From Quiz Wandering the Virtual Deserts

Answer: Journey

In typical thatgamecompany fashion, "Journey", like its predecessors, is presented in a largely minimalistic way. There's no UI and very little in the way of on-screen instructions. From the very beginning, the ultimate goal of reaching a great mountain in the distance is made clear. While not so much a game as an interactive experience, "Journey" nonetheless transitions between a desert environment, the crumbling ruins of a forgotten civilisation, a darkened subterranean cave system and a snowy ascent to the top of the mountain.

In this one, you navigated a desert searching for pieces of fabric to help you lead the way to your next destination and, ultimately, you would need to reach a distant mountain. The game also allowed players to meet up together in the barren desert, but online and with minimal communication. As simple as the game was, it was awarded several different 'Game of the Year' prizes from different publications.

From Quiz Video Game Cities

16. Poor old Gobi the camel is forced to give up his precious water in his homeworld, before leaving it in search of different climes. In which Rareware video game would you find the somewhat desert-like Gobi's Valley?

From Quiz Wandering the Virtual Deserts

Answer: Banjo-Kazooie

On their quest to save Banjo's sister Tooty from the evil clutches of Gruntilda the witch, Banjo and Kazooie find themselves in Gobi's Valley in search of more musical notes and jigsaw pieces. Pyramids and a talking sphinx called Jinxy can be found here, as well as shambling mummies and disembodied bandaged hands. A few puzzles can be played here too, including a memory card game using large floor tiles, and a hasty jaunt through the maze of King Sandybutt. The eponymous Gobi the camel can be found in this world, tied up to a rock. Banjo and Kazooie free him but later force him to give up his water to rejuvenate a dying tree. Annoyed, Gobi runs off to a small alcove hidden away in the world, whereupon Banjo and Kazooie can force him to give up an Empty Honeycomb Piece (used to increase their health). 21. The Dusty Dunes Desert was featured between the cities of Threed and Fourside in what SNES RPG?

From Quiz Desert Settings in Video Games

Answer: Earthbound

While not a lot of the actual (extensive) storyline unfolds in the Dusty Dunes Desert, this intermediary area between the mid-game cities of Threed and Fourside is interesting because, like in a real, blazing desert, it holds the severe possibility of inflicting sunstroke on Ness and the party. No worries though! As long as you have Wet Towels on-hand (which you can buy at the local drug store), the sun is very little to fear as you head towards the game's metropolis.

22. The Civil Protection people in this city are not individuals you'd want to meet up with. In which supposedly well-ordered city, conquered by aliens, will you find them?

From Quiz Video Game Cities

Answer: City 17

City 17 is supposedly located in Eastern Europe in "Half-Life 2". The Combine, composed mostly of aliens, runs things in this ugly, decaying metropolis. The Combine's base of operations, The Citadel, dominates the area, reaching over two kilometers in the sky.

23. "Spec Ops: The Line" takes place in and around a sand-buried version of which Asian city?

From Quiz Wandering the Virtual Deserts

Answer: Dubai

Unusually for a shooter video game, "Spec Ops: The Line" is more narrative-driven than its forebears. Set amongst a partially-buried Dubai after a series of severe sandstorms, the game follows a team of US military soldiers who are sent into the city to search for survivors after a radio transmission. Captain Walker, the central character, experiences a series of hallucinations that get progressively worse before he is confronted with the true nature of the events that have occurred in Dubai.

24. Which game took Spyro through the Dragon Realms, which had six different homeworlds: Artisans, Peace Keepers, Magic Crafters, Beast Makers, Dream Weavers, and Gnasty's World?

From Quiz Video Game Geography

Answer: Spyro the Dragon

"Spyro the Dragon" was the first game in the series, and was released for the PlayStation in 1998. His ultimate enemy was Gnasty Gnorc, who had attacked the Dragon Realms and trapped the dragons.

25. This time I bought an Attack FX P badge somewhere. Where am I?

From Quiz Name That Place!

Answer: Rogueport

More specifically, I'm in the Lovely Howz of Badges. Badges can be bought in all four of these places, though. I'm in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door".

26. The video game "Formula One 04" uses all of the circuits that made up the 2004 Formula One World Championship, including the one that hosted the Chinese Grand Prix. In which city could this circuit be found?

From Quiz Made in China

Answer: Shanghai

"Formula One 04" was first released for the Playstation 2 in July 2004 and was the first official F1 racing game to feature China's Shanghai International Circuit. The circuit was constructed between April 2003 and June 2004 and held the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix (which was won by Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello) on 26 September 2004. The game was part of an ongoing franchise of F1 racing games developed by Psygnosis (later known as Studio Liverpool) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment during the period from 2003-07 that Sony held the exclusive rights to release official F1 games. It gave players a chance to (virtually) experience driving all 18 tracks that held F1 grands prix in 2004, as well as the chance to drive all the cars and play as any of the original line up of drivers who took part in the season. It also introduced a 'career mode' that allowed players to simulate an F1 driver's career - starting off in a slow car at the back of the grid and earning the right to move up to the bigger teams that provide a genuine chance for a driver to become world champion. This question was raced into the quiz by Phoenix Rising's resident F1 fan, F1f1ona81.

27. Sirrus and Achenar, sons of Atrus, need rescuing through the solving of some extremely complicated puzzles. On which island would this be the case?

From Quiz The Many Lands of a Console

Answer: Myst

When this game was released for PlayStation in 1996, I spent hours playing it. Players must visit various "ages" in order to decipher garbled messages and solve complex puzzles before returning to Myst to piece together the clues. The more puzzles solved, the clearer the messages become and the more complex the puzzles start to become as well.

28. Choco Mountain is a track that first appeared in which "Mario Kart" game?

From Quiz My Interest is Peaked

Answer: Mario Kart 64

Choco Mountain is fairly simple in terms of design, with the winding through a canyon of what presumably is chocolate, given the name. Around two-thirds of the way around, the track loops back on itself in a precarious hairpin-like turn. What makes this turn tricky is the removal of barriers and the danger of falling rocks. The track briefly runs parallel to and above an earlier section, so it can be quite easy to fall down onto the track, forcing you to go back around the hairpin again.

29. An Egyptian-styled location (complete with Sphinx) was fabricated for use in the second wave of puzzles in what philosophical PC game?

From Quiz Desert Settings in Video Games

Answer: The Talos Principle

Released on Steam and PS4, this unique puzzle game puts you into the role of a sentient AI who, in trying to determine its origin, is forced to complete different trials involving mechanical equipment to collect items and advance rom area to area. The game's second stage is Egyptian-themed, so visiting those ones in particular will place you in expansive deserts and into ruins and pyramids. While the environment in the game doesn't necessarily affect gameplay through theme, the surroundings definitely play a role in how you construct your solutions and, in some cases, they hold hidden secrets.

30. Looking for something besides zombies and apocalyptic trash in the streets? Give this sophisticated city in the Crescent Nebula a try. What is its name again?

From Quiz Video Game Cities

Answer: Nos Astra

Nos Astra is the capital of the planet Illium, dominated by the Asari, a feminine-appearing race in the game "Mass Effect 2". While it looks like a city catering to the senses, there is an undercurrent of danger here.
