Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great..." To whom was Jesus speaking these words in Luke 6:35?

Answer: a great multitude

Not only were all of Jesus' disciples present on this occasion, but preceding this text in verse 17 the King James Version states, "And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him..."

The area of Tyre and Sidon denotes modern-day Lebanon, so there were non-Jewish people in the crowd, along with folks from Judea and from Jerusalem as well. His disciples were addressed in vs. 20-24, but this verse seems to indicate that he was speaking to the entire crowd.

Beginning with the 27th verse, he states; "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you," and that is soon followed by the statement found in the question.
2. Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel, loved a woman so much that he worked for her father for a total of 14 years to obtain her as his wife. What was this woman's name?

Answer: Rachel

According to the 29th chapter of Genesis, Jacob worked for his mother's brother, Laban, for seven years with the understanding that upon completion of his indentured servitude that he would be granted Rachel as his wife. Laban did not live up to his end of the bargain, so Jacob continued working for another seven years for her.

Ironically, Jacob had misled his father, many years previously, so when the deception of Laban became apparent, I've often wondered if Jacob remembered his own earlier deception.
3. In the King James Bible, there is a scripture found that addresses the love of fellow believers. Can you tell me in which New Testament book the following admonition is found? "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

Answer: 1 Peter 1

In the 1st chapter of the 1st book of Peter, he addresses the early church believers that were located in Asia Minor, telling them how they ought to care for one another.
4. In the New Testament book of 1st John chapter 4, why are we told that perfect love has no fear attached to it?

Answer: because there is torment in fear

John uses this opportunity to expound upon Jesus as the Son of God, and in verses 18 and 19 he states, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us."

(King James Version)
5. What very wise person in the Bible once noted that, "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned." (meaning "despised")

Answer: Solomon

This passage, found in the 8th chapter of the Song of Solomon, is often seen to be representative of pure love.
6. The Old Testament book of Leviticus and the New Testament book of Romans both have something very similar to say regarding love. What is the essence of both passages of scripture?

Answer: people should love their fellow man in order to fulfill God's law

Romans 13:8-10 says "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

This is almost an exact echo of the scripture that can be found in Leviticus 19:17-18; "Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD."
7. God's love for man preceded man's love for God, according to scripture found in 1 John 4:8-10.

Answer: True

"He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

1 John 4:8-10
(King James Version)
8. What was the name of King David's son whom he loved so much that upon the son's death the king wept bitterly over his murder, wailing, "...would God I had died for thee, O ---- , my son, my son!" (2 Samuel 18 - King James Version)

Answer: Absalom

"And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away. And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground?"
...
"Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him."
...
"And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!"

The full account of this may be found in 2 Samuel 18.
9. In the New Testament book of Ephesians, chapter 5, how are husbands supposed to love their wives?

Answer: as Christ loved the church

The King James rendition of Ephesians 5:25 and 28 reads as follows:

25:"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."

28:"So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself."
10. Probably one of the most oft-quoted Biblical scriptures is John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Who was doing the speaking and who was on the other end of this conversation?

Answer: Jesus speaking to Nicodemus

At the beginning of the 3rd chapter of John, we see that a man of the Jewish Sanhedrin (the political and religious leadership), Nicodemus, had sought out Jesus in order to ask him some questions.

Their conversation is recorded from that point on until the 21st verse of the same chapter.
