Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You bring your horse in from the field or a ride and get ready to groom him. Which of these tasks must be done while grooming your horse?

Answer: Pick out his feet

Always pick out your horse's feet. There are a few reasons for this, but the main two are these; 1) There may be something trapped inside the hoof that is painful, or that requires veterinary attention. 2) If the horse has lost a shoe, you may need to call out the farrier as soon as possible.
2. Your horse stands constantly shifting his weight from one forefoot to the other and snaking his neck from side to side. What is this vice called?

Answer: Weaving

Weaving is a vice. Vices are usually caused by boredom and/or stress. Stable toys, mirrors, more turn-out, more roughage, and spending more time with your horse can all help, but vices can be very hard to completely cure once they have developed.
3. Which of these is the best thing to feed your horse as a treat?

Answer: An apple

Sugary treats are not very good for your horse. Some horses even suffer from sugar intolerance, which (among other things) can cause changes in behaviour, sensitive skin, and diarrhoea. If you want to treat your horse, give him a nice juicy apple.
4. Your horse has just had his dinner, which of these must you NOT do now?

Answer: Go for a ride

Horses should not be ridden for one hour after having a feed. Their system cannot deal with the demands of exercise and digestion and this can cause colic.
5. Your horse is sweating up a lot now that he has his winter coat. Time to clip. What type of clip leaves a patch of hair on the back, in the shape of a saddle?

Answer: Hunter

A trace clip takes the hair from the underside of the belly and neck, a blanket clip leaves the hair over the back and to about half-way down the belly in a kind of blanket shape, and a full clip removes all the hair, although some people leave the leg hair on.
6. You want to take your horse for a little stroll in-hand. Some of the route involves going on the road, what is the safest way to do this?

Answer: Put yourself between the cars and your horse

The safest way to lead a horse on the road is to have yourself between the horse and traffic. This makes it easier for you to give clear arm signals to traffic, and if your horse were to spook at something, you could pull his head towards you, which would swing his quarters away from the traffic, not out into it. If leading on the road, it is a very good idea to wear luminous clothing to make you easily visible to any traffic.
7. Which of these is a suitable bedding material for your horse?

Answer: All of these

There are many types of bedding available for your horse. The main things you need to consider when choosing bedding are:
Health of your horse, (eg; is the bedding non-toxic if eaten? is it too palatable so that the horse will eat it all? does your horse have an allergy to the bedding?) ease of management and workability, storage, disposal, cost.
8. A young female horse under the age of three or four is referred to as?

Answer: A Filly

A colt is an entire male horse under the age of four, a mare is a female horse over the age of four, and a gelding is a male horse that has been castrated.
9. Which of these should your horse be fed the most of?

Answer: Hay

Hay (or grass if your horse lives in a field) should always form the largest part of your horse's diet. It is a good source of fibre and helps to keep the digestive system running smoothly.
10. Ragwort is safe for horses to eat.

Answer: False

Ragwort should always be removed from fields and never be present in hay. It is poisonous to horses and can cause liver damage. It has a cumulative effect, so the damage caused builds up over time meaning that it is just as dangerous for your horse to eat small amounts of ragwort over a long period of time as it would be for it to eat a large quantity in one go.
