Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city, known for its rat like people and sounding like the alternative name for Myanmar, is known as the 'Realm of Eternal Rain' in "Final Fantasy IX"?

Answer: Burmecia

"Final Fantasy IX" (2000-2001, PSX) is the ninth (surprisingly...) in the popular role playing game series. "FFIX
' particularly has a more cartoon-like style to differentiate itself from the more technologically based VII and VIII. Burmecia is visited by the main party shortly after its invasion from Alexandria, and is the first of the major cities to fall. The music and rain set the scene as there are virtually no survivors left after the attack... and the offence doesn't stop there.
The alternative name for Myanmar is Burma, a country in southeast Asia.
2. In which of these hot games does a deluge of rain cause young protagonist Ryu and his friend Bo to seek shelter from the rain in a cave, which nearly leads to them both dying?

Answer: Breath of Fire II

"Breath of Fire II" (1994, SNES) is also a role playing game. Whilst all the games in this series do not directly follow each other - although several theories have been made about possible linkages - the main character is always named Ryu and always has the power to turn into a dragon.

The game tackles several issues, most notably religion. Several of the game's minor antagonists turn out to be demons who let their wicked desires go too far. Whilst the story has its pros, the random encounter rate is, at times, incredibly high, making regular combat a nuisance.
3. Which of these "Wild Arms II" protagonists, who shares his first name with an actor in "Ocean's Eleven" (2001), must endure torrential rain in his prologue story as he is on the run from imminent capture?

Answer: Brad

"Wild Arms II" (2000, PSX) is a Western themed role playing game. The three main characters: Ashley, Brad and Lilka each have a prologue story which leads to them joining a special group called ARMS, a group originally made to combat a terrorist organisation named Odessa.

In Brad's prologue, he is an old war hero on the run. Whilst on the woody track, he meets a dog who helps him keep his cover. However, once he reaches a village, he gives himself up for capture after the pursuers find it (and him) and threaten to cause carnage. He is broken out by Ashley and Lilka to complete the ARMS group.

The actor referred to was Brad Pitt, hopefully the hint helped.
4. In "Secret of Mana", Acid Rain is one of the earliest spells learned, which temporarily lowers enemy defence whilst doing some damage, too. Which of the elemental spirits, also a water spirit in mythology, teaches Acid Rain?

Answer: Undine

"Secret of Mana" (1993, SNES) is an action role playing game featuring a boy, a girl and a sprite. After playing with his 'friends' Timothy and Elliot, the boy falls off to the bottom of a waterfall, virtually unscathed (well, it wouldn't have been a very long story if he died then). After pulling a sword to clear the bushes and get back to Potos Village, he is banished after it is revealed that was the Mana Sword which protected the village. This act causes monsters to appear across the land, and the boy has the responsibility of powering the legendary Mana Sword up to remedy the situation.

Acid Rain is taught by Undine, the water spirit, who is the first the party meet. Undine, or Ondine, is a water nymph who appears in a German tale called "Sleep of Ondine". She loses her immortality to mate with a mortal man, and ends up cursing him after he cheats on her due to her fading attractiveness, and he will die if he sleeps.
The Sprite can cast offensive magic, so is the only one who can use Acid Rain. However, Freeze, another Undine spell, gives a better return for the MP cost, so will be used more regularly than Acid Rain.
5. Near the end of "Final Fantasy VII", Heidegger and Scarlett decide to take on the main group with a robot they made, and following the battle, it rains ominously. What is the name of this boss, whose name could otherwise mean an eminent lump of earth?

Answer: Proud Clod

"Final Fantasy VII" (1997, PSX) is a rather technologically-themed role-playing game, one of the most popular in the series. Heidegger and Scarlett are both high ranked members of the Shinra Inc, who are slowly killing the planet through use of their Mako reactors.

Midgar is the most important city in the game, and is very technologically advanced compared to many other places in the game. A lot of the early game is spent there. Once the party leave, they cannot return until much later, and as Midgar is split into 8 sectors, much of Midgar can never be explored. Near the end of the game, however, the party must return there, and on the way to their goal, Heidegger and Scarlett 'greet' the group in a large robot named Proud Clod (not Prod Cloud). After defeating them, it begins to rain, which sets the scene for a somewhat chilling upcoming scene. Interestingly, the group exit the sewers at the same location Cloud previously jumped onto the train following the Sector 1 reactor bombing.
6. Which of these alliterative "Donkey Kong Country" levels, the first to feature climbable ropes, is raining for most of the player's duration spent there?

Answer: Ropey Rampage

"Donkey Kong Country" (1994, SNES) was one of the first games to use background layering to create a somewhat 3D effect, which was quite impressive at the time. It is a platform game featuring Donkey and Diddy Kong, who are in search of their stolen banana hoard. Ropey Rampage is the second level in the game, and is the first level which features climbing and swinging ropes.

The rain subsides at the very end of the level and is never seen again, however, other weather effects such as blizzards can be observed in other levels.
7. In "Tales of Phantasia", which of these towns is severely lacking in rain, as it is in a desert environment? (Hint: It does not sound like a shelled animal, the home of humans in Norse mythology, or the 'Father of Geometry'.)

Answer: Olive Village

"Tales of Phantasia" (1995, SNES) is the first in the "Tales" series and was also the first game to feature the use of real voices in battle and music, although their quality left something to be desired. The combat system uses random battles set in a 2D field, and is quite difficult to master as only one character can be controlled at a time, and some of the fights are quite unforgivable.

The story features the adventures of Cless/Cress who, after his hometown is sadly sacked early in the game, eventually has to cross the barrier of time itself to defeat Dhaos, a powerful humanoid from another planet, although this defeat is bittersweet.
Olive Village is in the middle of a desert. It has some catchy music and is a good place for travellers to stop by before exploring the desert.

Totus sounds like 'tortoise' (a bit...) and Euclid is a Greek mathematician often called the 'Father of Geometry'. All four are towns in the game, and there are other Norse mythology references in the game (for example, one of Odin's valkyries will make an appearance), and Midgard was probably named for its Norse background, given what occurs there.
8. In "Secret of Evermore", which of these protective spells does NOT feature rain at all?

Answer: Reflect

"Secret of Evermore" (1995, SNES) is a role playing game where a young boy and his dog accidentally activate a teleportation device in an abandoned research laboratory, sending them to the fantasy world of Evermore. The combat system has some parallels with "Secret of Mana", such as the ring selection system, and also that battles are fought in real-time on a field. However, spells are called Alchemy in Evermore, and must use consumeable reagents such as Oil, Water, Limestone and so on in order to cast them.

The 'rain' spells are mostly not preferred for general use, however.
Acid Rain is learnt early in the game, and it simply does damage to opponents, single or multi-cast. Its cost of 1 Ash, 3 Water makes it unfavourable for general use as Heal and some other support spells use Water (there is a cap of 99).
Corrosion uses 1 Mushroom, 3 Water and ticks 4-10 damage every 2 seconds in addition to a small base damage amount. Since fights rarely last that long in this game, it's not very useful.
Lightning Storm uses 1 Iron, 2 Ash and is another plain damage spell. Its graphic is quite nice, but Explosion, obtained shortly beforehand, is better in cost and damage.
Reflect uses 2 Grease and 1 Iron, and has a green descending light as its animation. It reflects Alchemy used against the team, but the spell is gained very near the end of the game and enemies don't use Alchemy there.
9. I bet you saw this question coming. In which of these games known for its Raincoat Killer does the onset of rain usually indicate that someone is soon about to die?

Answer: Deadly Premonition

"Deadly Premonition" (2010, Xbox 360) is a horror puzzle game set in the fictional town of Greenvale. It is a very strange game and has many eccentricities, particularly the main character who goes by the name York, and he uses his coffee cup for guidance and also talks to "Zach", another personality of York's.

He initially is investigating the death of Anna Graham, a young girl who is hung up on a tree in a somewhat artistic fashion. However, as the storyline progresses, the danger increases, which is usually synonymous with rainy spells, and it is hard to make much sense of some aspects of the game until very late on. Nevertheless, it has a unique story.
10. Which psychological thriller game, released in 2010 for the PS3, involves four protagonists trying to discover the secret of the Origami Killer?

Answer: Heavy Rain

"Heavy Rain" (2010, PS3) is an interactive mystery game which investigates the identity and puzzles of the Origami Killer, who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown his victims. The game takes place from four people's perspectives, and the player can make choices of which some have a large bearing on the final outcome of the game. Because of their similar release dates and genres, "Heavy Rain" and "Deadly Premonition" have been compared, and whilst "Heavy Rain" is a more 'sharp' game, "Deadly Premonition" and its eccentricities have seemed more unique to some people.

But either way, both have rain.
