Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Banjo-Tooie', the third game (according to the series timeline) in the 'Banjo-Kazooie' series of games developed by Rareware for Nintendo 64 players, has a location called Hailfire Peaks. There, the heroes must fight dragons and compete in a kickball tournament. What kind of creatures are Banjo and Kazooie?

Answer: Banjo is a bear, Kazooie is a bird

Banjo first appeared in the Rareware game 'Diddy Kong Racing' before being given his own game in 1998. 'Banjo-Tooie' was actually the second game of the series released, in 2000, and Hailfire Peaks was a site that had been cut from the original 'Banjo-Kazooie' because the game was too long. Banjo is a brown honey bear, and Kazooie, his 'pet', is a kind of bird described as a red-crested breegull. She spends most of her time inside Banjo's trademark blue backpack.

As the name suggests, Hailfire peaks has both an ice side and a fire (molten lava) side. The mountain is controlled by two dragons, both of whom want pizza: Chilly Willy controls the fire side, while Chilli-Billi rules the ice.
2. Which game in Nintendo's 'Legend of Zelda' series involves releasing five sages from their temples (one of which is the Fire Temple) so that Link can defeat Ganondorf, who has become the King of Evil?

Answer: Ocarina of Time

There are quite a few games in this popular series, most of which feature Link as the protagonist who regularly has to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon (also known as Ganondorf). Another common element is the Triforce, a sacred object made from three golden triangles.

These smaller triangles are also called Triforces: one is the Triforce of Power, one of Wisdom, and one of Courage. Assembling all three of them into a large Triforce gives the player greatly increased powers. In 'Ocarina of Time', Ganondorf has the Triforce of Power, Zelda the Triforce of Wisdom, and Link the Triforce of Courage.
3. 'Star Fox 64' (created, surprisingly enough, for the Nintendo 64 game system, and titled 'Lylat' when released in Europe and Australia) includes a level called 'Out of the Frying Pan', which takes place above the lava fields of Solar. Which of the game's four methods of transport is used to fly across the lava and collect the rocks that rise up from it?

Answer: Arwing

The Arwing is a special aircraft used for most of this game, as well as others in the series. Not only is it highly maneuverable, it carries bombs and lasers which can be used to attack the enemy. The Landmaster resembles a tank, and is used in a few levels where transport across the surface is preferred over flight; similarly, the Blue Marine is used for underwater missions, since the Arwing cannot go there.

In multi-player mode, some characters can go on foot when it is appropriate.
4. A popular arcade game, later transferred to the NES system, involved up to four players, each of whom could select to be Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello or Raphael. The game required them to rescue their friend April from the evil Shredder, and the first level took place inside a burning building. Which of these is the name of the game being described?

Answer: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II

The coin-operated arcade game, released in 1989, was based on the popular animated television show that featured the fighting turtles, along with their guide, Splinter. The NES version was given the full title of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game" to make it clear that it duplicated as closely as possible the experience of the arcade game. Due to the release of multiple games and sequels on different platforms in different countries, the NES version had slightly different names in different countries, including 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' in Europe, and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' in Japan (where that title hadn't been used for the first game).
5. The 'Fire Emblem' series of games from Nintendo is described as a role-playing simulation game that takes place in a medieval setting. Which of these four is set several thousand years after the other three?

Answer: Awakening

'Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light', released in 1990 for the Famicon, was the first in this series of games which feature a magical object called a Fire Emblem. In this first game, it is a shield that bears five magical gems. It has other forms in later games. 'Gaiden', the second in the series, was released in 1992, also for the Famicon system. It shared some characters with the first game, but was set on a different continent. 'Mystery of the Emblem', released in 1994, changed its platform to the Super Famicon System. Its first part was a remake of the first game, and its second part continued the events.

All three of these were set at a much earlier time in the Fire Emblem universe than was the case for 'Awakening', released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS platform. It is set on the same continents as the others, but nearly 2000 years later. In the interim, the dragon Grima had tried to destroy the world, and was put into a lasting sleep when the leader of Ylisse was given a magical sword (Falchion) and shield (the Fire Emblem) by the dragon Naga. At the time of the game, Ylisse has recently been at war with Plegia, whose people worship Grima. Guess who's about to wake up and breathe some fire into events!
6. The game Sonic 2006, released as part of the celebrations of the franchise's 15th anniversary, includes a level called Flame Core. What type of creature is Sonic, who features as the hero of this game?

Answer: Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is the star character of the games developed by Sonic Team and released for a wide range of platforms. 'Sonic the Hedgehog' is usually referred to as 'Sonic 2006' or 'Sonic '06' to distinguish it from the earlier games, the TV show, the manga and the comic book series all featuring Sonic, and was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Playable characters include three hedgehogs (Sonic, Shadow and Silver) and, in some levels, Tails (a fox with two tails who features in a number of the Sonic games), Knuckles (a grumpy echidna) and Rouge (a bat).
7. Wario, originally an antagonist in Nintendo's Mario games, became the central character of his own game in 'Wario Land', released for the Game Boy in 1994. What was the name of the helmet he could obtain that let him shoot flames from it?

Answer: Dragon Helmet

In this game, Wario (having been ejected from Mario's castle) decides to get a castle of his own, and travels to Kitchen Island, where he attempts to find the treasure and coins that have been hidden there by the Brown Sugar Pirates. At the end, he gives the genie all the coins he has collected, and in return (depending on how many have been found during the game) gets anything from a birdhouse up to a castle. Complete success involves finding all the treasures and having a lot of extra coins as well - you can get the entire planet!

Along the way, three helmets offer useful extra abilities: the Bull Helmet gives Wario extra strength and allows him to stick to ceilings; the Jet Helmet increases his running speed and the distance through which he can soar; the Dragon Helmet allows him to shoot long flames against enemies and to destroy blocks.
8. Many games in the 'Mega Man' series from Capcom have a fire level where you must overcome a fire-using opponent. What is the name of the quite large fire boss in 'Mega Man X', who can shoot flames from his arm, spray oil from his trunk to create a hazard in play, and change the direction of the conveyor belt?

Answer: Flame Mammoth

All of these are fire bosses in the series, but it is Flame Mammoth whom you confront after working your way through a level in which spiked robots are on patrol, where you must dodge around the lava that drips from overhead, and where you are confronted with attackers called Hoganmers, who can only be taken out when they actually attack you.

After all that, you come up against Flame Mammoth! The battle requires you to dodge his attacks, while delivering shots from your weapon as quickly as you can (which is not very fast, since it takes time to recharge between shots). Once you succeed, you are rewarded with your very own flame thrower.
9. An interesting feature of the 'Disney's Magical Quest' game from Capricorn is that the central character wears different outfits on each of the four levels to gain useful powers. Who wears a firefighter's uniform on level three of this game?

Answer: Mickey Mouse

Mickey, the only Disney character in the list of possible answers, starts off in his familiar clothing, which allows him to spin-throw certain objects. On level two, he wears a magician's outfit and can shoot magical blasts at his enemies. The firefighter's uniform on level three lets him shoot streams of water at opponents, and the mountaineer's outfit in level four gives him equipment that includes a grappling hook which can be used to climb efficiently as well as being useful for bashing enemies.

The third level is a fire level, and the water stream comes in useful for putting out the flames and clearing a path.
10. One level of the Genesis version of a video game first released in 1993 is titled 'The Escape', and features the central character leaping around a lava-filled cave, dodging rolling balls of lava as well as trying to avoid falling to his death as he moves from one platform to another and gathers genie tokens and hearts. Who is the titular hero of the game that features this level, commonly referred to by players as "the one where everyone dies" due to its notorious difficulty?

Answer: Aladdin

In this platform game based on the 1992 Disney film, Aladdin is trying to save the city of Agrabah from the Grand Vizier Jafar. His quest is hindered by desert animals, palace guards and a whole range of obstacles. After fighting his way through the city, he must escape from the palace dungeon, then survive the Cave of Wonders (a stage that culminates in The Escape), collect the Genie's lamp to foil Jafar's plans, and then defeat the Vizier himself. Aladdin has a scimitar for close-range fighting, and collects apples which can be thrown for battle at a distance.
