Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I told you my horse was a "daisy cutter", I would mean which of these?

Answer: my horse has low leg action when moving

A daisy cutter is a horse with low leg action, especially when trotting. This can also be described as having "ground hugging" action*.

Action is a term used to describe the way a horse moves. For example, if I said, "That horse has high action", I would mean the horse lifts his feet up high off the ground.
2. Your friend describes a horse as having a parrot-mouth. What does she mean?

Answer: the horse has an overbite

A parrot-mouth is a term used to describe a horse whose top teeth are further forward than his bottom teeth, giving him an overbite. There can be different degrees of this problem, with the most extreme cases resulting in severe difficulty eating and drinking.
3. My horse "brushes". What does this mean?

Answer: she knocks the inside of one leg with the opposite leg

A horse that "brushes" knocks the insides of her legs together when running. The problem can result in soreness, cuts, or bruises on the insides of the legs. If your horse does this, it's best to invest in some brushing boots. They will protect her legs.
4. A horse at my barn has trouble with dressage because he has a "ewe neck". What is his problem?

Answer: his neck is longer on the bottom than the top

A "ewe neck" is a conformational defect where the neck is longer on the bottom than the top. Typically, a horse with a ewe neck will have a neck that is slightly concave on top, and convex on the bottom. Most horses will have an inhibited ability to flex at the poll. The "ewe neck" is so named because it resembles a female sheep's neck.
5. What would I mean if I said a horse had a "roman nose"?

Answer: the horse's nose is convex

A horse said to have a "roman nose" means his face, when viewed from the side, has a convex profile.
6. My friends horse over-reaches. What does that mean?

Answer: the horse hits his hind toes against his front feet/lower legs

A horse that over-reaches can do serious damage to his tendons and heels, and can also pull off a front shoe. If a horse over-reaches, the best thing is to buy a set of "bell boots". These are meant especially for horses that over-reach. They either stretch them on over the hoof, or attach them with velcro.
7. A horse is said to have a "coffin head". What is a coffin head?

Answer: the horse has a large, heavy, usually unattractive head

A "coffin head" is a large, ugly, head.
8. What does it mean if a horse is "pigeon-toed"?

Answer: the horse's front legs are wide at the knees and the hooves turn inwards

A horse that is "pigeon-toed" usually has trouble with balance. The only cure is corrective surgery; this is both expensive for the owner, and uncomfortable and stressful for the horse.
9. My friend went to look at a horse, but he couldn't buy it because it had a "roach-back". What was the problem with the horse?

Answer: the horse has a round back

A "roach-back" is the opposite of a sway-back: the horse had a rounded (convex) back, caused by back problems. There is no cure.
10. What is "cow-hocked"?

Answer: the hocks are tipped inwards

A "cow-hocked" horse is a horse whose hocks tip inward towards each other. This conformation fault usually doesn't affect the horse's performance.
