Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starman is an item used by which character to gain temporary immortality against foes?

Answer: Mario

Starman is a classic piece of "Mario" iconography, appearing in games as far back as the original "Super Mario Bros.". When Mario or any other character grabs hold of one, they will flash multiple colours and destroy any enemies in their path, impervious to hits.

While this won't save Mario from pitfalls or lava (nothing ever really does), it will come in handy for a short time. These are usually featured in the platforming games of the series but are also used in "Mario Kart". They're also considered of greater importance in the item hierarchy of the series, above mushrooms and fire flowers specifically.
2. In the "Donkey Kong Country" (SNES) series, what appears on the Invincibility Barrel?

Answer: An exclamation mark

The Invincibility Barrel can come in handy for DK or Diddy (or Dixie...or Kiddy) depending on the situation and, in some cases, it's necessary to make use of the game mechanic to advance through some of the side-scrolling levels alive. The Invincibility Barrel also appears to an extent in "Donkey Kong 64", but it can only be used by DK and only after he learns the Strong Kong ability from Cranky later in the game. This barrel does not feature the exclamation point, however; instead it features DK's face.

The Star Barrel, while more common, is used as a checkpoint in levels in the series.
3. When Pac-Man eats one of these he becomes invincible and able to eat ghosts! What is the item?

Answer: Power Pellet

The Power Pellet appears in four different spots in each stage of the original arcade version of "Pac-Man", and when the titular circle eats his treat he gains invincibility for a very short amount of time. This can be game-changing, however, since it allows him to eat any ghosts (which turn blue for the time) as they run in the opposite direction.

When the ghosts are eaten they will return to their home in the center of the screen, only to reemerge once the powers fade away. Fleeting, that immortality.
4. While the player in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" (Wii) still has a chance of falling to their death, which of these major power-ups typically gives a bit of invincibility while dealing massive damage to the opponent?

Answer: Final Smash

The Final Smash is an orb which floats around the battlefield on occasion, and when struck and broken by a specific player it will grant them the power to enable a powerful hidden talent. While this talent varies from character to character, the end result is usually the same-- that character can't be damaged and they deal massive attacks to everyone else in range. For instance, Kirby will cook everyone in range in a large pot and shoot them away while Ness and Lucas will use PK Starstorm to rain meteors on the battlefield.

Some characters can be hit/damaged during the Final Smash (Bowser, for instance) and others can fall to their deaths (eg. Fox, Wolf, and Falco's Landmaster), but typically they end up doing a great deal. Starman also appears in this game in full capacity, granting invincibility to the user for a short time.
5. Kirby can become invincible in his series when he eats which of the following?

Answer: Candy

Invincibility Candy has been present in the "Kirby" series since "Kirby's Dream Land" back on the original Game Boy handheld. When Kirby simply walks into the candy (like Starman) he will gain temporary invincibility powers, even against foes he wouldn't normally be able to inhale.

The candy usually appears in the form of a lollipop, even in later games in the series like "The Crystal Shards" (N64) and "Return to Dreamland" (Wii). Most notably, the candy created jumbo versions of Kirby in "Mass Attack" for the DS, allowing the player to guide up to ten jumbo Kirby clones across stages.
6. In "Banjo-Kazooie" (N64), what colour feathers allow the bird and bear to become temporarily invincible?

Answer: Gold

Banjo and Kazooie learn how to use Gold Feathers part-way through the third stage of the game, "Clanker's Cavern", and they're used to access areas which would normally be impossible to reach without some sort of divine intervention. That's where Bottles' technique, the Wonderwing, comes in handy. Normally, the duo is only able to carry ten Gold Feathers at a time due to their power.

They also return in the sequel, "Banjo-Tooie", and each feather lasts only a couple of seconds before being expended. Red Feathers, the only other ones in the game, are used to fly.
7. In "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" (N64), Link receives powers late in the game which protect him from enemy attacks. What goddess grants it to him in the desert?

Answer: Nayru

The magic attained in the Desert Colossus is all-powerful. While Din's Fire causes damage to all foes around Link and Farore's Wind allows Link to use magic as a checkpoint in deep dungeons, Nayru's Love, as it is called, grants Link temporary damage reduction against foes of all sorts.

This is particularly useful in the Desert Colossus when he's being attacked by creatures burrowing deep in the sands. The magic is found quite late in the game, mainly because it is quite powerful. A physical embodiment of Nayru later appears in the GBA title "Oracle of Ages".
8. In "Rock Band", what accumulated bonus can protect players from failing out of songs at crucial, difficult moments if implemented correctly?

Answer: Overdrive

While this was first utilized in the "Guitar Hero" series as Star Power, it was added into Harmonix's later venture, "Rock Band", to the same effect. By hitting certain streaks of indicated notes/lyrics, the player could raise their level of Overdrive and, when their bar was at least half-full, they could launch it by specific means (pressing a button, raising the neck of the guitar/bass, prompting by drum fills, lyrical cues, etc.) and not only earn more points, but protect themselves and their bandmates from failing out of a song. If a bandmate were to fail out, Overdrive could return them up to two times (and after the third strike the song would be failed). If multiple members used Overdrive at the same time, the score would compound even more, so planning would be key to reach the leaderboard.
9. In "Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure" (DS), Henry can enter a mech and attain invincibility when he activates which of the following?

Answer: Tea Time

As Hatsworth fights enemies and deals with the puzzle board on the bottom of the screen, major block removals can raise the Tea Time's Super Meter. When this fills up enough, Tea Time can be activated and Hatsworth will hop into a large, gold mech to fight through the stage.

At this point, nothing can hurt Henry-- only pitfalls will end the game-- until the mech explodes. Suffice to say that it is quite spectacular and indubitably marvelous.
10. Sometimes invincibility works on the enemies as well. In "Diablo III" (PC), what boss modifier allows major foes to be temporarily unaffected by all forms of damage?

Answer: Shielding

Shielding is a hassle to say the least. While only monsters in Nightmare Mode or more advanced can get it, it grants complete invincibility to all types of damage for its duration, and it can be switched onto other members of the mob. Coupled with the Invulnerable Minions modifier it has been a true test of strength and patience. Due to the difficulty of defeating these types of bosses, Blizzard had to nerf the properties of the modifier, removing it entirely if the boss was the last creature standing in the battle out of fairness.

In addition, it can no longer be paired with Invulnerable Minions or Extra Health or Healthlink. Thankfully.
