Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Burnley FC, founded in 1882, were one of the 12 founding members of The Football League upon it s formation in 1888.

Answer: True

Burnley FC were founded by members of a local rugby team in 1882, who decided they wanted to play soccer instead. When The Football League was founded in 1888, Burnley were one of the original 12 members.
2. One year after their foundation, Burnley moved into which stadium, which has been their home ever since?

Answer: Turf Moor

After a single season at Calder Vale, Burnley moved into Turf Moot in 1883. A record attendance for the stadium was set in 1924 when 54,755 crammed into the ground to watch a game against Huddersfield Town. Ground renovations and modern safety restrictions meant that the capacity in the early 2020s was 21,944.
3. Burnley have a number of local rivals in the Lancashre area, but which one do they share their fiercest rivalry with, against whom they contest the "East Lancashire derby"?

Answer: Blackburn Rovers

Lancashire, along with neighbouring counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside, is home to many football clubs, and therefore many local rivalries but, for Burnley supporters, the one that rally matters is the "East Lancashire Derby" against Blackburn Rovers. The two towns are just 14 miles apart, and the two teams have been going at it hammer and tongs sine 1888.
4. What have been Burnley's first-choice colours of shirt since 1946?

Answer: Claret & Sky Blue

Prior to World War 2, Burnley wore various colours of shirts, but, from 1946 onwards, have always worn claret shirts, usually with sky blue sleeves. The club's nickname is "The Clarets".
5. In 1914, Burnley won the FA Cup for the first time in their history when they defeated which team in the final?

Answer: Liverpool

Burnley's FA Cup run in season 1913-14 began with consecutive home wins over South Shields, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers. They needed a replay to see off Sunderland in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final against Sheffield United. A 0-0 draw at Old Trafford was followed by a 1-0 win at Goodison Park in the replay, to send Burnley through to the final.

The match, at the Crystal Palace in London, resulted in a 1-0 win over Liverpool, with Bert Freeman scoring the game's only goal.
6. Burnley's first league title success came in season 1920-21. Who was their long-serving manager who led them that season?

Answer: John Haworth

Burnley had finished season 1919-20, the first after World War 1, as runners-up in the league to West Bromwich Albion. The following season they went one better, winning the tile by five points from Manchester City. John Haworth was manager of Burnley between 1910 and 1924, leading them to FA Cup success in 1914 as well as the 1921 league championship.

He sadly died of pneumonia in December, 1924, aged just 48, whilst still the club's manager.
7. Burnley set a club record for its biggest league win in 1892, when they defeated which other Lancashire team 9-0?

Answer: Darwen

Darwen, from a town near Burnley, were Football League members from 1891-99, and struggled throughout most of that time. On 8th January 1892, Burnley thrashed them 9-0. Strangely enough, during the 20th century, Burnley also won three F.A. Cup ties by that same 9-0 scoreline, with Crystal Palace, New Brighton and Penrith being their victims.
8. In season 1959-60, Burnley became champions of England for the second time, finishing the season a single point ahead of which club?

Answer: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers were going for a hat-trick of league titles in 1959-60, but Burnley edged them out by a single point. John Connelly, Ray Pointer and Jimmy Robson scored 57 goals between them to help the Clarets to title glory.
9. Burnley's fortunes took a downward turn in the 1980s, and they came within 90 minutes of dropping out of the Football League altogether in 1987. Who did they defeat in their last game of the season to stave off relegation?

Answer: Orient

Season 1986-87 saw an incredible finish to the Division Four campaign, with three clubs, Burnley, Lincoln City and Torquay United, separated by two points at the bottom going into the final round of fixtures. Burnley were bottom so it was out of their hands, but they took care of their own business by beating Orient 2-0. Lincoln City lost at Swansea City, but would still have stayed up if Torquay lost at home to Crewe.

Incredibly, Torquay recovered from 0-2 down to draw 2-2, with the equalising goal coming deep into stoppage time after the game was delayed due to a Torquay player being bitten by a police dog!
10. Which player set a Burnley club record of 51 international appearances when he represented Northern Ireland in the 1950s?

Answer: Jimmy McIlroy

Jimmy McIlroy made 439 league appearances for Burnley between 1950 and 1963, scoring 116 goals. He would score 10 goals in a total of 55 national appearances for Northern Ireland. The east stand at the club's stadium was renamed the Jimmy McIlroy Stand in his honour in the 1990's.
