Coupling Trivia Questions

1. According to Jeff, many men fall into this during foreplay.

From Quiz
Jeff-isms

Answer: The Sock Gap

"My advice is to get them off right after your shoes and before your trousers...that's the sock gap. Miss it and suddenly you're a naked man in socks. No self-respecting woman will let a naked man in socks do the squelchy with her." Taken from the episode "Size Matters", series 1, episode 2. Then again, to Jeff taking off your socks is foreplay.

2. Episode 1 - 'Nine and a Half Minutes': Where has Jeff gone?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Four

Answer: the Greek island of Lesbos

We hear one side of a telephone conversation between Steve and Jeff. Jeff is apparently calling from the aeroplane and discussing a fellow passenger's surgically enhanced chest and whether or not implants present any kind of danger at high altitudes! The title of this episode refers to the same period of time (nine and a half minutes) spent by the different characters at the bar.

3. Episode 1 - 'Split': What is the 'Temple of Woman' for the girls?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Three

Answer: the beauty salon

The girls head for Sally's beauty salon after Steve and Susan split up whereas the boys head for a lap-dancing club where Jeff runs into an old school friend who is now a dancer.

4. Episode 1 - 'Flushed': Who or what is described as 'unflushable'?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season One

Answer: Jane Christie

Steve Taylor (Jack Davenport) is attempting to end his relationship with the vivacious Jane Christie (Gina Bellman) but she refuses to accept it. We are given the impression that he has attempted to end this relationship several times in the past, only to be seduced by Jane at the last moment. Jeff Murdoch (Richard Coyle) terms her 'unflushable' in typical 'Jeff' style. It is during such a seduction that Steve meets Susan in the ladies' toilet and asks her out. It is not the first time that they have met, but the first time that Steve remembers. Somewhat surprisingly, given the circumstances, Susan accepts.

5. At the beginning of episode 1, which two characters are single?

From Quiz 'Coupling' - Series 1 Quiz

Answer: Jeff and Sally

Steve is in the process of dumping the "unflushable" Jane, and Patrick and Susan are ending their fling. Steve of course asks Susan out whilst in the middle of sex with Jane, as you do.

6. Who does Steve break up with so he can date Susan?

From Quiz "Coupling"

Answer: Jane

They went out for four years and Steve broke up with Jane several times before she got it.

7. Episode 1 - 'Nine and a Half Minutes': What is the name of the comic book shop where Oliver works?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Four

Answer: Hellmouth's

We are shown the name of the shop when Oliver hands Susan his business card at the bar. As a result of a communication breakdown, Susan mistakenly believes him to be a gynaecologist! This is Oliver's first appearance in 'Coupling'. The role of Oliver Morris is played by Richard Mylan.

8. Episode 2 - 'Faithless': Which car does Jane's latest crush, James, drive?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Three

Answer: a red E-type Jaguar

Unfortunately for Jane, it soon transpires that James is the radio station's religious broadcaster. James encourages Jane to attend a religious meeting where she discovers, to her chagrin, that he has decided to remain celibate until he marries.

9. Episode 2 - 'My Dinner in Hell': What does NOT happen when Steve meets Mariella Frostrup in the bar?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Two

Answer: He exchanges phone numbers with Mariella

10. Sally pretends that her new boyfriend, Liam, is a surgeon. What is he really?

From Quiz "Coupling" - Series 2 Quiz

Answer: A butcher

Apparently she doesn't want to be on the receiving end of butcher jokes and thus, Sally pretended that Liam was a surgeon. Jane recognises him as being the butcher from the shop in her street.

11. When Steve and Susan go to bed for the first time together, Steve is thinking of Mariella Frostrup, but who is Susan imagining?

From Quiz 'Coupling' - Series 1 Quiz

Answer: Angus Deayton

Susan even thinks that Angus, naked in socks, would still be good, it is however Jeff's opinion that no self respecting woman would let a naked man in socks do the squelchy with her, such is the threat of the sock gap.

12. When Jane's relative dies, the boys play at a certain popular movie. What movie was it?

From Quiz "Coupling"

Answer: Reservoir Dogs

The music is playing while the guys are walking down the street and Susan tells them to "quit playing 'Reservoir Dogs.'" It was far too exciting.

13. This is what Jeff calls a boyfriend or girlfriend who you just cannot get rid of.

From Quiz Jeff-isms

Answer: Unflushable

Jeff: "Steve, do you know what I call this kind of woman? You know, the total "can't get rid of"." Steve: "Is this gonna be really tasteless? Am I gonna be ashamed to be your friend?" Jeff: "It's a technical term. It's just a harmless expression..." Steve: "Hit me" Jeff: "unflushable"! Steve: "Turn around Jeff, walk away!" Jeff: "You know, because they keep bobbing around." Steve: "No, no, no, Jeff! GO! GO! ... Don't look back. GO!" Taken from the episode "Flushed", series 1, episode 1. Sick as the term might be, it seems to aptly fit Jane.

14. Episode 2 - 'Night Lines': Who initiates the evening phone call?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Four

Answer: Susan

Susan calls Sally at Patrick's house because she is feeling emotional during her pregnancy. Before they know it, they also have Steve, Patrick, Oliver and Jane in on the conversation!

15. Episode 3 - 'Her Best Friend's Bottom': Why does Sally claim she is using Susan's flat?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Two

Answer: Her own shower is broken so she needs to use Susan's.

In actual fact, she is using Susan's flat for an intimate liaison with Patrick but none of the others are aware that there has been chemistry between Patrick and Sally. In true 'Coupling' style, this is revealed to everyone at the furniture shop.

16. Episode 2 - 'Size Matters': Where does Susan and Steve's first date alone take place?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season One

Answer: In Susan's flat

During their first date, the four friends tagged along. Susan suggests cooking for Steve and both the girls and boys speculate as to her ulterior motives! I can't give info about the giggle loop because "to know about the giggle loop is to become part of the giggle loop".

19. Who has a closet full of tapes of himself with his ex's?

Answer: Patrick

Susan got angry when she found out Patrick taped over her.

"When you first see an attractive woman, you've got a nudity buffer of maybe, 5 minutes before you've fully worked out what she looks like naked." "If you don't get in there and talk to her during that first five minutes, it's too late cause then she'll be naked in your head and you'll forget rule one of playing it cool!" Thaken from the episode "The Girl With Two Breasts", series 1, episode 5. This is one of my favorite episodes, where Jeff meets a girl who doesn't speak English. We see their conversation from a his and hers perspective.

21. Episode 2 - 'Night Lines': What is the name of Oliver's pregnant ex-girlfriend?

Jeff tries to ascertain Wilma's motives and even gets his friends involved via mobile telephone to offer advice. Unfortunately for poor Jeff, he ends up telling her that his girlfriend 'Mary' is dead. This has hilarious consequences when Wilma manages to talk her way into Jeff's apartment at the end of the evening only to find feet sticking out of the end of Jeff's bed: apparently Julia returned home earlier than expected! Wilma runs out of Jeff's apartment fearing that Jeff has kept his dead girlfriend in the flat!

23. Episode 4 - 'The Melty Man Cometh': Who suggests the idea of the 'Melty Man' first to Patrick?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Two

Answer: Jeff

Jeff and Steve are both familiar with the 'Melty Man' and are in fact uncomfortable at the mention of his name. Patrick encounters the 'Melty Man' first in the bathroom whilst preparing for a romantic interlude with Sally. By the time he leaves the bathroom, he discovers that Sally has gone. We observe that he places his wine glass near to Sally's, a symbol that Jane mentions earlier in the episode as showing that a man is attracted to a woman.

24. Episode 2 - 'Size Matters': What does Patrick warn Steve to look out for in Susan's apartment?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season One

Answer: her collection of remote controls

25. The second person Chrissy introduces Jeff to is her flatmate, what is her name?

From Quiz 'Coupling' - Series 1 Quiz

Answer: Thighs

"How could you say thighs to a person with an interview?"

27. When a woman is wearing a skirt, according to Jeff, there is always this in the room.

From Quiz Jeff-isms

Answer: V.A.A.

"You know what's great about skirts? When a woman's wearing a skirt, you know, you know, that somewhere in that room shifting all the time is the V.A.A. The Visual Access Angle. A clear line of sight right to base camp. You just have to switch chairs right, or maybe move your head a bit, or accidentally fall on the floor and there'll be nothing but clear air between intimate sighting number one...Sorry I was just thinking about skirts" Taken from the episode "Dressed", series 2, episode 7. This quote reminds me of Sharon Stone's famous scene in 'Basic Instinct'.

28. Episode 3 - 'Bed Time': What song does Susan advise Sally to sing to prevent Patrick leaving her flat for the night?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Four

Answer: All By Myself

Patrick has been desperately trying to escape from what he terms 'The Enchanted Glade of his One True Love' and return to his own flat. Sally wants him to stay every night and this comes to a head one evening over dinner. Patrick is determined not to consume any alcohol so that he might drive home; however, Sally has been refilling his glass! As he prepares to leave, a drunken Sally is advised by Susan to sing 'All By Myself' but she mishears and sings a song that she and Jane made up about Susan being a happy elf! Patrick stays nevertheless.

Answer: He claims she phoned him to kill a spider.

Patrick dreams that Sally has called him to kill a spider. When he arrives, he's rather cross at being called out in the middle of the night for something so trivial. 30. Episode 5 - 'Jane and the Truth Snake': What colour is Jane's truth snake?

From Quiz 'Coupling' Season Two

Answer: Pink

Jane wears this modified sock called 'Jake the Snake' on her right hand and is unable to stop it from telling the truth about situations. It speaks in an American accent and manages to offend all who come into contact with it - including Jane herself! She is using the snake to practise her entry into children's entertainment, even though she dislikes kids!
