Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the opening screen of this 1996 game, you can squish the forehead, ears, nose, and mouth of the titular character. What game is it?

Answer: Super Mario 64

Turning on "Super Mario 64" would bring you to a screen of Mario's head and, before you pressed Start to enter the game, allow you to shift some of his facial features around with the analog stick and A button, creating funny faces that could stick until you released the Z button.

The added feature was popular enough to reappear in "Mario Party" (N64) as a mini-game called 'Face Lift', in which you had to match Bowser's squished face using an exemplar and your own copy.
2. In what Nintendo 64 game did the final boss battle (possibly) feature a fight against Andross' head?

Answer: Star Fox 64

Planet Venom is the final stage of "Star Fox 64", and depending on how you get there you'll fight one of two forms of the evil Andross. The first, arriving via the Planet Bolse, will allow you to fight a fake version of Andross while the second, arriving from Area 6, allows you to fight Andross' head and, eventually, his brain. Andross' head also appeared in previous iterations of the game, ultimately becoming an assist trophy in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" (Wii).
3. On which console could you create an avatar head for use in games like "Guitar Hero World Tour", "Tetris Party", and "FIFA 08"?

Answer: Wii

The Mii, as it is known, is an oft-playable avatar of the player created from the main menu of the Wii console. The hardware could be loaded with a certain amount of Miis, all representing different people playing (or not), and each customized with different features; the idea of this avatar later made its way to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Miis made a reappearance on the Wii U console and, once again, were used in several games, many of which were first-part (like "Mario Kart 8", "New Super Luigi U", and "Nintendo Land").
4. DK Mode was an optional cheat first found in what James Bond game release?

Answer: Goldeneye

DK Mode, better known as 'Big Head Mode', was unlocked in the easiest of ways-- you only needed to beat the game's shortest level, Runway, on the easiest difficulty in a very short amount of time. The cheat was only used for cosmetic purposes; it would literally make your character's head (and any other heads) larger, making all heads easier to aim at.

The creators, Rare, also created the "Donkey Kong Country" series; the name DK Mode is named after Donkey Kong, the big ape with the big head and smaller body. "Goldeneye" was released on the Nintendo 64, winning Nintendo's 'Game of the Year' award.
5. Although the head underneath is never seen, in what series does a character named Pyramid Head skulk around, viciously murdering people with his oversized knife?

Answer: Silent Hill

Pyramid Head made his first appearance in the PlayStation 2 game "Silent Hill 2" as one of the big bad bosses trouncing around the foggy destination of the title. In this game, James Sunderland experiences some weird goings-on relating to the death of his wife and, as it turns out, Silent Hill is the perfect place to exacerbate some hidden psychological woes. Pyramid Head became such a popular metaphor in the game that he became a notable icon in horror gaming, appearing in most of the later sequels and moreso in the "Silent Hill" film series.
6. It makes sense that their heads are bigger than their...erm...bodies, but it stems from the fact that Peashooters, Blovers, and Marigolds aren't human. In what game would you use them?

Answer: Plants Vs. Zombies

All three are plants used to protect your home from zombies in the very first "Plants Vs. Zombies" game (originally on the PC). Although these are only a few on the roster, the game's most notable plant, the Sunflower, seems to have the most prominent head of all, likely to increase surface area and take in more sun-- the necessary currency for creating more plants on your lawn, pool, or roof.

The game was popular enough to warrant a sequel released in 2013. It has since become one of PopCap Games' most popular casual offerings (like "Bejeweled" and "Peggle").
7. Kode 321-321 allowed you to play as Goro, Johnny Cage, and Raiden, all with big heads, in what famous arcade and console fighting title released in 1997?

Answer: Mortal Kombat 4

"Mortal Kombat 4" was the first in the series made in 3D, and as such it made the leap from arcades to home consoles, appearing on the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. Featuring many classic characters on its roster including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Jax, it was actually the first to add weapons, something that would add more graphic violence as the series went on.

The game also featured an extensive list of possible cheat codes. Inserting 321-321 on the Kode screen, of course, made big head mode. Alternately 123-123 granted a one-hit win on any stage.
8. Vault-Tec Bobbleheads appear as collectibles in what open-world game released in 2008?

Answer: Fallout 3

While Vault-Tec Bobbleheads are quite rare (only twenty appear throughout the game) they can be extremely useful as power-ups for your character, increasing a stat or skill with each one found. In addition, collecting them all will result in trophies/achievements depending on your console of choice (the game was released on Xbox 360 and PS3).

The bobbleheads take the form of Vault-Boy, a cartoonish character who appears throughout the game (notably on the Pip-Boy and anything created by Vault-Tec). You can find your collected bobbleheads in one of two places in the game, depending on your progression.
9. Which 2005 Nintendo DS game containing thinking puzzles featured the large, disembodied head of Dr. Kawashima giving players instructions?

Answer: Brain Age

"Brain Age", one of the top sellers on the Nintendo DS, was a boon for the handheld device during a time when casual gamers were becoming acquainted with Nintendo's brand. "Brain Age" allowed users to participate in lateral thinking games designed to activate the cerebral cortex-- everything from reading challenges to word puzzles to hand-eye-coordination games. Progress was counted up by the day; players could gain new games and rewards by following through with their training continuously. A sequel, "Brain Age 2", showed up within a year.

It was also the first Nintendo DS game to appear on the Wii U Virtual Console.
10. Now's the chance to get your actual head in the game. Which of these devices would allow your image to appear on-screen?

Answer: EyeToy

The EyeToy, first released in 2003, was a camera designed to plug into your PlayStation 2 to take pictures during the game. It functioned as a rudimentary Kinect or PlayStation Eye in that it worked for a handful of games but, otherwise, was used to take still images (or relay video) appearing in the background of "Dance Dance Revolution" sessions. Nonetheless, a number of games under the "EyeToy" label were released over the years, but the idea never really gained ground until the advent of motion-controlled gaming with the Wii, prompting other developers to create Xbox's Kinect and PlayStation's Eye, etc.
