Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the original "Super Mario Bros." (NES), the first enemy you're likely to see on the first stage is which of these?

Answer: Goomba

World 1-1 is pretty famous amongst old-school video gamers; this bright and colourful basic level is the introductory stage for Mario's first platformer game, and it all starts with a Goomba, the game's simplest foe, which can be defeated with a single jump on the head. Goombas have since become one of the series' most common enemies and several variations can be seen across the decades.

The first level also sees Koopas and Piranha Plants at different points.
2. In "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" you're tasked with entering the Great Deku Tree, but not until you do which of these first?

Answer: Acquire a sword and shield

"Ocarina of Time" begins with Link waking up in bed in Kokiri Forest, and after he's summoned to meet with the Great Deku Tree, he apparently needs to come across his own sword and shield, obviously items that a child needs when talking to a giant tree.

The sword can be found in a treasure chest hidden deep within a forest cave, but to get the Kokiri Shield you need to accumulate 40 rupees. You can do that by searching the tall grass and venturing around Kokiri Village.
3. The first "Resident Evil" game traps you in an elaborate mansion, but your first order of business is locating who of these?

Answer: Kenneth J. Sullivan

The game beings with you, playing as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, being chased into the Spencer Mansion after a mysterious zombie outbreak, and within only a few minutes of searching rooms shooting off from the main lobby, you're likely to locate fellow S.T.A.R.S. team member Kenneth J. Sullivan being eaten by a zombie.

He's beyond saving, of course, but other members of the special task force can be found throughout the game and several can make it out alive if you're lucky. Several will not.
4. "Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow" don't begin until you locate which of these people, usually searching for Pokémon out of town?

Answer: Professor Oak

The original "Pokémon" games will start you off in Pallet Town where, upon waking up, you'll be invited to meet with Professor Oak at his lab. He's not there though-- he's actually just outside of town searching through tall grass. After you find him he'll bring you back to his lab where you can collect your very first Pokémon, a choice between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle in "Red" and "Blue" or Pikachu in "Yellow", have your first battle, and receive your Pokédex before an adventure.
5. "Portal" begins with which of these generally insignificant yet important tasks?

Answer: You need to escape your holding cell

You wake up sealed away in a holding cell on floor 00 in "Portal", but with a Portal Gun in hand, you can shoot at one of the clear walls and make your escape with a single wormhole. This, of course, is the first experience you'll have with the portal gun, and with GLaDOS' urging and a bit of experimenting with physics and portals, you should be able to make it through all the test chambers for some cake...if you're lucky. (Note: there's no cake.)
6. "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories" is interesting in that the game commences with which of the following?

Answer: A psychiatric evaluation

"Silent Hill", as a series, has usually prided itself on providing survival horror with a severe psychological bent, and this one went straight to the source when released on the Nintendo Wii, forcing its players to make decisions during a written psychiatric evaluation that recurred throughout the story. For these, all you needed to do was pick between two options in a vague question, but the choices made would impact some inevitability in the story in some way, perhaps bringing your own fears to the forefront in a dynamic way.
7. Your plane crashes into the ocean but you make it to an island where your first order of business is riding in a bathysphere. Where are you going?

Answer: Rapture

All of this takes place in the first few minutes of "BioShock" in which you head over the sea in the 1960s and, unfortunately, crash into it. On the plus side, you survive the crash and find yourself at an island entrance to the city of Rapture, and after you take a bathysphere down into the depths of this underwater, Ayn Rand-inspired dystopia, you'll come to discover that its inhabitants are dangerous, its delights are powerful, and its Daddies are...big. Rapture returned in "BioShock 2".
8. In the beginning of "Dead Space 2", Isaac Clarke needs to make his way out of a medical ward, but what seems to be inconveniencing him?

Answer: Straitjacket

"Dead Space 2" puts the player in a bit of a bind from the get-go. After the horrifying events of the first game as set on the USS Ishimura, Isaac Clarke awakens in the Sprawl, a space station on the moon Titan, where a man tries to help him out of a medical ward. Said man is quickly transformed into a Necromorph and what follows is a race through the area wearing a straitjacket. You can later have it removed by a scientist further along (he's wielding a scalpel, of course) and the nightmare can recommence.
9. You awaken in a train, but that train seems to be plunging over the edge of a snowy cliff in the start of your game. Who are you?

Answer: Nathan Drake

"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" definitely starts in media res as Nathan Drake awakens strapped into his seat in a crashed train car. The first chapter of this game, thus, involves climbing up and out of the cars as they detach and plummet down the cliffside, and once you reach the top and get out of the death trap you can see how it's come to that point.

This game follows Drake has he heads to Shangri-La, this time on the trail that Marco Polo allegedly took.
10. One step at a time. In what game does The Boy's world build and his story narrate itself with every step he takes?

Answer: Bastion

A unique role-playing game, "Bastion" puts the player in the role of The Boy who, while he doesn't speak in-game, seems to have his own story unfold every step of the way, aided by the intricate detail brought on by a dynamic narrator. The game's world creates itself as you move around, creating the illusion that you are tenuously linked to building your own adventure, even though there's no real randomness to each stage.

The Kid awakens and goes to the Bastion following a horrible event called The Calamity, and the game continues from there.
