Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Super Mario Bros.

The first installment of the franchise, the side-scrolling video game "Super Mario Bros.", was released by Nintendo in 1985. Mario and, in multiplayer mode, his brother Luigi traversed the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool and free the kingdom by defeating the invader King Bowser of the Koopa tribe.

It was not Mario's first appearance as he previously appeared in the 1981 "Donkey Kong" (named Jumpman initially), the 1982 "Donkey Kong Jr." and (along with Luigi) the 1983 "Mario Bros.". Nor was the 2023 animated film the first featuring the video game - that was the 1993 live-action film of the same name, which was deemed a commercial failure. Nearly forty years later, the 2023 film achieved over a billion dollars in sales, breaking various records in the process.
2. Street Fighter

The first "Street Fighter" video game from Capcom came out in 1987, although the 1994 film was an adaptation of the best-selling 1991 sequel "Street Fighter II: The World Warrior". It was a two-person close-quarters combat game where the first to win two rounds is declared the winner. An arcade game, the controls were a combination of a joystick and six combat buttons.

The combo system of moves established by the series became a standard feature in other fighting games.
3. Sonic the Hedgehog

The 2020 film "Sonic the Hedgehog" was the first of a series based on the "Sonic the Hedgehog" video game series. The first instalment of the platformer game was released in 1991 with the same title. It followed an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with supersonic speed called Sonic as he battled the mad scientist Eggman and his plans for world domination. Sonic was Sega's answer to the dominance at the time of Nintendo's "Mario" franchise.
4. Mortal Kombat

The 1995 martial arts fantasy film "Mortal Kombat" was based on the video game franchise of the same name. The first of the games was released as an arcade game in 1992 and was developed by Midway Games. Ten characters competed in a martial arts tournament.

It introduced a five-button control system along with the joystick control. It sparked controversy for its gory finishing moves, named Fatalities, which contributed to the formation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board and its video game ratings.
5. Warcraft

The 2016 action fantasy film "Warcraft" was based on the "Warcraft" video game series. The original game "Warcraft: Orcs & Humans" was released by Blizzard Entertainment in 1994 for MS-DOS. The series started as a real-time strategy game (RTS), as opposed to being turn-based, and then expanded into massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) through "World of Warcraft". Set on the planet Azeroth, this RTS version had the player (in single player mode) undertaking a series of missions.

The multiplayer mode was about destroying enemy forces. The game required careful building up of resources and forces to achieve objectives.
6. Resident Evil

The 2002 film was the first in a series of "Resident Evil" films based loosely on the video games series. Elements of the video games "Resident Evil" and "Resident Evil 2" formed part of the 2002 film. The first in the games series came out in 1996. It was a survival horror game which involved exploring, puzzle solving and managing resources as well as action gameplay. Produced by Capcom for PlayStation, it has been ported onto other platforms.
7. Silent Hill

The first of a film series, the 2006 supernatural horror film "Silent Hill" was based mainly on the first game (released in 1999 for PlayStation, published by Konami) with elements of the second and third games. The game was of the survival horror genre with the player guiding the protagonist through a monster-infested town trying to find his adopted daughter whilst collecting maps, objects and firearms along the way. Lots of fog about which helped with the rendering of the surroundings.
8. Hitman

Both the 2007 "Hitman" film and its 2015 reboot were notionally based on the "Hitman" video game series with the mysterious assassin Agent 47. The first in the series was "Hitman: Codename 47" published by Eidos Interactive for Microsoft Windows in 2000.

A stealth video game, the gameplay normally involved finding ways to reach and eliminate the target. The stealthier the kills were, the better rewarded the player was. Financial penalties applied for lapses which hindered future assignments. It helped that Agent 47 was a genetically-enhanced human clone.
9. Assassin's Creed

Although the 2016 film "Assassin's Creed" was based on the Ubisoft video game series, only the game universe was used, not the storyline. In the 2007 game "Assassin's Creed", the player was a modern-day man who relived the memories of a 12th century assassin through the Animus device.

His ancestor was involved in a struggle between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order in the Holy Land. The player tried to acquire the information required to carry out each tasked assassination. The level of stealth employed affected whether he presence attracted attention. Skills included stealth, combat and parkour abilities.
10. Detective Pikachu

Developed as a spin-off of the "Pokémon" franchise, the first release of "Detective Pikachu" was a shorter, downloadable version of the game in 2016. The full version was released in 2018. It was an adventure game for the Nintendo 3DS family developed by Creatures Inc. where the object was to solve various mysteries. This was done by the player's character accompanying Detective Pikachu around scenes gathering clues and interviewing people and Pokémon. The 2019 fantasy comedy film "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" was a loose adaptation of the 2016 game.
