Super Mario Bros. 3 Trivia Questions

1. This game introduces which popular Mario suit?

From Quiz
"Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: Tanooki

Boomerang is an existing suit now but there was no boomerang suit in the release of "Super Mario Bros. 3". It's the same with cat suit; it made its first appearance in "Super Mario 3D World".

2. What world features the only level that can be entered after successfully completing it?

From Quiz Let's Play 44: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 4

Answer: World 5

World 5 features the Tower that connects the ground to the sky. The Tower is the only stage that can be accessed after successfully completing it. It is also the only stage in the game that, after beating it, when you go back into it you will begin at the ending (if you are coming from the Sky and going back toward the Ground).

3. How many forms of attack does Bowser have if, after entering Bowser's chamber, you fly to the left via a P-Wing to another Bowser chamber, then fly back to the original Bowser chamber?

From Quiz Let's Play 42: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 3

Answer: One

Provided you enter the correct Bowser fight chamber (you will know because the brick floor is entirely flush), you can fly to the left and find a second Bowser chamber. Do not land on the floor. Rather, once Bowser enters the second chamber, fly back to the original chamber. Then Bowser will not be able to shoot fireballs, and he will only be able to use his jump attack on you. He will make the sounds of blowing fire, but nothing will come out. You have to have the P-Wing to do this trick.

4. What is the only enemy from the original "Super Mario Bros." to NOT appear in "Super Mario Bros. 3"?

From Quiz Let's Play 40: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 2

Answer: Firebar

"Super Mario Bros." had the following enemies: Blooper, Bullet Bill, Buzzy Beetle, Cheep-Cheep, Firebar, Goomba, Hammer Bros., Koopa Paratroopa, Koopa Troopa, Lakitu, Piranha Plant, Podoboo, Spiny, and Spiny Egg. In addition, "Super Mario Bros." also featured two bosses, Bower and "Fake Bowser". The entire enemy roster from the original game was used for "Super Mario Bros. 3" with the sole exception of the Firebar.

5. How do you get twenty eight p-wings?

From Quiz Let's Play 04: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 1

Answer: Beat the game

After you defeat Bowser, the credits will roll. At the end, you get a message saying "The End". Start the game again (do not reset), and you will have twenty eight P-Wings in your inventory. The only requirement to get these wings is for you to defeat the game.

6. When was this classic introduced to the United States?

From Quiz Entering the Classic: "Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: 1990

The games were released in Japan, United States, and Europe in 1988, 1990, and 1991 respectively. The year 1993 is irrelevant.

7. What kingdom was World 1?

From Quiz Super Mario Brothers 3

Answer: Grass Land

Where Mario begins his journey.

8. Whenever you play a fortress level, you'll encounter one of Bowser's henchmen at the end. What's his name?

From Quiz Don't Let's Be Beastly to the Goombas

Answer: Boom Boom

Boom Boom is a Koopa who appears at the end of every fortress, and in some worlds, you get to encounter him twice. He can be defeated by jumping on his head three times, but you have to be quick as he'll either run around or worse, start flying. When you defeat him, he drops a Magic Ball and doors on the map disappear, making other levels easier to access.

9. What is World 9 called?

From Quiz "Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: Warp Zone

Warp Land and Warp World are not existing. Warp Whistle is the item that takes you to the Warp Zone.

10. What is the minimum amount of coins that must be collected to activate all seven White Mushroom Houses?

From Quiz Let's Play 44: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 4

Answer: 282

There are seven levels, one for each of the first seven worlds, that if you get the minimum amount of coins for that level, you will activate a White Mushroom House. This is the coin total per world and level that you must get to activate the White Mushroom House: World 1-4: 44 - P-Wing World 2-2: 30 - Anchor World 3-8: 38 - P-Wing World 4-2: 22 - Anchor World 5-5: 24 - P-Wing World 6-7: 78 - Anchor World 7-2: 46 - P-Wing Total: 282

11. In the "Super Mario All-Stars" remake for the SNES, Nintendo changes the animals that the kings had been transformed into. How many of the kings' animal forms are from "Super Mario Bros. 2".

From Quiz Let's Play 40: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 2

Answer: Three

There are three cameos from "Super Mario Bros. 2" in the Allstars version. For some reason when Nintendo released "Super Mario Bros. 3" as part of "Super Mario All Stars" they changed what the kings were transformed too. Here is a complete list of what the kings were and what they were changed too: World 1: The dog is changed to a Cobrat (snake from "Super Mario Bros. 2"). World 2: The spider is changed to a Hoopstar ("Super Mario Bros. 2). World 3: Spike is changed to a Dino-Rhino ("Super Mario World". World 4: A Dinosaur is changed to Donkey Kong Jr. World 5: A Bird is changed to an Albatross ("Super Mario Bros. 2"). World 6: A seal is changed to Monty Mole ("Super Mario World)". World 7: Venis Fire Trap is changed to Yoshi. According to Miyamoto, the idea of Yoshi (though not necessarily his present day design) dates back to the original "Super Mario Bros." but was not included for technological reasons. In "Super Mario Bros. 3" Miyamoto wanted to include Yoshi but did not, waiting for "Super Mario World". Yoshi finally gets his appearance in the remake. Another idea that did not come to fruition was having Mario changed into a centaur.

12. What is the importance of the Music Box?

From Quiz 'Super Mario Bros. 3' Item Crazy

Answer: It puts all the Hammer Bros. levels on the map to sleep for a number of turns

Upon being used, all of the Hammerhead Bros. levels (you probably know them as "those annoying camel guys") will go to sleep for a limited amount of turns. This way you can walk through them without having to face them in battle. Very useful when you're tiny and don't want to risk losing another life.

13. What kingdom was World 2?

From Quiz Super Mario Brothers 3

Answer: Desert Land

One of the features in this world was the quicksand.

14. Noel Coward once sang, "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" and the same might apply to plumbers as well. There's a very angry sun who's out to get you in two of the worlds. Which worlds are they?

From Quiz Don't Let's Be Beastly to the Goombas

Answer: 2 and 8

The Angry Sun is content to just sit in the sky and glare at you for a bit, but he will chase you after a certain point in an unnamed level in World 2. the only way he can be defeated is by throwing a Koopa shell or hammer at him, although he's fairly easy to avoid once you figure out his attack pattern. Unfortunately for Mario, the Angry Sun reappears in Bowser's domain in Level 2 of World 8, though he can be avoided if you use one of the Warp Pipes.

15. Which enemies make their first appearance in this game?

From Quiz "Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: Koopalings

Baby Bowsers are not existing but Bowser Jr. is considered a baby Bowser. Goombas first appeared in the first "Super Mario Bros.". Conkdors first appeared in "Super Mario 3D World" released way after this game.

16. It is possible for one of the Koopa Kid's airships to move behind a rock, and if you do not have a hammer to break the rock there is no way to proceed in the game. What two worlds can this happen on?

From Quiz Let's Play 44: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 4

Answer: Worlds 2 and 3

On World 2 and 3, it is possible for the airship to move behind a rock, and if you do not have a hammer to break the rock or warp whistles to warp out of the world, the game becomes impassable. Fortunately this is a rare occurrence, but still quite possible. The only way to resolve the issue without the hammer or warp whistle is to reset the NES and begin all over (if you're playing the NES that is. If you're playing the SNES version you can simply save the game and then start over).

17. How many of Bowser's children appear in "Super Mario Bros. 3"?

From Quiz Let's Play 42: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 3

Answer: Seven

The Koopalings first appear in "Super Mario Bros. 3" on the NES. They have appeared in several games since then, including "Super Mario World", "New Super Mario Bros.", "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", and several others. In 2002, we learn of another child of Bowser named Bowser Jr. However, Bowser Jr. is a much later addition to the Mario canon, and for several years the Koopalings were the only show in town.

18. How many times did Nintendo issue distinct releases of "Super Mario Bros. 3" for the NES?

From Quiz Let's Play 40: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 2

Answer: Two

Thare are two different versions of the NES version of "Super Mario Bros. 3". In the re-release, the world names were changed, there is a slightly revised text drom Toad's N-Spade game, and also a rewrite of one of the Princess's letters, where she says "Goomba's Shoe" instead of the original "Kuribo's Shoe".

19. What is the maximum number of anchors you can get in this game in one play through?

From Quiz Let's Play 04: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 1

Answer: Six

Three anchors are available in a White Mushroom House in Worlds 2, 4, and 6. If you use the three warp whistles to play World 6 an additional three times, you can pick up three additional anchors, making a grand total of six anchors.

20. What kingdom was World 3?

From Quiz Super Mario Brothers 3

Answer: Water Land

This was where Mario could use the Frog Suit.

21. What is the name of the (really annoying) foe who flies around on a cloud and throws spiked balls at you?

From Quiz Don't Let's Be Beastly to the Goombas

Answer: Lakitu

Lakitu is a Koopa who rides on a cloud, and first appears in World 3. He chucks spiked balls at you which are actually Spiny Eggs. The red ones hatch into Spinies, and these beasts can only be killed with fireballs or the Super Star. It is possible to kill Lakitu by jumping on him. When you defeat Morton Koopa Junior in the second airship level, Princess Toadstool/Peach gives you Lakitu's Cloud, which enables you to skip a level (though if you die, you have to do the level you skipped).

22. There is a port of this game. What is it called?

From Quiz "Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: "Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3"

This port was on the Gameboy Advance. Believe it or not, the same graphics and sounds were used for the "Super Mario All-Stars" version of this game.

23. How many fortresses are in the entire game?

From Quiz Let's Play 44: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 4

Answer: 14 & fourteen

There are fourteen fortresses in the game. World 6 has the most fortresses with three. World 1, World 2, and World 8 have the fewest with only one a piece. World 3, World 4, World 5, and World 7 all have two a piece. World 2 has the only Fortress where Boom Boom has lava as part of his lair. World 8 has the only Boom Boom that has a conveyor belt in his lair.

24. How do you get a music box to put the Hammer Bros. to sleep?

From Quiz Let's Play 04: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 1

Answer: Princess Peach gives you one in a letter

There are only two ways to get a music box. Princess Peach will give you one in a letter, or some of the Hammer Bros. on the overworld map will give you one.

25. One can "go behind the scenes" by holding "down" on a platform. What color does the platform have to be?

From Quiz Entering the Classic: "Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: White

This cheat is to be used to access a Warp Whistle in 1-3. This is not a permanent effect.

26. What appropriately named item will allow you to keep those airships on the ground and easily in your reach?

From Quiz 'Super Mario Bros. 3' Item Crazy

Answer: Anchor

Anchor! Pretty easy, I guess you didn't even have to have ever played the game to get that. Just testing you, though! The only two ways to get an anchor are (1) collecting all the coins on a white airship (or, "coin ship"), and (2) obtaining them in an uncovered white mushroom house on any of the evenly-numbered worlds. If you don't have one, you'll find yourself chasing after the airship every time you don't beat it. Yes, that gets quite annoying.

27. What kingdom was World 4?

From Quiz Super Mario Brothers 3

Answer: Giant Land

This is where everything was bigger than Mario. Also, in this world, he could make everything the same size as himself by going through a door.

28. Which suit introduced in the game has the ability to fly?

From Quiz "Super Mario Bros. 3"

Answer: P-Wing

The P-Wing suit has been used in many "Super Mario" games. These games include "Super Mario 3D Land", "New Super Mario Bros. 2" and even in "Mario Kart 8" as a DLC kart.

29. What is the only fight against a Koopaling to take place on even ground?

From Quiz Let's Play 44: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 4

Answer: Lemmy's Fight

Five of the seven fights against the Koopa kids take place on uneven ground. Both Wendy's fight and Lemmy's fight are on even ground. Both Wendy and Lemmy are also the only two that throw projectiles at you that remain on screen for an extended period of time. Wendy throws up to three red and white rings and Lemmy throws up to three green balls at you. Lemmy is the only Koopaling to be riding something in his boss fight (he rides a green ball).

30. What is the name of the Koopa you must face at the end of every fortress?

From Quiz Let's Play 42: "Super Mario Bros. 3" Part 3

Answer: Boom Boom

Boom Boom flails his arms and attacks Mario by running back and forth across the screen. He can also fly. You defeat him by jumping on him three times, or hitting him with Fire Flowers or Hammers. His only game appearance is in "Super Mario Bros. 3". "Super Mario Bros. 3"'s game manual describes the Boom Boom this way: "This is the boss that controls the Mini-Fortresses. Boom Boom hurls himself at Mario with his arms swinging. Mario needs to jump on Boom Boom three times to defeat him. Be careful though, Boom Boom gets quicker every time he gets jumped on." "Super Mario Bros. 3" is generally regarded as one of the best titles in the NES's deep and varied catalog. Ignoring the weird detour of "Super Mario Bros. 2", "Super Mario Bros. 3" goes back to the basics, and makes everything about the original "Super Mario Bros." bigger, better, and more epic.
