Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which "Legend of Zelda" game will a sail allow you to navigate the seas in the King of Red Lions?

Answer: Wind Waker

A talking boat painted red and with a lion's head at the bow, The King of Red Lions is known for being the main mode of transport in "Wind Waker" (GCN). When you pick up a Sail at Windfall Island you can go whichever way the wind directs on the high seas and, once you claim the Wind Waker, you can go pretty much anywhere.

The King of Red Lions makes cameo appearances in the "Super Smash Bros." series and in "Hyrule Warriors Legends".
2. Created by Ubisoft Montreal, the fourth "Assassin's Creed" game, set on the high seas, went by what subtitle?

Answer: Black Flag

After success in the Crusades, Renaissance Italy, and early America, the "Assassin's Creed" series turned to a new protagonist-- Edward Kenway-- on the high seas of the Caribbean. This time, you could sail between Cuba, Florida, Jamaica, and other locations; the game allowed for exploration on the open seas and pillaging/assassination missions on land. You helm the Spanish ship Jackdaw during the game.
3. The first stage of which Donkey Kong game is set on a pirate ship?

Answer: Donkey Kong Country 2

Piloted to Kong Island by King K. Rool, Gangplank Galleon ended up being a beginners area in this sequel to the SNES game "Donkey Kong Country" which saw DK captured by Kremlings and Diddy and Dixie Kong fighting to retrieve him. The first stage of the game almost entirely took place on/in the shipwreck, but the subsequent stages also had pirate elements (the ship crashes into a lava area and a bayou) before the Kongs advanced onward and upward. Pirate elements returned in "Donkey Kong Country Returns" (Wii), but not on K. Rool's account.
4. Developed by Rare, what 2018 multiplayer game allowed players to work together to operate a pirate ship to complete voyages?

Answer: Sea of Thieves

Available on PC and Xbox One, "Sea of Thieves" allowed players to work alone or together to operate the different workings of a ship to achieve pirate goals, most of which involved enhancing ships via cosmetic means. Missions, known as voyages, allowed players to battle in close combat or ship-to-ship depending on the requirements. Evidently, the idea for a pirate game from Rare dated back to developments as early as the late 1990s.
5. If not defeated in one go, Bowser's children will take off in a flying ship in what NES video game?

Answer: Super Mario Bros. 3

Without fail, you will be taking off in airships in "Super Mario Bros. 3", and while there's no real option to pilot them, you can bring them down and move on to subsequent stages of the game by beating the Koopa housed within. That said, if you fail to make it to the end of the stage and complete the task at hand, the airship will take off and hover at a random point on the map, possibly even requiring you to beat more levels to reach it.
6. You ride on the deck of the Black Pearl in what popular PlayStation 2 title released in 2006?

Answer: Kingdom Hearts 2

The "Kingdom Hearts" series, while featuring original elements, draws much of its content from the films of the Disney canon and specific portions of the "Final Fantasy" video game series (also made by Square Enix), so "Pirates of the Caribbean" was a natural fit for inclusion in this sequel.

While Captain Jack Sparrow can be an added party member, you can also visit many of the settings of "Curse of the Black Pearl". It was popular enough to be announced as a location in "Kingdom Hearts III" as well.
7. Although it's an early option, you need to learn Sailing from your Technology Tree to explore the seas in what PC game?

Answer: Sid Meyer's Civilization VI

Although you can move this along faster by building a city on a coastline and triggering a Eureka, completing the Sailing tech will allow you to create Fishing Boats and Galleys for your civilization, allowing you to explore the map quicker and better establish yourself overall. Further improvements can be made in this field if you progress to Celestial Navigation, Shipbuilding, Cartography, and so on. Working as certain civilizations may, of course, give bonuses or alternative units to these techs.
8. While you may not take it for a ride, you do bring a ship to the surface of the water to access a route to the Stoneship Age in what point-and-click PC puzzle game?

Answer: Myst

Commonly regarded as the second of four accessible worlds in "Myst", the Stoneship Age is accessed by raising the sunken sailboat near the game's starting point by raising a model ship from a small pool in the center of the island (using constellations and puzzle pedestals).

When the ship is raised, you can head inside to access the portal books to the Age, an island environment with a shipwreck and outlying islands.
9. During the 'Shipwrecked' DLC for this 2013 game, you can craft sails to boat around in new biomes. What's the game's name?

Answer: Don't Starve

Created as a Tim Burton-esque survival game, "Don't Starve" created an open world in which a player needed to lead their character, Wilson, to survive against supernatural creatures and his own harsh environment. The 'Shipwrecked' DLC was the fourth released for the game and it introduced boating mechanics, allowing the player to navigate the seas while continuing to survive and, well, not starve. Amongst the craftable items introduced were a variety of sails, many of which improved shipfaring and aided in the ability to do other tasks at the same time.

This expansive DLC was released in late 2015.
10. What pirate-themed Wii puzzle game released in 2007 featured point-and-click puzzles set on ships and in pirate hideouts?

Answer: Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

An early title for the system, "Zack & Wiki" was somewhat of an introductory game in the console's large library. Developed by Capcom, the game ended up being a launch title in certain regions, and while it wasn't as popular as hoped, it did feature many unique puzzles enhanced by the pirate theme and unique mechanics created by the pirate duo at the helm.

Although none of the stages involved actually navigating a pirate ship, the theme pervaded as you took on the role as the newest recruits of 'The Sea Rabbits' in an attempt to reach a Treasure Island.
