Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a liquid medicine given orally called?

Answer: A drench

A drench is used for various medications especially when tablets need to be given. They are crushed and mixed with water and put into a large syringe. This is especially useful when horses will not eat their food when tablets are added.
2. A horse can vomit.

Answer: No

No they cannot. That is why a horse will end up with colic. They have the inability to regurgitate (throw up), so therefore the stomach cannot be emptied in order to make them feel better (indigestion). Instead they may roll due to the pain, which in turn can cause a twisted colon which may require surgery.
3. Where is a quarter crack?

Answer: In the half of the hoof nearest the heel

Good foot care is needed to prevent this from occurring. Picking out the hoof and if necessary putting on hoof dressing and thrush medication is a must for a sound (not lame) horse.
4. What are thumps?

Answer: Abdominal breathing

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, "Thumps" are referred to as abdominal breathing due to an ascaris infection causing pulmonary edema. The lungs cannot properly inflate due to the edema and they attempt to inspire more deeply by using their belly muscles, not just the diaphragm. Thumps are therefore "belly-breathing".
5. What kind of worms can lead to the death of a horse due to blood clots?

Answer: Strongyles

Another name for strongyles is bloodworms. Horses need to be on a regular worming program to prevent this and to maintain a healthy horse. Both tube worming by a vet and paste worming purchased from a feed store are used.
6. What color of horse is more likely to get a melanoma?

Answer: A pinto

Yes, pinto horses are more likely to develop melanomas which are usually benign. Melanomas are growths that can either be benign or malignant. This is due to the light-colored skin.
7. Moldy, dusty hay can cause difficulty in breathing. What is this condition called?

Answer: Heaves

Another name for this condition is pulmonary emphysema or broken wind. Strangles is another name for distemper. Azoturia is the name for Monday-morning sickness.
8. What is another name for lockjaw?

Answer: Tetanus

Mastitis is a bacterial infection of the mammary tissue of the udder.
Laminitis is another name for founder.
Rhinopneumonitis is a viral respiratory tract disease which can lead to spontaneous abortions in pregnant mares.
9. Feed a horse with scours a richer diet.

Answer: False

Scours means that they have a loose stool. If you would make the diet richer it would only add to the problem.
10. Which of these plants are not poisonous to horses: choke berry, poke berry, dandelions, bracken fern, horsetail, or lantana?

Answer: Dandelions

Yes, dandelions are the only one in the group mentioned that are non-poisonous. There are many others that are poisonous too, so be careful where you let your horses graze.
