"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" was an adventure game released for the Atari 2600 in December 1982, several months after the classic sci-fi film debuted. Atari had hoped to capitalize on the film's success and produced what they felt were enough games to satisfy that year's holiday demand. However, the video game's development was rushed and ultimately flopped. Today, it is often considered to be one of the worst video games ever made. The failure of the "E.T." video game, combined with an already saturated video game market, led to a major recession in the video game industry the following year. In September 1983, thousands (if not millions) of "E.T." game cartridges (along with other excess Atari products) were believed to have been buried at a landfill near Alamogordo, New Mexico. In April 2014, an excavation team managed to dig up over a thousand "E.T." games from the landfill.

"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" (2009 PS3/PS4) was a follow up to "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (2007 PS3), the first in the series about treasure hunter, Nathan Drake. In a little over five years, "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" sold almost seven million copies worldwide, thanks in part to winning this award. The game also won Best Console Game at the Gamescom Awards of 2009 and Game of the Year at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards.

Basically, when about to debut a new line of power tools on his TV show, Tim discovers that someone has taken them and hidden them all over the movie lot. Obviously he has to recover these tools but along the way, several bizarre creatures will attempt to stop him. Luckily these enemies can be defeated with the tools that every good tool man has at his disposal, such as a nail gun, a chainsaw, a flame thrower and dynamite! The best thing about this game however was the fact that it didn't come with an instruction manual, instead it contained a book that simply said, "Real men don't need instructions"

While the "Grand Theft Auto" series, over the years, has pushed the envelope with mature themes due to the general gimmick of navigating an open world environment, usually in seedier cityscapes and criminal underbellies, "San Andreas" was the first one to face severe backlash when a quick mod released for the game (known as 'hot coffee') allowed players to engage in a gratuitous encounter. Its existence fuelled discourse about appropriate content for gaming media and countries had the game re-rated to avoid those under the age of majority getting their hands on it. Later versions of the game were released with the assets of the in-game event removed altogether, but not before civil lawsuits could sink their teeth into the developers at Rockstar Games. The "Grand Theft Auto" series has since gone on to release new titles to record-breaking sales, often being cited as a reason for devastating blows to periodic blockbuster film intake at the box office.

In the game you aim with the mouse, charge up your shot, and fire in order to try and pop the most balloons you can. As the games go on, more types of balloons are introduced, more obstacles are added, and the game becomes all the more tricky with puzzles.

Once the bridge is opened up, it's a mad dash to escape the horde. The bridge is destroyed by an air strike shortly after these events while any survivors are flown to a quarantine elsewhere.

You know it has to be bad when the publishers collected tens of thousands of copies of the game back in the mid-1980s and buried them in a landfill in New Mexico just to be rid of them. Sure enough, they were all still there when they unearthed the site in 2014. But just to give a bit of history, this horrible game, known for being inane and completely beside the point of the film, ended up being one in a small handful of poorly-developed titles for early-'80s consoles that led major companies into an industry recession. Many credit Nintendo with bringing things back around when they launched the NES in North America a couple years later. Now the horrible "E.T." game is history...in the Smithsonian.

For those too young to remember, the ZX Spectrum was an early computer sold primarily in the UK during the 1980s. The ZX Spectrum competed with and had much the same capabilities as the Commodore 64 system. Software developers produced several thousand games for use on the ZX Spectrum and the platform spurred creative graphic design development. "Zombie Zombie" was designed by British programmer Sandy White and featured then revolutionary 3D graphics. The game was released by Quicksilva in 1984 and is often cited as the first "zombie" themed video game. "Zombie Zombie" dropped players in the middle of a city overrun by slow moving animated dead people. The zombies could be killed when players pushed them over the edge of buildings using bursts of air from a rifle. Sandy White had previously developed the innovative computer game "Ant Attack" and much of the same software and graphics were used in developing "Zombie Zombie".

The original "Steel Battalion" had one of the most unique controls ever made for home gaming systems when it was released in the early 2000's. The control featured two joy sticks, 40 buttons. A sequel using the same controller, "Steel Battalion: Line of Contact", that was nearly as popular with fans. The next-generation version didn't turn out as well received. The Kinect accessory, which was supposed to track players movements, rarely worked as designed which often caused players undo frustration.

"Animal Crossing" first released on the Gamecube back in 2001 and quickly became a popular 'Player's Choice' title for the system. As such, sequels emerged on a number of devices in later years beginning with the DS, then continuing on the Wii and 3DS. The 3DS version, released in 2012, was called "Animal Crossing: New Leaf", and it allowed players to, as is typical in the series, take the role of a person moving into a new village and living amongst its people, often animals, while performing different tasks and unlocking new things. The game, allowing players to link up online, was extremely well-received.

Turning on "Super Mario 64" would bring you to a screen of Mario's head and, before you pressed Start to enter the game, allow you to shift some of his facial features around with the analog stick and A button, creating funny faces that could stick until you released the Z button. The added feature was popular enough to reappear in "Mario Party" (N64) as a mini-game called 'Face Lift', in which you had to match Bowser's squished face using an exemplar and your own copy.

"Super Mario Galaxy", by and large, was the main "Mario" series spin-off for the Nintendo Wii. The follow-up to the 3D platforming adventures in "Super Mario Sunshine" (GCN), "Galaxy" took Mario into the cosmos, flying from star to star, as he collected Lumas and Star Bits on his quest to save (who else?) Princess Peach from (who else?) Bowser who, this time, has taken to the infinite vacuum of space. Both games used the Wii Remote's motion controls to add a new dimension of maneuverability onscreen.

"Pikmin", released in 2001 as a Gamecube exclusive, became a surprise hit for its unique playstyle. In the game you took on the role of Captain Olimar, a pilot for the Hocotate Express who crashed on another world. Using the local denizens, whom he dubbed Pikmin, he would be able to rebuild his ship to fly home. Each of the Pikmin performed a different task; blue ones, for instance, could go into water while others would drown. "Pikmin 2" appeared on the Gamecube in 2004 and it took another nine years for a new game in the series (on the Wii U). Olimar also became a character in "Super Smash Bros." in later years.

Starman is a classic piece of "Mario" iconography, appearing in games as far back as the original "Super Mario Bros.". When Mario or any other character grabs hold of one, they will flash multiple colours and destroy any enemies in their path, impervious to hits. These are usually featured in the platforming games of the series but are also used in "Mario Kart". A standard side-scroller for NES gamers, "Castlevania" was a horror-themed game featuring Frankenstein's monster, the Grim Reaper, and Dracula as the final boss-- you traveled in and around castles and dungeons to reach the end of the level culminating in a boss battle, but along the way enemies would hack at health mercilessly with single hits, precise movements would be needed to go up stairs or jump over small gaps, and you'd be marred at every turn by an inability to jump forward (only up and down). Nonetheless, "Castlevania" was popular enough to warrant sequels, leading up to releases on later Nintendo and Sony consoles. It was a bestseller and many of the later games in the series continued with critical praise.

Created by Terra Nova Development, this game starts with a commuter subway train being sucked into another dimension. Daedalus then explains that he has been forced to create a labyrinth that will enable King Minos to invade and conquer through the space time continuum. The player has to destroy the labyrinth before this happens. It was intended to be the first in a series of games, but was not successful and the sequels were never produced. It can currently be found on Apple iPad and iPhone.

Although Bemani (part of Konami) made the "Dance Dance Revolution" series first (or "Dancing Stage" in UK), they also made the lesser-known "Para Para Paradise" in 2000 for arcades and, to a lesser extent, consoles. The arcade version featured five motion-sensing paddles above the player as they moved their hands in time with the song and on-screen prompts; the console version placed the pads on the floor. Much like "DDR", the game relied on accuracy, good timing, and practice. It featured many famous "DDR" artists (eg. Naoki, DJ TAKA, etc.) but failed to swing new players into the genre. The genre of Para Para, as a dance, never really picked up outside South Korea and Japan.

Warden Quincy Sharp has a secret, no, make that a super secret office in which he has hidden details of land that has been purchased and blueprints of plans to extend the asylum. The whole point of this Easter egg was to plant the seeds of a sequel to the game - Arkham City. There was one tiny flaw with this great idea ... they had made it so hard to find the egg that it wasn't discovered until after the sequel had hit the shelves. The allusions to "west" and "baled" in the question reference Adam West and Christian Bale who have both played the role of Batman on the big screen.

"Final Fantasy IX" (2000-2001, PSX) is the ninth (surprisingly...) in the popular role playing game series. "FFIX ' particularly has a more cartoon-like style to differentiate itself from the more technologically based VII and VIII. Burmecia is visited by the main party shortly after its invasion from Alexandria, and is the first of the major cities to fall. The music and rain set the scene as there are virtually no survivors left after the attack... and the offence doesn't stop there. The alternative name for Myanmar is Burma, a country in southeast Asia.

"Duck Hunt" was part of an interesting combo deal back in the day. When players purchased an NES console in North America they would also receive a combo copy of "Super Mario Bros." and "Duck Hunt" on the same cartridge. "Duck Hunt" required an NES Zapper light gun to play and the premise was simple: shoot down the ducks. All you needed to do was point at the screen and pull the trigger. Players of the game may remember the snickering dog that appeared at the bottom of the screen who laughed when you missed the birds. Yeah...no one really cared for that dog. The game also features a Clay Shooting/Skeet mode in which you shoot clay pigeons.
