Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Last of Us" (2013 PS3 & PS4) was the winner in 2014. Which other game from developer, Naughty Dog, took home the award in 2010?

Answer: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" (2009 PS3/PS4) was a follow up to "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (2007 PS3), the first in the series about treasure hunter, Nathan Drake.
In a little over five years, "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" sold almost seven million copies worldwide, thanks in part to winning this award. The game also won Best Console Game at the Gamescom Awards of 2009 and Game of the Year at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards.
2. Which video game franchise released its first game in 1986, yet had to wait until 2018 to win the Game Developers Choice Award for the Game of the Year?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

OK, so the Game Developers Choice Awards weren't around for the first fourteen years of "Zelda", but even so games in the franchise, such as "The Wind Waker" (2002 GameCube), "Twilight Princess" (2006 Wii & GameCube) and "Skyward Sword" (2011 Wii) were all eligible.
The series finally took the award though in 2017, when "Breath of the Wild" (2017 Nintendo Switch & Wii U) was victorious, beating out "Horizon Zero Dawn" (2017 PS4) and "Super Mario Odyssey" (2017 Nintendo Switch).
3. The inaugural winner of the award was the game which introduced us to Ginia Kat, Michael Bachelor and Mortimer Goth. Which game was this?

Answer: The Sims

It doesn't seem possible that "The Sims" (2000 Microsoft Windows) was released so long ago, although it was thoroughly deserving of the award, as almost everybody seemed to be playing it in the early 2000s.
Between 2000 and 2014, there were many "Sims" games released, along with several expansion packs. So many expansion packs in fact, that the franchise is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for this, along with a listing for being the best selling PC game.
Other families in the original release of "The Sims" included the Snooty Patooty family, the Caliente family and ever helpful in the tutorials, the Newbie family.
4. Only one game for the now discontinued Nintendo GameCube won the Game Developers Choice Award for the Game of the Year. Which game was this that followed the bounty hunter Samus Aran and her battles with the Space Pirates?

Answer: Metroid Prime

2003 was the year that saw "Metroid Prime" (2002 GameCube) win the award, beating out the likes of "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" (2002 PS2 & Xbox) and "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" (2002 PS2, Xbox and GameCube).
The game was the fifth release in the "Metroid" franchise and the first in the "Prime" trilogy which also included "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes" (2004 GameCube and Wii) and "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption" (2007 Wii).
5. Culture and surreal combine in the 2020 winner of the award, as you have the music of Claude Debussy playing while you sneak up on villagers, playing as which animal?

Answer: Goose

The 2020 winner of the award was the puzzle game, "Untitled Goose Game" (2019 Switch, PS4 and Xbox One), a game whose title was born when the developers quickly had to think of a title for their game to be exhibited at a festival in Texas.
In the game, the player controls a goose, attempting to steal required objects from villagers, with the ultimate aim of winning a crown for completing all tasks.
The game uses music from the fifth prelude in Claude Debussy's "Preludes, Les collines d'Anacapri" (1909) and uses it quite cleverly too. When the goose is stalking a villager, the music plays quietly, but when the goose is being chased, the music plays at regular volume.
6. The last game for the PS2 to win the Game Developers Choice Award for the Game of the Year was released in 2005 and tasked Wander with restoring the life of Mono. Which game, developed by Team Ico was this?

Answer: Shadow of the Colossus

In this 2005 release for the PS2, Wander had to cross a vast landscape on his horse, Agro, defeating sixteen huge beings, known only as the colossi, along the way.
Luckily each of the colossi has a weak spot to make victory possible, but unfortunately, many of these weak spots are difficult to reach and require puzzle solving abilities and there is also a downside to defeating the colossi, as Wander slowly becomes possessed by a disembodied entity known as Dormin. Life as a hero is never simple eh?
7. There have been many games released that are based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, but the first to win the Game Developers Choice Award for the Game of the Year did so in 2015. Which game, in which the player controlled Talion was this?

Answer: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

Somewhat surprisingly, not only was "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" (2014 PS3, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360) the first Tolkien game to win the award, but it was the first to make the shortlist too.
The gameplay features ranger, Talion joining forces with the wraith of Elven Lord Celebrimbor, to defeat the armies of Sauron through a variety of means.
The developers for this game were Monolith Productions who had previously worked on the Tolkien inspired "Guardians of Middle-Earth" (2012 PS3 and Xbox 360) and would go on to make "Middle-earth: Shadow of War" (2017 PS4 and Xbox One).
8. If Marcus Fenix is the character and the setting is the planet Sera, which 2007 winner of the Game Developers Choice Award for the Game of the Year would we be looking for?

Answer: Gears of War

This 2007 winner for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One from Epic Games was the one that started the ball rolling on the "Gears of War" franchise. Although the game wasn't released until November 7th 2006, it became the fastest selling game of that year and incredibly, sold in excess of three million copies within ten weeks of being released.
The gears of war is the name given in the game to the soldiers of the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG), the only human government remaining on Sera.
Marcus Fenix is a gear within Delta Squad, alongside Dom Santiago, Augustus Cole and Damon Baird.
9. Which game from Rockstar not only won Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2011 but also took the prize at the Spike Video Game Awards in 2010? Surely the only clue you need is John Marston?

Answer: Red Dead Redemption

"Red Dead Redemption" (2010 PS3 and Xbox 360) was an instant hit as gamers fell in love with the wide open spaces of the American frontier in the early 20th century. Players controlled John Marston, a former outlaw whose family had been kidnapped by the American government.

The only way for Marston to be reunited with his family is to bring the former members of his gang to justice, but you just know that in the Old West, that ain't gonna be that easy. On the game's release, gaming guru, Jaz Rignall said it was "one of the finest open world games so far seen" and it went on to be nominated for countless awards, winning many as well as retaining its popularity long after its release date.
10. 2019 saw the first time a game released solely for the PlayStation 4 won the Game Developers Choice Award for the Game of the Year. This game was based in Norse mythology but had the same name as a 2005 release based on Greek mythology. What was the game?

Answer: God of War

Both games entitled "God of War" were from developers Santa Monica Studio, but while the 2005 release for the PS2 lost out to "Shadow of the Colossus" (2005) at the awards, the 2018 release for the PS4 swept all comers aside.
In both games the player controls Kratos, who in the later release is attempting to scatter his wife's ashes at the highest peak of the nine realms.
The game won many awards and also spawned several books including a novelisation of the video game.
