Burnley's FA Cup run in season 1913-14 began with consecutive home wins over South Shields, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers. They needed a replay to see off Sunderland in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final against Sheffield United. A 0-0 draw at Old Trafford was followed by a 1-0 win at Goodison Park in the replay, to send Burnley through to the final. The match, at the Crystal Palace in London, resulted in a 1-0 win over Liverpool, with Bert Freeman scoring the game's only goal.

John Haworth was manager of Burnley between 1910 and 1924, leading them to FA Cup success in 1914 as well as the 1921 league championship. He sadly died of pneumonia in December, 1924, aged just 48, whilst still the club's manager.

Season 1986-87 saw an incredible finish to the Division Four campaign, with three clubs, Burnley, Lincoln City and Torquay United, separated by two points at the bottom going into the final round of fixtures. Burnley were bottom so it was out of their hands, but they took care of their own business by beating Orient 2-0. Lincoln City lost at Swansea City, but would still have stayed up if Torquay lost at home to Crewe. Incredibly, Torquay recovered from 0-2 down to draw 2-2, with the equalising goal coming deep into stoppage time after the game was delayed due to a Torquay player being bitten by a police dog!
