful and Isaac blessed Jacob instead of Esau. It was through Jacob's son Judah that the Messianic line descended. Genesis 17:29 is the specific verse cited (NIV)

24. In the fifth chapter of 1 Samuel (King James Version), what ailment did the Philistines suffer after they captured the Ark of the Covenant?

From Quiz Ailments and Diseases in the Bible

Answer: emerods

In this passage, the Philistines captured the Ark in battle and took it to the temple of their god, Dagon, in Ashdod. After this, the statue of Dagon was found toppled over twice and the people were smitten with emerods. The Philistine leaders then decided to send the Ark back to the Hebrews. Bible scholars believe that emerods probably refer to hemorrhoids, a painful condition of the lower intestine.

25. Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel, loved a woman so much that he worked for her father for a total of 14 years to obtain her as his wife. What was this woman's name?

From Quiz Love Changes Everything

Answer: Rachel

According to the 29th chapter of Genesis, Jacob worked for his mother's brother, Laban, for seven years with the understanding that upon completion of his indentured servitude that he would be granted Rachel as his wife. Laban did not live up to his end of the bargain, so Jacob continued working for another seven years for her. Ironically, Jacob had misled his father, many years previously, so when the deception of Laban became apparent, I've often wondered if Jacob remembered his own earlier deception.

26. In the book of Exodus chapter 1, God was nice and good to the Hebrew midwives of Egypt and blessed them with many births. What is another word that describes love and how God was toward the Jews in Egypt?

From Quiz All That Love Is and Is Not

Answer: kind

Paul tells the Corinthians the second trait of love is kindness. Without kindness, it would be very hard to show love toward anyone. After God blessed the Jews by multiplying their numbers, the Pharaoh commanded all newborn Jewish sons to be cast into the Nile. In Exodus 2, Levi's daughter loved her son, Moses, too much to cast him into the Nile, so she saved him by placing him in a wicker basket and floating him down the river, where he was later found by the Pharaoh's daughter, who raised him. Love through kindness saved Moses from the wrath of Pharaoh.

27. This man's father greatly favored him, which angered his brothers. They plotted against him and had him kidnapped. They thought him dead, but really he was an aide to the king. He was able to interpret the king's dreams.

Answer: Joseph

Joseph was favored by his father, which made his brothers jealous. They plotted to have him killed, but he was not. Instead he was greatly blessed by the Lord and later helped his family during the great famine. The story of Joseph begins in Genesis 37. From Quiz Diseases and Ailments in the Bible

29. Scripture tells of Jonah going on a sailing ship to escape from God and avoid divine instructions to go to Nineveh to preach to the people. What went wrong?

From Quiz Wondering What Went Wrong With Whatever
